❝ OF SNOW & BLUE BOXESblissieThat dream drove Teagan to the brink of insanity. For lack of a better term, she thought about it obsessively. Her notebook was bursting with theories and hasty sketches of a shaggy-haired man surrounded by unanswered questions and pretend conversations. She never uttered a word about it to anyone besides her beloved cat, but even Ginny grew tired of it all, and would turn up her nose and stalk away when Teagan started her mumbling.
blissie“I’m off to take some pictures for my blog,” Teagan told the cat one afternoon as she slipped her phone into her sweatpants pocket. “It’s growing in popularity, you know. I hit the 200 followers mark a couple days ago, and it’s only been up for a couple weeks.” Ginny, however, expressed no interest in this as she curled her fluffy tail around her paws.
blissie“Ah, yes, a crazy lady and her cat,” said Teagan in a low voice, almost a mumble, as she shrugged on her coat and slipped the strap of her camera over her head. She flung open the door and was greeted with a flurry of snow that settled in her dark hair. Teagan let out a squeal of surprise and then one of delight. “Oh, this shoot will be lovely with all the snow that’s fallen.” She clasped her hands together before ducking under the doorway, slamming the door behind her. A sea of white stretched before her. The trees were layered with snow, their branches so heavy with the stuff that they only hovered a few inches from the ground. Hedges and bushes were coated with snow so that only little bits of green stuck out. Teagan frowned deeply, lines creasing around her mouth. I was hoping for some variety. Ah well; I guess I’ll only take a few pictures.
blissieFor several minutes, Teagan trudged through the ankle-deep snow. She experimented with her camera’s settings, scowling when the pictures she took turned up a blinding white color.
blissieShe was so wrapped up in this that she did not realize how far she had strayed until much later. Teagan sighed, pinching the bridge of her pink-tipped nose as she surveyed the area. A large bank of snow, at least three feet in height, lay several yards away, trampled down by footprints. Teagan narrowed her eyes, attempting to recall if they were hers. There hadn’t been anyone else come through here recently, so they must have been. She treaded through the snow bank, so focused on not getting the freezing, flaky snow inside of her boots that she didn’t see the object standing immediately in front of her until it was too late. Teagan full-on plowed into it, the corner of the object colliding with her forehead.
blissie“Oi! Watch where you’re going!” Teagan exclaimed angrily, rubbing her sore forehead. However, when she saw what, exactly, she had rammed into, she laughed at her own stupidity. “I’m talking to a … what are you, anyways? A box?” Teagan planted her hands on her hips, her gaze drifting upward to the words written at the top of the box. “A police telephone box. Hmm.” Her brow furrowed in confusion. She noted that the box was not covered in layers of snow; only a thin sheet dusted the slanted roof—a sign that it had not been here long. That’s strange, Teagan thought silently. She cocked her head, puzzled at the odd sight. What’s a 1960’s police box doing out here? Better yet, what’s it doing in this time period? She pondered this for a few moments before her mind sprouted an idea. She gently lifted her camera out from its case, flicked it on, and snapped a picture of the box. The results were amazing. The vibrant blue of the box didn’t clash with the color of the snow, and it looked so … so, vintage.
blissieThough, after only she had been able to snap a couple pictures, her camera screen flickered on and off and then died completely. Teagan muttered under her breath and kicked at the nearest lump of snow, scattering it every which way. She sighed, cursing herself for not checking the charge level before she left, and stuffed the camera back into its case before treading home.
blissieLater that evening when Teagan was laying—well, halfway laying—on her couch. Only her legs rested on the cushions of the couch. The rest of her body lay horizontally on the floor. Ginny had plopped down on Teagan’s feet and tickled her calves with her fluffy tail. Teagan was flipping through the few photos that she had managed to snag before her camera died when she noticed something. In the very corner of the photo, tucked under a mound of snow, lay something reflective and … almost shiny. When she narrowed her eyes, she could almost make out what it was. A piece of metal, possibly. Abruptly, she jumped up from the couch, launching a squealing Ginny onto the floor. Teagan grabbed her coat, pulling it on as she switched on a flashlight and left.
blissieIt was not dark out yet. The vivid orange and red sun was just beginning to melt away behind the rolling, snowy hills. The light had dimmed considerably so that Teagan almost had to squint to see properly, and it must have dropped eight or nine degrees since she had been out here last, several hours ago. Teagan huffed, a puff of air curling from her lips. She pulled her scarf up, past her mouth and up to her freezing nose as she trekked through the snow, attempting to find her way back to the box. It was a long walk filled with twists and turns and when she finally was able to make out the shape of the box, the tips of her fingers, her cheeks, and her toes were numb. Reaching out with gloved hands, Teagan scattered the snow around the box, frantically searching for the object. It took a minute, but eventually her fingers closed around a small, shiny thing. Teagan lifted it so that it was at her eye-level. After a brief moment of examining, she was able to confirm what it was.
blissieIn the palm of her hand, she held a key.
