Bright sunlight streamed through the window, bathing the bedroom in dazzling light. Cole groaned and sat up, shielding his eyes against the glare. Deciding it was still too early, he flopped back onto the bed.
"Get up, lazy butt," commanded Oriom, walking into his room, dressed in her armour. Cole grabbed a pillow and put it over his head, pushing his face into the bed.
"Orion, it's still dark out. It's too early." Orion raised an eyebrow.
"It's not dark, dummy. It's 6:00 am, way later than you should've slept." He didn't respond, just sighed pointedly.
"Let me sleep one more hour. Then I'll get up." Orion shook her head, strands of black and red hair swaying.
"We aren't paying you to lay in bed." Cole raised his head, pulling off the pillow.
"You're paying me?" He asked blearily, brightening slightly. Orion smirked.
"Nope." With that she reached out and grabbed his hand, pulling him off the bed.
"You suck. You're an evil tyrant." Grumbled Cole, stretching.
"I know," replied Orion, still grinning. She turned and walked out, followed by Cole, grumbling about how he should blast her face off with fire.
At the outdoor training arena, Shae was waiting for them, along with Alex, Shane, and Mia, who was in her griffin form.
"All right, team, today it's teamwork training." Called Shae loudly. A slight breeze ruffled across the island, bringing the smell of the salty ocean. Despite the fact that it was too early to be up, Cole felt energized.
"Also, you can't be a team unless you trust each other. Mia is going to carry each of you high into the sky, then drop you. In midair, she'll pretend to be injured somehow, and you have to help her, no matter how fast you're falling. Mia will catch you once you've completed. Now you all know you have wings in your armour, and most of you probably know how to use them. However, you're not permitted to open them up for this training, you're supposed to rely on Mia." Cole felt his stomach flip flop. Trust was always a hard spot for him.
Shane called the rights to go first, racing over to Mia and climbing onto her back. She dug her talons into the ground and jumped into the air, flapping her feathered wings. Shane whooped and raised his hands in the air. Soon they were too high up to see, but Shae was still watching them with a pair of binoculars. A few moments later, the two landed safely in the ground. One of Mia's legs was bandaged, ointment oozing from underneath it.
"Good job, you two. Orion, your turn." Orion nodded and clambered up onto Mia's back, hair blowing around her face. Soon, she was plummeting back to the ground, but the griffin who was supposed to be carrying her was diving beside her, appearing concerned. Only a few moments before hitting the ground, Orion did a graceful flip, landing on Mia's back, as she'd rushed forwards to catch her. Shae sighed.
"Orion, you completed your mission, but you can't be a daredevil like that. One day you could die by doing something so risky." She rolled her eyes pointedly. Cole was next. Heart beating fast, he clamped his legs around Mia's torso, who immediately shot into the air. He hung on for dear life as the ground got smaller and smaller, then Mia shook herself hard, sending him flying. Stomach roiling, he grabbed for the griffin, but she shied away.
"Cole, that's not what you're supposed to do!" It triggered, and he pulled out the bandage and ointment he'd been given. Within seconds, Mia's 'injury' was fixed. The two were still falling, cool air rushing past Cole's face, lifting his hair. Mia tucked her wings in and streaked forwards, diving underneath Cole to catch him. He only dared to breathe again after his feet were safely on the solid ground.
