I hate Mondays. I know it’s been said a thousand times over, but it’s true. Mondays suck.

These thoughts laced though my mind as I burst into my workplace, a quaint little coffee cabin in the outskirts of town, dubbed ‘The Java House’. It was one of my favorite places to be, with a peaceful, friendly aura floating about it. Still, being there six hours a day, four days a week really starts to grate.

“You’re late, Cal,” my best friend, Darcy chided, her leafy green eyes flitting up to meet my muddy brown ones. Today she was clad in a soft blue skirt with a ruffled, lace trim and a long-sleeved navy colored shirt with the rumpled sleeves pushed all the way up to her elbows.

“No kidding, Sherlock Holmes.” I grinned, maneuvering over to where she stood behind the mocha-colored counter.

“And you forgot your name tag,” she pointed out with a quick glance to my ruffled shirt. She shoved a Styrofoam coffee cup with the initials ‘JH’ for Java House carved neatly on the side under a Keurig. A thick line of black liquid bubbled into the flimsy cup. Steam curled from the cup, creating a maze of misty designs above it.

On a usual day, I would have been upset at myself for being so forgetful, but at the moment, I couldn’t care less. So I shrugged, letting my purse slip off of my shoulder and onto the tile flooring, nudging it under the gap between the floor and the counter with the side of my foot.

“One of these days you’re gonna get fired. You really need to get here earlier from now on,” Darcy nagged, looking at me pointedly.

“Thanks, Mom,” I replied, nudging her with my hip.

“Just trying to help,” she hummed casually. “Give this to that person over at that booth, will you?” She shoved the cup into my hands, pointing in the general direction of the person. As I pinpointed her location, I gasped, my hand fluttering up to meet my mouth.

“Cassia.”

Whoops.

Darcy jerked her head up, drilling me with a quizzical stare. “What did you say? Do you know her?”

“No,” I snapped—too quickly. “No, I don’t.” I lied. Why did I lie? What was so horrible about Cassia that I felt the need to deny ever meeting her?

Darcy’s eyebrows shot to the top of her forehead. She snapped her head around to look at me. “Well,” she mused, drawing the word out. “It wouldn’t surprise me if you two hung out, what with the medieval meets sci-fi thing she has going on with her outfit and hair,” she laughed, dramatically gesturing to Cassia.

I hadn’t been bothered to notice these things when I bumped into her all those years ago, but now that I could get a good look, she did stand out. I leaned forward, setting my elbow on the stained counter and nestled my chin in the palm of my hand to get a better look. A black jumper hugged her body, which curved like it was supposed to. A blood-red mantle with a gold clasp draped across her shoulders and barely brushed the wood flooring. Her eyes were a bright lilac, and her black hair hung on her shoulders and down her back. Side-swept bangs were held back with a silver pin.

“You’re right,” I mumbled. I straightened, scooped up the steaming cup, and marched over to the table, setting it down on the table harder than I intended to. Cassia jumped and cursed under her breath as coffee spilled over the edge of the flimsy Styrofoam sides and onto her lap.

“What are you doing here?” I demanded loudly, crossing my arms over one another.

“Shut up,” Cassia hissed, frantically attempting to wipe the sticky, brown liquid from her clothes.

“Relax, the coffee is dark and so is your … attire,” I said hesitantly, gesturing to her jumper. To myself, I whispered, “if you can call it that.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Well,” I began, pressing my lips together. “It’s not exactly … modern. Anyways, stop trying to change the subject. Why are you here?”

“I’m getting coffee,” she replied snarkily.

“Please,” I said, placing my hands on my hips. “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I bumped into you six years ago, only two nights after my mother’s death, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I just happened to see you here, with no occurrences in between.”

Defeated, Cassia slammed her menu down on the table. “Come closer,” she instructed, curling her finger, beckoning me towards her.

I gave her a funny look. Not ha-ha funny, but the kind of look that screamed, ‘how freaking stupid can you get?’ “I’m not going to kiss you, if that’s what you want.”

Cassia snorted, a smile tugging at the edges of her lips. “Calista, listen,” she instructed solemnly. All amusement drained from her face. “It’s time. Tonight.”

“What?”

“The note I gave you—the second one, not the first—do you have it?”

“Yeah, ‘course I have it.”

“Follow its instructions,” she explained, tapping her fingers on the table’s glossy, translucent covering rhythmically.

I sighed, shifting slightly. “How? It’s all gobbily-gook. I’ve tried everything to de-code it.”

A grin crept its way up to Cassia’s mouth, stretching the skin around her lips. “You’ll see, Calista.” She paused for a moment, her light eyes flitting over my dark ones. “You’ll see.”
