Chapter Eight
*Ping*
Clara groaned, who could be messaging her on her cell this early in the morning?
Hello (:
Who? What? Where? When? Why?
There were five minutes left before her alarm would go off, even though it wasn't a school day.
Who is this?
Whoever it was better have a good explanation of why they woke her up so early.
It's Petey. (:
Petey? What's the matter with you?!
How did you get this number?
Dang it, she should have pretended it wasn't her.
Your file has all of your contact information in it.
Oh, right. Clara was suddenly embarrassed again at how miniscule her file was.
Is that how you knew how to get to my house too?
No, we actually live on the same street, so I already knew you lived there.
They lived on the same street? Wait, he knew Clara lived there already? Weird.
Oh.
Clara wasn't sure how to respond.
What are you doing? (:
Still trying to wake up.
I'm so sorry! Did I wake you? ):
Yeah, but it's okay.
What? It's okay? If Irene had messaged her awake, Clara would have made sure she regret it. Of course, Irene would have told Clara to suck it up.
Let me make it up to you. (:
Okay?
Would you like to go to the museum? (:
Ugh, the museum? Is there a more boring place?
Sure.
Clara, of course, didn't want to go. But she knew she should explore his interests.
I can be at your house in two minutes. (:
Uh no. I need a shower. Big time. Give me an hour.
Oh, sorry. Sure, I'll be there in an hour.
Clara thought about asking if she could just meet him at his house after she was ready, but she didn't think she could handle it.
After showering, dressing, eating breakfast, and informing her mother of her plans for the day, Clara stood outside and found that Petey was walking out of a door about five houses down and across the street. Who knew they lived so close? Apparently Petey did.
Clara met Petey halfway and greeted him. This time, Clara didn't look fancy, her hair was still wet but already forming loose curls. Her clothes were well worn and she didn't wear makeup.
"Your eye's are brighter in the sunlight," Petey said as his ears turned red.
"Uh, thanks," Clara said without much sincerity. It's not that she disliked the compliment, she just didn't like how he was trying so hard.
They walked side by side in the direction of the museum. Actually, Clara was a half a step ahead of Petey. How odd, Clara found, that he doesn't try leading like most guys do. Clara enjoyed being in charge, but when it came to a relationship, shouldn't the boy take the lead? Clara supposed it was Petey who asked her out rather than the opposite, but Clara wished he would try guiding her with confidence. Petey still hunched his shoulders, but Clara found that it motivated her not to hunch hers.
The "couple" entered the museum where Clara saw what bored her so much. It was a couple of documents, a lot of written history, and very few items. For once, Petey was the one who led her. He walked to the first written paragraph on the wall. Clara tried reading the piece, but kept losing her focus, she instead examined a piece of dirt on her shoes. She didn't even notice that Petey was walking away until he was almost to the end of the large room. She ran to catch up with him, "Where are you going?"
"To the next section."
"The next section?"
Petey motioned to a door that Clara had never noticed before.
"Did you think the museum was just these documents?" He asked with an amused smile.
"No," Clara said defensively, "Well... Yes."
He laughed and opened the door for her. What she saw inside the room she had just walked into took her breath away.
Such color.
Such vibrant color.
Paintings and sculptures occupied the entire space.
"Wow," Clara breathed. She didn't notice Petey looking at her with a smile on his face.
"Isn't it beautiful?"
Clara nodded, her mouth was hanging open.
Who knew?
Who knew such things could exist?
