Part Two-Roommates-ThanyelPart Two, Thanyel
Thanyel took one glance at the three crests before her and swiftly picked up the heron, letting it dangle from her hand. “The heron. A fitting choice for you.” Lady Delilah smiled at her apprentice. “Put it on, and we’ll go meet your new roommates. You’ll be sharing a room with one new girl from each Guild.” Thanyel slipped the chain over her head and followed her mentor out of the building. They walked quickly to a long, low dorm with a heron crest carved over the doorframe. Heron House lodgings. Thanyel was glad to step out of the summer heat into the coolness of the well-lit dorm. She dropped a curtsy to Heather, Mistress of Heron House. The plump woman gave her an approving glance before turning back to Lady Delilah. “I’ll send her over to your office at the seventh hour each morning, as usual.” Lady Delilah nodded and turned to leave.
“Come, child. It’s time for you to meet your fellow first years.” Heather led her down a long, bright hallway whose walls were decorated with herons. Herons in flight, herons standing on one leg in the grass, herons fishing, herons doing everything. Somehow, Thanyel wasn’t surprised. It was Heron House, after all. She followed Heather into a spacious room equipped with two bunk beds and four desks. Crisp white sheets and bright red blankets covered the beds, and a plush scarlet rug padded the floor. Bright red curtains stirred in the breeze blowing through the large window over the desks, and a bookshelf stood in the corner. The four girls were obviously meant to have one shelf each, but Thanyel noticed another four-shelved bookshelf beside it with two shelves labeled ‘Mage’ and two shelves labeled ‘Healer’. Mages and Healers would need more space for books on their crafts than Knights and Shadows.
“Thanyel, this is Celia Lenwine, of the Mage’s Guild, Andrea Nihereter, of the Shadow Brotherhood, and Esther Eallenles, of the Knight’s Guild. Girls, this is Thanyel Smith.” Thanyel flashed a broad, friendly smile at the other girls, who returned it in kind. Heather left them to go bake some cookies (Thanyel was told soon after the plump woman left that she was the best cook in the city). Thanyel quickly learned that Andrea, Celia, and Esther all liked horses, books, and roaming in the woods (Andrea especially).
