Chapter 4: Here we go again

Postby CuddlesBabyCakes » Sat May 11, 2013 4:38 am

Bearspirit and Flufffur padded side by side. They had grown now and were now proud adult cats. Bearspirit grew to have the lean muscular body of their father as Flufffur had the same build as their mother.
"Ugh, why can't we find anywhere that isn't occupied?" Flufffur complained out loud. Her paws were killing her and she felt like she was about to drop from exhaustion.
"Awe come on Flufffur, we've only been traveling for an hour at the most," Bearspirit said, she had already gotten sick and tired of hearing her sister whine and complain all because they were pushed out of their last place which they thought was unoccupied but had to fight some really angry badgers and were driven away with only a few minor scratches for being so lucky and good at dodging.
"So? It feels like we've been going on for days!" Flufffur moaned.
"Fine, we'll take a break and try to hunt before we continue on ok?" Bearspirit asked. That seemed to have lifted Flufffur's mood because she soon darted off into the bushes.
"Ugh, sisters!" Bearspirit said to herself before she too went out to hunt.

Bearspirit quietly stalked a squirrel, she was using the bushes and the dead leaves to better hide herself from the squirrel’s sight and she made sure she was downwind so it couldn't smell her. Quietly creeping up behind the squirrel, she leaped and bit down on the back of its neck quickly killing it without a sound. Burying her catch, she went off to hunt again, this place was rich in prey and it didn't take her long to catch a thrush, a chaffinch, two rabbits and another squirrel. Smiling down at her hard day's work, she gathered up her catch and dragged it back to where she and her sister first departed to hunt, dropping her prey down she waited for Flufffur to return with her catch as well. After what seemed like an hour, Flufffur came back with just a little mouse to show how well she hunted.
"What happened?" Bearspirit asked.
"A fox chased away all the prey where I was, its stench was all over the place! I was lucky to find this guy before getting out of there!" Flufffur said. Bearspirit could smell the fox on her fur, it smelled female and had a hint of milk mixed in.
"Well we won't see the last of it I'm sure, I smell milk on that fox's scent, she probably has a den somewhere nearby and she will be on the hunt again soon."
"Are you serious?!" Flufffur asked her sister.
"Go ahead and smell it for yourself, it’s all over your fur, you smell like that she-fox." Flufffur sniffed her fur and her nose wrinkled up at the scent.
"You're right, there is a milky scent mixed in but now I have to wash my fur if I smell like a fox!" Bearspirit let out a meow of laughter as she watched her sister make faces as she cleaned her fur.
"Can we eat now?" Flufffur asked, now finished with cleaning off the fox scent.
"Take first pick, I found plenty here." The sisters dug into their meal as the full moon began to rise.

Darkpelt padded with his clan mates that were chosen to go to the gathering. This was his apprentice’s first gathering and she was being well behaved so far. Looking up at the moon as he waited for the rest of his clan mates to catch up, he thought he saw a hint of a shape in the stars in the shape of a cat's head. That's strange, it looked like a kits.
"Darkpelt?" Mousepaw called her mentors name. "What are you looking at?" she asked, trying to see what he was looking at in the sky before she finally spotted it.
"Is that a kits head in the stars?" Mousepaw asked her mentor.
"I do believe it is, but what could it possibly mean?"
"Maybe, it’s a Starclan kit?" Mousepaw suggested.
"No, the head looks to faint to be a Starclan kit, Starclan cats tend to show up much brighter, I think it might be a loner kit or some kitty pet."
"But I thought kitty pets don't go up to Starclan?" Mousepaw said.
"All cats go to either Starclan or The Dark Hole."
"What's the Dark Hole?" Mousepaw asked.
"It's a place where cats that kill to gain something go. Or cats who betray their clans and disobey the warrior code and our ancestors."
"Like loners and kitty pets? They don't believe in the warrior code."
"I do not believe kitty pets go there, they probably go somewhere else that we do not know about that only takes in kitty pets."
"Oh, so either way all cats that pass go somewhere?" Mousepaw asked.
"Yes, just like all animals of the Forest. Everything is connected and has a delicate balance to keep in order. Upset that balance and what happens?"
"Everyone suffers?" Mousepaw asked.
"Exactly," Darkpelt said with an amused purr. Mousepaw smiled and purred back, the tip of her tail curling at his praise.
"Come on Darkpelt, Mousefur. It's time to head into the clearing," Stonestar called to them before passing over the rocky bridge that separated their territory from the others and the gathering. Darkpelt and his apprentice ran to keep up with the others.
*******************

Smokeswallow yawned, he knew tonight was the gathering and that it would be the medicine cats this time that will probably have to address all the clans of what they had heard in their dreams from Starclan. Quickly grooming his fur so it looked sleek and glossy he called to his apprentice before they went to go join their clan mates. Once the small group left the camp, they padded through thick underbrush from the trees until they reached a log that fell over the raging river, the wood was coated in moss and was slick with water.
"Everyone be careful!" Miststar warned her clan mates before leaping up onto the log and making sure she checked every paw step for safe grip holds before signaling for her clan mates to follow behind her.
"Do we have to cross that?" Skypaw asked his mentor looking at the log skeptically. "It doesn't look safe at all to me."
"It's all right Skypaw, just stick close to me and if you fall I will catch you. Just dig your claws into the wood and make your way across slowly, don't worry, the clan will wait for us," Smokeswallow said, trying to reassure his frightened apprentice.
"Ok, if you say so," Skypaw said in a tone that told Smokeswallow he didn't believe a word he was saying about the log being safe enough to cross. Smokeswallow allowed his apprentice to go first so he could best catch him should he slip on the log and start to fall to the raging water below.
"I have never seen the river this angry before," Skypaw said as he looked down at the water from the corner of his eye.
"It's from all the rain we got. The water is trying to drain itself some so the land doesn't flood much. It's very unique how the water knows when to move and when to sit still."
"I thought it was just Starclan telling us that something bad will happen," Skypaw said as he continued on.
"What do you mean by that?" Smokeswallow asked the young apprentice.
"Well, I had a dream last night. I was hunting, and I wondered too close to the river and the water was over flowing its banks. I tried to get away but the ground sucked in my paws and trapped me there, I think Starclan warned me that a flood was going to happen."
"Why have you not told me of this before?!" Smokeswallow hissed in his apprentice's ear.
"I didn't think it was an actual omen, I thought it was just a nightmare because there was no Starclan cat there," Skypaw said in his defense.
"Any dream like that is an omen from Starclan and is very important. Hidden information as that could put the clan in jeopardy!" Smokeswallow hissed and cuffed Skypaw's ear with sheathed claws.
"I'm sorry! Geeze no need to bite my head off! Apprentices make mistakes you know!"
"Medicine cats can't afford to make mistakes! Lives rest within our paws!" Smokeswallow said back to him. Sighing, he took a few deep breaths before he continued.
"Look, now you know not to keep a dream like that hidden again. We have to let all the clans know, the river runs through all of our territories and will pose a threat to the others as well." With that said they ran after their clan mates.

********************

Firebreeze waited at the entrance for her clan mates. With no apprentice to help if there should be an attack, Firebreeze had to teach one of her closest friends how to define an herb and how to apply it well.
"Are you ready Firebreeze?" Smokestar asked.
"Ya, is the others ready?" Firebreeze asked her mother.
"Ya we're ready!" Follow paw said happily. This was his second gathering so far since becoming a warrior apprentice. The little tabby tom was shaking with eagerness to get moving. How I wish I could have an apprentice as excited like that for a gathering. Heck I would do anything for an apprentice at all! Firebreeze thought to herself as she watched Followpaw and his mentor join the others and head out before following close behind. Firebreeze kept her eyes open for some herbs, it was always good to know where they are so she can gather them on the way back and replenishes her stock. Leaf-bare had nearly whipped her out completely with so many sick cats that came to her.
Firebreeze followed her clan mates silently until they arrived at the gathering, splitting from her clan, she went over to the group of medicine cats under the thick tree that hung over two bushes creating a sort of den like place that the medicine cats go to discuss topics like the elders in their clans.
"Hello guys!" Firebreeze said cheerfully as she greeted her friends and their apprentices.
"Hello Firebreeze!" Smokeswallow said back with the same enthusiasm. Darkpelt smiled at her and moved over to make a spot for her next to Mousepaw.
"So, what’s the news so far this month?" Firebreeze asked.
"Skypaw here had a dream of a flood," Smokeswallow said, making eye contact with the other two medicine cats.
"A flood? Already?" Darkpelt asked worried. "I haven’t even been able to check on the fresh supply of new shoots we are getting, they are right by the water."
"Don't worry Darkpelt," Mousepaw said. "I took care of that already, I gathered up all that was fully grown and there is a nice stacked pile waiting inside your den for you."
Darkpelt purred and brushed his apprentice's head with the tip of his tail.
"That is still worrying news," Firebreeze said. "Fireblazeclan has hardly any cats in it."
"Is everything ok?" Smokeswallow asked her, worry in his green eyes.
"Yes, it was just a hard leaf-bare. Many cats died due to it no matter how hard I tried."
"We are sorry to hear of that," Mousepaw said in sympathy.
*********************

"Time for the meeting!" Miststar called out to the gathered clans. Everyone turned their head to the big tree branch the leaders used to perch on.
"Stonestar, would you care to go first?" Miststar asked the tom.
"Thank you Miststar, but I think our medicine cats should have the run of this don't you guys agree?" Stonestar asked them.
"Because of what they have heard?" Smokestar asked while the clans waited patiently for their leaders to make their decision.
"I think it's a good idea, it'll also be a first for our clans for the medicine cats to speak up for us. I'm in for letting them at it."
"Then it's settled, are we all in?" Miststar asked the other two leaders who nodded their heads.
"Darkpelt! Smokeswallow! Firebreeze! Come up here please!" Miststar called to the group of medicine cats. The three cats and their apprentices did as they were told and leaped up to sit beside the leaders.
"Go ahead," Stonestar said as everyone listened in.
"I'll go first," Firebreeze said and she wasn't met with any complaints.
"As many of you I am sure of has known, Starclan has visited us in our dreams and have given us a prophecy!" The clans began to murmur amongst themselves at what Firebreeze said.
"I know we have not heard from Starclan for many moons, but now they have word of a cat that will help us defeat the bears and save the forest and our homes!" Darkpelt added in.
"The cat is not of our home and is a loner," Smokeswallow added in as well.

The clans busted in outrage and protests.
"How can a loner save us?" Flowerpetle asked.
"YA! A loner can't do anything! We are best on our own!" Orangefur said.
"Patience!" Firebreeze shouted over all the mews. When the noise died down, Smokeswallow began.
"I know it is hard to believe, it is for us as well but Starclan has come to us and told us that a dark tabby she-cat that was born a loner will have the power to save us all. They say she will be the one to lead us into battle and we will prevail and win!"
"But we must teach her the ways of Starclan if we are to have any success in the fight or gaining her trust," Darkpelt said.
"We must earn the she-cats trust and win her over on our side for without her we are as good as dead if we take on the bears by ourselves!" Firebreeze said.
"And what is this she-cats name and we do we find her exactly?" Heartbreeze hissed. Murmurs of agreement followed him.
"She lies deep within the Forest. In lands many of us have yet to travel to and explore. She will be a hard one to find, but it is said she will be waiting for us there. She may not know it, but she has been chosen by our ancestors and it would be wise to obey them and not make them angry," Smokeswallow said. The clans we silent as they watched them.
"My apprentice also has received a warning from Starclan that many of you should hear! Skypaw! Please come up here!" Smokeswallow called to his apprentice. Skypaw sighed and leaped up to the tree branch.
"Tell the clans what you have told me," Smokeswallow encouraged.
"I had a dream that there was going to be a flood. The river over swelled its banks and the ground became wet and sucked in any cat that wondered onto it. I do not know when this dream is supposed to happen, but the ground felt like it was sucking you in like quicksand until the point where you disappear completely," Skypaw said and lowered his head. The clans broke out in worried whispers, warriors were now on edge, their fur standing on end. The leaders starred in horror at what Skypaw had to say.
"Then we must be careful and keep an eye on the banks of the river," Stonestar said.
"No cat is to wonder near the river if the ground looks muddy and wet!" Smokestar shouted.
"Anyone found near the water’s edge without a warrior or a partner with them will be punished!" Miststar joined in.
"Kits should remain in camp at all times and apprentices should be on the lookout. Obey what your mentors have to tell you and do not wonder out alone! We must keep the remaining cats we have safe if we are to find this prophesized she-cat and defeat the bears!" Stonestar continued.
"Meeting dismissed!" Miststar said and everyone departed to join their own clan mates. Friends said their goodbyes, the medicine cats quickly exchanged some advice on where to find the most herbs for what was to come and the leaders were busy rounding up stragglers. When everyone was in their designated clan groups, they all departed and went their separate ways.
***********************

Bearspirit and Flufffur laid down on a rock near the river in their new home. They were amazed that they managed to find such a place that was rich in prey, sleeping places and water and were not claimed by anyone else. The two sister’s fur was slightly blowing in the gentle breeze when something woke them up.
"What is happening?" Flufffur asked her sister as she frantically looked around.
"It sounds like the river," Bearspirit said as both sisters turned their head over to the river only a few fox lengths away.
"It's overflowing its banks!" Flufffur shouted and leaped up on her paws. Bearspirit followed and headed for a tree.
"Quick! Get in a tree!" Bearspirit shouted back to her sister. Flufffur ran to the nearest tree she could and quickly climbed up. Looking around she found that she was far from her sisters tree and the limbs that were closest to her were weak looking and thin.
"Flufffur!" Bearspirit called to her sister as the water rushed around the base of their trees.
"I'm all right Bearspirit! I'm over here!" Flufffur called out to her. Flufffur watched as Bearspirit looked for her in her tree until she spotted her sister and relief flooded her eyes.
"What are we going to do now?" Bearspirit called to her.
"I don't know. How long do you think it will last?" Flufffur asked back.
"Your guess is as good as mine!" Bearspirit said. The water had risen in the last few minutes and both she-cats looked on worriedly from their tree branches.
"I hope it doesn't rise to high. I can't climb any higher without the branches giving under my weight," Flufffur said.
"Same here," Bearspirit agreed. The she-cats lay down on their branches and prepared for a long night in the trees as the water below them rushed through the Forest.

In the middle of the night, both she-cats woke up to the wind howling through the trees. The strong gusts rocked the branches back and forth and many creaked and groaned, the ones that were not strong enough broke and fell to the rushing water below and were swiped away by the strong current. Bearspirit looked over to her sister who was clinging to her branch tightly as it shook from side to side.
"Flufffur! Hang on!" Bearspirit called to her sister, worried that she would fall to a watery grave below.
"I'm trying to!" Flufffur shouted back but the wind blew harder, and Bearspirit heard the branch begin to snap. Locking eyes with her sister, Bearspirit was powerless as she watched the branch snap off completely and plummet to the water with her sister still on it, unable to release her claws from the wood in time before both branch and cat smashed into the water.
"FLUFFFUR!!! NO!!" Bearspirit shouted to her sister as she wailed and tried to swim in the water but the current was too strong. Without thinking, Bearspirit leaped from the tree and went into the water, she was intent on trying to save her sister, she was all that she had and she couldn't lose her, she couldn't lose another sibling. Bearspirit could see her sister’s wet grey head bob up and down as the waves pulled her under and pushed her up, she was getting tired and Bearspirit was feeling the effects from the cold water. Her legs were screaming at her to rest and just give up but she did not listen to them, she was focused on her sister who limply clung to a thin branch in the water. When Bearspirit reached her, she could tell her sister was barely breathing, let alone awake.
"Flufffur! Hang on!" Bearspirit said as she grabbed her sister’s scruff and using the log she grabbed on she paddled with her back legs to a huge rock where she dragged her sister up onto. flopping down beside her sister, she pawed Flufffur in the side until finally the she-cat began to hack up the water and breath somewhat more than what she was before.
"Oh Flufffur! You're all right!" Bearspirit said happily before sleep pulled her under.

Chapter 5: Bearspirit is now on her own

Postby CuddlesBabyCakes » Tue May 14, 2013 10:46 am

In the morning, Bearspirit woke up to a soggy ground. Looking over at her sister, she saw the faint rise and fall of her sisters breathing, her fur was matted with blood and despite the taste, Bearspirit began to groom her sister’s fur until her silver color showed once more, looking like it had before their little watery swim.
"Flufffur? Can you hear me?" Bearspirit whispered in her sister’s ear. It took a while but Flufffur finally opened her eyes, the blue eyes that their mother had and her sister had inherited were cloudy and dazed looking.
"Bearspirit?" Flufffur said weakly.
"I'm here, I'm here Flufffur," Bearspirit said happily. She was glad her sister hadn't died in the night, she didn't know what she would have done if she had woken up to a still Flufffur.
"I'm sorry Bearspirit," Flufffur said. Her voice sounded bubbly, as if she still had water in her lungs which she could very well still have, she did swallow a good deal of it when she fell into the water.
"Sorry for what Flufffur? There is nothing to be sorry for."
"I'm sorry I can't stay with you," Flufffur managed to squeak out. A sudden fear crept into Bearspirit's heart.
"Don't say that Flufffur! You're going to be all right!" Bearspirit’s voice cracked with tears.
"No. I can already feel it coming for me, Darkheart is even here Bearspirit, and you should see him. He looks so handsome and full grown."
"Flufffur, don't leave me," Bearspirit whined. She couldn't lose her sister, not after everything they had been through, after she had risked everything to save her and for what? To lose her sister? To be left alone?
"I won't allow you to die! I need you!" Bearspirit screamed.
"I'm sorry little sister. But it’s time for us to go our separate ways. I love you Bearspirit, be strong for the three of us. Remember, mother is still out there, you're not alone."
"No, Flufffur please don't." Bearspirit laid her head down next to her sister and touched noses with her. Felling a gentle rap of a tongue, she watched as her sister finally let go and slipped away right in front of her.
"Flufffur? Flufffur!" Bearspirit called to her sister but the limp she-cat did not answer her, she didn't even flick the tip of her ear like she always did when Bearspirit said her name to show she had heard her. Tears streamed down her cheeks, her sister, like her brother, was dead.

Throwing back her head, Bearspirit let out an ear piercing wail.
"FLUFFFUR! NO!" Looking down at her sisters body, Bearspirit closed Flufffur’s eyes, she couldn't bear to look at them, she couldn't bear to look at the she-cat she had shared so many adventures with, had fought with but they would make back up and become friends once more. The cat who hunted with her, fought with her, kept her warm, comforted her when she had nightmares. The cat who was the strong one when she needed a shoulder to lean on, the one who looked out for her when mother was taken away from them when they were only kits. Taking Flufffur by the scruff, she gently dragged her sisters body to the wet ground below, it didn't take her long to dig a deep enough hole for her sisters body, but it was hard for her to lower her sister down into the grave. Slowly burying the hole back up, she had hoped that her sister was just playing around with her and the moment the mud hit her she would wake up and start shooting angry words at her but the body remained still, her sister was not coming back to her, she would never curl up beside her or hunt with her again, she was now on her own. Once fully buried, Bearspirit couldn't bear to stay by the grave and she headed off, how could she stay in a place that would remind her of how her sister died? How could she stay in a place where her sister was buried under piles and piles of mud that would turn into hard dirt the moment the sun came out and evaporated the water trapped within the ground? She couldn't bear to dwell on those sad memories, she needed to remember the good ones and with those flooding her mind, she left their home for the last time and never returned.

Chapter 6: A mate and some new friends

Postby CuddlesBabyCakes » Fri May 17, 2013 4:34 am

The clans were beginning to climb down the trees that they had taken to when the water had flooded its banks. Many cats who did not managed to get into the tree before the water came were washed away to nearby trees and rocks that they had managed to climb onto in time before they really did disappear. The leaders who were making sure all cats were accompanied checked to make sure that all kits and apprentices were accounted for. The medicine cats ran from cat to cat with whatever herbs they had managed to save and tended to the half-drowned and wet cats. Now began the hard part, cleaning up their camps and trying to get back to life as their paws made sucking sounds in the mud and muck that was now the ground.
*****************

Bearspirit padded slowly under the wet and muddy bushes and trees, she didn't care that her paws were becoming a muddy mess or weighing her down as she walked. She was lost in her thoughts and in her memories. Without knowing it she soon felt her face bump into another form of wet fur. Shaking her head, she looked up to see a handsome tom before here. He had sleek silver-blue fur, and wonderful green eyes. Bearspirit found herself speechless as she just stared at the tom who smiled at her, he was slightly taller than her, so she had to incline her head a little to see him better.
"Careful there, you should watch where you are going next time. A cat lost in her thoughts tends to get into trouble."
"I...I'm sorry," Bearspirit stammered. She could feel her skin heat up under her fur as embarrassment washed over her at her clumsiness and her lack of remembering to keep observant of her surroundings.
"No problem, there was no harm done. Hey, you're not from around here are you? What are you doing in this part of the woods?" The tom asked.
"I...I was just walking, I didn't mean to intrude on your territory," Bearspirit said lowering her head.
"It's no problem at all. My name is Riptide, what's yours?" Bearspirit lifted her head, shocked at how friendly this tom was to a strange cat on his turf.
"Bearspirit, my name is Bearspirit." Riptide purred and the tip of his tail curved up.
"So where are you heading to Bearspirit?" he asked her.
"Nowhere really. I was just looking for somewhere to rest for a while than I was going to keep on heading North until I guess I find somewhere that seems all right to stay in." Bearspirit wondered why she was telling this handsome tom these things, it wasn't like he cared, he probably just wanted to know how long she was going to be staying for before deciding on if to drive her away or not.
"Well I have a dry sleeping place over here if you would like to check it out with me," Riptide asked.
Bearspirit was unsure of what to say so she just nodded, she figured why not if another cat was willing to share something with her? Why turn something down when you need it? Riptide turned around and headed up the hill, Bearspirit hesitated for a bit before following the silvery-blue tome. When he stopped at a huge thick bush, he used his tail to lift up some hanging vines that covered an entrance to a very big sleeping place. Padding in, Bearspirit looked around her surroundings and was amazed at how big it was. Spotting a huge nest on the floor she padded over and sniffed it, it smelt like the tom.
"This is a very nice place you have here," Bearspirit said to Riptide when he came in closing the entrance back up.
"Thank you, it took me a whole moon just to find it and finish it up to my liking." Bearspirit sat down in a far corner, planning to sleep there for the night.
"Would you care to try it out?" Riptide asked as he motioned to the nest with his tail.
"Are you sure? It is yours, are you sure you won’t mind me intruding?" Bearspirit asked him, by now she had just stopped wondering what this tom wanted, she was just thankful that she had found a new friend and a kind cat.
"Not at all Bearspirit, come on over and try it out." Bearspirit did and when she lay down in the nest, she was amazed at how soft and comfortable it was there. Laying her head down, she felt her eyes become heavy with sleep, she had no idea how long it had been since she had rested well. When Bearspirit was just about to drift off into a deep sleep, she felt a warm body lay down next to hers, lifting up her head, she spotted Riptide's back was to hers as he laid his head down on his paws and went to sleep. Ugh, OK. This is a tad bit awkward. Bearspirit watched him for a bit before she too couldn't resist sleep and passed out cold.

"Hey Riptide!" Bearspirit jolted awake to a cheery voice above her. Looking up, she spotted another large brown tom just a few paw steps in front of her.
"Hello Jumpstart," Riptide said in a sleepy voice.
"Who is this pretty little she-cat with you today?" Jumpstart asked Riptide though his amber eyes were on her.
"Don't bother her Riptide, she is just passing through. Her name is Bearspirit."
"Bearspirit huh?" Jumpstart said with a smile and a mischievous glint in his eye.
"How are you doing Bearspirit? You're looking mighty pretty today," Jumpstart said and winked at her.
He's flirting with me! A tom is really flirting with me! Bearspirit remained silent, she wasn't used to this and had no idea what she should say so she just smiled and said "Thank you."
"Back of Jumpstart," Riptide said with a hint of a growl in his voice. Jumpstart and Bearspirit looked over at him at the same time, both taken by surprise at his tone.
"Geez, I was only trying to be nice to the little she-cat," Jumpstart said with a hint of an amused purr in his voice.

Bearspirit watched the two toms unsure of what exactly was happening.
"I think I should get going," Bearspirit said. "I don't want to over stay my welcome and it seems you two have something to talk about so I should leave." Bearspirit stood up and began to head to the entrance when another cat came in, this one was a small black she-cat that Bearspirit noticed as a kitty pet with the purple collar giving her away. The she-cat's yellow eyes bore into Bearspirit’s with great hostility.
"Who is this intruder and why is she in our den?" the she-cat hissed at Bearspirit.
"Relax Dark, she is only passing through and Riptide here offered her a place to stay for the night. I just found them this morning and she was just about to leave," Jumpstart said and padded over to the she-cat and licked the tip of her head.
"Well she better hurry up and get out of here then," Dark hissed and spat at Bearspirit when she passed by her. Bearspirit ignored the temper mental she-cat as she headed out of the den sight. Before she could get a few paw steps out of the territory, Bearspirit heard her name being called, turning around she spotted Riptide coming after her.
"What are you doing here Riptide?" Bearspirit asked. "Making sure I left?"
"No, I want to come with you. I don't really like it here and your life seemed interesting to me." Bearspirit just stared at him.
"So...can I?" Riptide asked her again.
"I don't see why not," Bearspirit said unsure of why she said yes to the tom. Riptide's face lit up as he followed her.

Bearspirit and Riptide padded together under the trees, both enjoying each other's company.
"Bearspirit, might I ask you why you were so far? Don't you have a home of your own somewhere?" Riptide asked her.
"My homes were taken away from me. My sister and I were forced to move on until finally we found someplace that we thought would be special and safe and just for us."
"What happened? And you had a sister?" Riptide asked more curiously.
"I had a sister and a brother, both are dead," Bearspirit said.
"Oh," Riptide said and didn't continue the subject any further.
"Might I ask where your mother is? Surely she is worried?" Riptide asked after a while.
"She was captured when I was just a kit, I have no idea where she is now or how she is doing."
"Kits..." Riptide said dreamily.
"Do you have kits? Or any type of family?" Bearspirit asked him.
"Kits? No, I haven’t ever found a mate to have kits with. I would like to though, but it will have to be with a very special cat. As to a family? I never knew them, I ran away when I was old enough to not need my mother’s milk anymore."
"Oh, well that kind of sounds like my life. I never knew my father, I lost my brother as a kit, than my mother and now my older sister. That's why I am so far away from my 'home', my sister died in the flood waters, she had too much water in her lungs. I did everything to save her but I couldn't."
"I'm sorry to hear that. You are a brave cat to be able to carry on, I know many cats wouldn't want to carry on much in life after losing so much. You are surely one strong cat Bearspirit."
"Maybe, maybe not," Bearspirit said. They traveled in silence for a while.
"Riptide?" Bearspirit asked.
"Hm?" Riptide answered.
"I know this may seem sudden and out of the blue, but I really like you, I know we don't know each other very well but I feel like you're the one for me and I was wondering, would you like to be my mate?" Bearspirit was nervous to his answer. She never done anything like this and wasn't really sure of the rules or how to go about it.
"I would love to. I was afraid to tell you that I like you a lot myself," Riptide said back with a purr. Bearspirit smiled and returned his purr back.
"Hello," both cats stopped at a strange voice to their side. Turning their heads, they spotted a black and white kitty pet tom on a fence looking down on them.
"What are you guys doing so close to humans land? It's not safe for stray or wild cats to be around here. Humans here don't like strangers in their town."
"We are only passing through, we will be out of here before nightfall," Riptide told the tom.
"We mean no harm or threat to anyone here. We just wish to be left alone and we will continue on," Bearspirit said.
"It's quite all right, my humans aren’t home. They won't be till nearly sun-down, so you are perfectly ok to stay her for a while and rest before continuing on," the tom said with a smile. His amber eyes reflected the sunlight so it looked like they glowed.
"Thank you, that's very kind of you..."
"Spuddsy," the black and white tom said.
"Thank you Spuddsy," Riptide continued his sentence.
"What's yours?" Spuddsy asked them.
"Mine is Bearspirit and his is Riptide," Bearspirit said introducing themselves to the kind kitty pet.
"Cool names, are you guy’s clan cats?" Spuddsy asked with curiosity.
"Clan cat?" Riptide and Bearspirit asked in unison.
"Ya, cats that live in a huge group. I encountered some of them already on my little outings, they aren’t very friendly to strangers and they look like they are all covered in fleas. Plus not to mention they are big and scary looking. They said they were known as warriors and were clan cats and that kitty pets should stay out of the forest for it is clan territory."
"How mean are they?" Bearspirit asked, wanting to know more of the potential threat that lurked within the trees.
"Mean enough to send you away with deep wounds and a ripped ear," Spuddsy said.
"Have they attacked you?" Riptide asked.
"Not me, Mason though. He's a really fat cat who visited the vet three months ago. He doesn't do much but wonder at the edge of the tree line and even then that's enough for him."
"What did they do to him?" Bearspirit asked.
"They beat him to the point where he needed to go to the vet again. He was badly battered and torn, I thought a fox got him at first until he told me of the big mean cats that jumped him and chased him off after beating him up."
"What's a vet?" Riptide asked.
"A vet is a human, he helps all types of animals out and keep us healthy. He gives us some really horrible medicine that is supposed to keep us safe from diseases that could kill us."
"A human that saves animals?" Bearspirit said confused.
"Ya, not all humans are bad. There are even those cat houses where people pick up un-collared cat off the street, treat them and keep them. Some have millions of cats all in one place!" Spuddsy said.
"Do you have a house mate?" Riptide asked.
"No, my humans only wanted me. Apparently one is enough for them to take care of," Spuddsy said. "I would like a house mate though but my humans would give it away if I brought one in."
"How are the kitty pets around here?" Riptide asked him.
"Some are nice, some are mean like the clan cats. Others could care less about you and completely ignore you, those are the fixed ones."
"Fixed ones?" Bearspirit asked, she was intrigued at how much this tom new and how much she was learning about another cat's life.
"Ya, they can't have kits anymore. The vet does that, that's how humans prevent us cats from having too many kits, apparently too many cats in one place is a nuisance to some people so they prevent it by taking us to the vet to get fixed."
"No kits at all? How could any cat cope with that? Kits are our future!" Bearspirit exclaimed.
"Apparently to humans, what is here is enough of a future for us. Kitty pets are mostly the ones who end up getting fixed, that's why so many escape to prevent a visit to the vet," Spuddsy said.
"What about you?" Riptide asked.
"My humans don't want me fixed. I go outside so I'm of no problem to them. You see, some toms if they are not fixed spray in the house and humans hate that. I learned if a tom doesn't do that they won't take a trip to the vet to be fixed."
"So that's how you evade that? Why not tell the others then?" Riptide asked.
"They don't want to listen to me. They think I'm a strange cat who doesn't know what he's talking about. They think I'm making it all up and that humans fix them because they want them to be too lazy to run away or scratch up the furniture in the house," Spuddsy said.
"That's horrible!" Bearspirit said.
"Its the life of a kitty pet really. We live by a set of rules, it's how we keep our homes and constant food in our bowls and a warm, dry place to sleep and protection from fleas and diseases."
"But don't you ever dream of living out in the wild? Hunting your own food of fresh mice or birds? Don't you dream of sleeping under the stars?" Riptide asked.
"Why would I want to give all of this up? During the cold I have a warm place to stay and constant food delivered right to me. I have comfy places to sleep and loving owners who care for me. I'm not out there becoming a flea magnet or freezing my fur off during winter or getting wet when it rains. I have the pampered life here, why give it all up?" Spuddsy asked, not really understanding why wild cats would want to turn what he has down all the time.
"Because that food is dry and tasteless. Mouse is so much tastier and more juicier than dry kibble food," Riptide said carefully, not wanting to offend this kind tom.
"We have our own opinions about our food Riptide," Spuddsy said. "What you think is gross I think tastes quite nice."
"Now, do you wish for me to show you around? It'll be dark here soon and you look like you could use a good place to sleep," Spuddsy said.
"Yes, thank you," Bearspirit answered and leaped up next to Spuddsy, Riptide was not far behind her.
"Follow me and if any of the other kitty pets ask, just ignore them until we reach my place ok?" Spuddsy told them. Riptide and Bearspirit nodded and followed him closely.
"Hey Spuddsy! Who's that with you?!" A white she-cat called from a slight open window.
"My new friends! Don't mind them they are just passing through!" Spuddsy answered her. That seemed to have eased the she-cats curiosity because she nodded and leaped down from the window and disappeared somewhere in her house.
"Who was she?" Bearspirit asked.
"That’s Winter, she’s nicer than the other kitty pets, but she is more cautious and curious when it comes to new cats in the block," Spuddsy explained. Bearspirit looked back once more at the empty window the she-cat was in before she continued to follow Spuddsy and Riptide.

No one else interrupted their path to Spuddsy's hang out place, everyone seemed to want to keep away from the strange new cats and many of them hissed and ran away.
"How can you stand living here when you're treated so horribly by the other cats?" Bearspirit asked.
"It's nothing really. I just ignore them," Spuddsy said and lead them through a tattered curtain to a nice warm box behind it. Inside, there were many strange looking nests with different padding in them, some even had some sort of yellow stuff in them.
"What’s that yellow stuff?" Riptide asked.
"Foam from inside a couch cushion. We find couches that were thrown away and use the soft foam inside to cushion our beds," Spuddsy explained.
"Who's we?" Bearspirit asked.
"My friends, they sleep here more than I do, but tonight you can have their beds until tomorrow morning. They won't be back till afternoon tomorrow," Spuddsy said and sat by the entrance as Bearspirit and Riptide chose a nest next to each other.
"Comfortable?" Spuddsy asked.
"Very much so, thank you Spuddsy," Bearspirit said. Spuddsy purred and looked at Riptide.
"It's very nice in here, where do your friends normally live?"
"They are kind of like you guys so they don't really have a place to fully stay however they do like to spend some nights in an old lady's house who feeds all the cats in the block," Spuddsy said.
"So they are wild kitty pets?" Bearspirit asked, wondering how cats could live with both paws in two different worlds.
"You could say that," Spuddsy said. "Well, I best be going back, my humans will be here soon and they don't like it when I'm missing for too long. Have a safe journey tomorrow," Spuddsy said and left them alone. Bearspirit and Riptide laid their heads down and went to sleep.
"What is this strange cat doing here?!" Bearspirit woke to a hiss. Opening her eyes she spotted a black she-cat with a purple collar around her neck.
"Relax Dark, she is only passing through, no need to have a hairball over it," Spuddsy said to the she-cat and was met with hostile eyes.
"She is a stranger and in our den!" Dark hissed in Spuddsy's face. "She could have fleas or a disease and you let her come in and sleep in one of our nests?! Are you mad?!" The black she-cat was practically shaking with rage, all of her fur was up and her eyes were in slits. Bearspirit thought she was going to rip the tom's throat out right there she was pouring off so much rage. Spuddsy didn't seem to be bothered by the she-cat's rage at all, in fact he seemed to be laughing silently.
"Let it go Dark," Riptide said beside Bearspirit. "It was my idea to bring her here." Dark turned onto Riptide this time.
"STAY OUT OF THIS!" Dark spat. Bearspirit had enough of all of this yelling and anger at something she had no control over. Standing up, Dark's eyes went right to her and Bearspirit was sure that if she could shoot lazars she would have many holes in her. "Look, there is no need to act so hostile to your friends. I was going to head out first thing in the morning without you guys ever waking up. I meant no harm," Bearspirit said in hopes to calm the black she-cat down. Dark padded up to Bearspirit and she hissed in Bearspirit's face.
"Don't talk to me stray," Dark hissed and went into a strike pose. Bearspirit rolled her eyes and swatted the black cat with a light paw which sent her flying to the other side of the den, both tom's eyed Bearspirit with shocked eyes while Dark climbed back to her paws and shook the dust out of her black fur. Charging at Bearspirit again, Bearspirit leaped so Dark went charging into the den wall, knocking the wind out of her as Bearspirit landed on her paws and kept her eyes on Dark.
"Look, we don't need to fight, can't we talk about this like civil cats?" Bearspirit asked.
"NO!" Dark yelled and charged again, this time colliding into Bearspirit so both she-cats were rolling around the dirt spitting and screaming as claws dug into fur sending tufts of it flying every which way.
"Should we split them up?" Spuddsy asked Riptide.
"Nah, you know what happens when you try to stop she-cats from fighting, might as well rip your own ears off before they do it themselves," Riptide said with a half amused chuckle.
"But they look like they will tear each other to pieces," Spuddsy said.
"I have my trust that Bearspirit will end this without any harm coming to them both," Riptide said hoping his words sounded like he meant it when deep down inside he was worried that both she-cats would hurt each other.
Bearspirit threw Dark off of her and landed on top of the black she-cat, using her weight to pin her down. “Listen to me!” Bearspirit hissed in the she-cat’s ear, “I am not here to fight. I am only passing through and have done nothing to you to give you an excuse to attack me, now stop fighting now or I will be the one to turn this into a bloody scene and you won’t want that.”
“Get off me flea brain!” Dark hissed and tried to wiggle out from under Bearspirit’s weight but she wasn’t budging and inch. “I don’t think so, and have you attack me again? No, I won’t get off until you calm down and are ready to talk to me in a civil way without violence being involved.”
“Told you so,” Riptide whispered in Spuddsy’s ear. “Bearspirit would stop it with no harm done to them.”
“You got lucky she is a good fighter Riptide,” Spuddsy said. “If she was anyone else Dark would have ripped her head clean off and ate it for dinner.”
“Stop exaggerating,” Riptide said. “Dark isn’t that hot headed.”
“So you say, you are always usually away hunting when she blows, you don’t have to deal with it,” Spuddsy said.
“So? She never does it around me now does she?” Riptide asked.
“No…” Spuddsy said before Riptide interrupted him. “Exactly.”
The toms turned their attention back to the two she-cats. Bearspirit seemed to dwarf Dark by a long shot so it was no wonder Bearspirit had no trouble pinning the small she-cat down, and with the thick, brown pelt of hers, Dark’s claws would be no use against it. “Looks like Dark might have calmed down some,” Riptide said.
“Either that or she is just resting and gearing up for another squabble,” Spuddsy said.
“Nah, I think Dark had enough of her butt being handed to her,” Riptide said as the toms watched Bearspirit climb off the smaller black cat and sat in front of her eye to eye.
“Now are you ready to listen?” Bearspirit asked.
“Fine, but don’t expect much from me,” Dark growled.
“I only expect open ears to what I have to say, that’s all.”
“Get on with it already then! I have better things to do!” Dark hissed, her fur fluffing up slightly.
“Shush.” Bearspirit said before beginning.
“My name is Bearspirit, I have come far since I first began my journey. At first I was not alone, like you guys, I had a family. My sister Flufffur and my Brother Darkheart, our mother was known as Breezeflower.” Bearspirit paused to absorb how much the cats were taking in when she noticed some recognition light up in their eyes.
“Did you say Breeze was your mother?” Dark said shocked.
“Yes, you know of her?” Bearspirit asked surprised.
“She was my closest friend before she disappeared, I always thought she was killed,” Dark said and lowered her head.
“Where did the name flower come from?” Riptide asked.
“Mother always loved flowers, so we gave her that name and it stuck with her,” Bearspirit said.
“What happened to everyone?” Spuddsy asked. Bearspirit lowered her head, her ears were drooped and for a while she did not speak.
“They all died,” Bearspirit finally said after what felt like a moon.
“How?!”
“A hawk claimed Darkheart when he was just a kit. Our mother was taken by two-legs, as far as I know she too is dead. My sister, Flufffur, she drowned during the flood, I did everything I could to save her but it was not enough. Losing my entire family, I could not bear to stay in the same place for very long so I kept on moving until I finally found you guys, I had never felt so alone in my life before.”
“Well you are not alone now,” Riptide said.
“Ya! You have us now!” Spuddsy said with a grin. Dark was quiet for a long time before she said.
“Very well, I guess you can stay…for a while anyways. But after you are strong enough you have to leave, its hard enough just providing for three cats here without adding a fourth.”
“I can hunt my own prey, I will not burden your stock,” Bearspirit said.
“Then it’s settled! Welcome to the group Bearspirit!” Spuddsy and Riptide exclaimed together and embraced Bearspirit with gentle grooming and nose touches. Dark stayed behind and just watched the scene through slightly slitted eyes.

Bearspirit woke to birds chirping above her, opening her eye slightly it took her a while to register where she was, but the scents and soft breathing of the other cats around her brought back memories from last night. Standing up, Bearspirit stretched, her muscles ached a bit from the fight with Dark but she knew a good morning’s hunt would do them good and loosen them up some. Quietly slipping out of the entrance of the den site, Bearspirit went in a totally different direction than what the other cats hunted in, she knew where there would be plenty of prey for her and her sleeping companions. Slowly stalking through the underbrush, she soon spotted a plump rabbit lazily eating grass while laying down, not even bothering to look around. Hmm, this looks easy enough, now if only I can get closer to catch the rabbit than we would all eat well Bearspirit thought to herself. Cautiously and carefully, Bearspirit positioned herself behind the rabbit and where the wind was blowing the scent of the rabbit her way. Creeping forward, Bearspirit waited before leaping and killing the rabbit with one quick bite to the back of the neck before she hid the carcass and hunted for some more prey. Sometime during mid-morning, Bearspirit had a grand pile gathering up beneath an old, withering black berry bush. Purring in content at her morning’s findings she worked on bringing all the prey back to the den where the others were just coming out and stretching themselves.
“Wow!” Spuddsy exclaimed seeing the pile that Bearspirit left in the middle of the clearing.
“Great job Bearspirit!” Riptide praised and touched noses with Bearspirit.
“Not bad,” Dark said eyeing the pile for the plumpest piece of prey.
“Where did you find all of this?” Dark asked.
“I know the best hunting spots from traveling around so much.” Bearspirit said.
“And you found all of this in one place?” Riptide asked.
“Not really, I had to branch out the hunting areas, I didn’t want to scare all the prey away in the same area, the rabbit was the first one to go when I found it.” Bearspirit said as she munched on a second rabbit she caught.
“Pretty good for a poor area we have here,” Spuddsy said.
“I didn’t hunt around here, I went slightly further than where you hunt and found loads of prey around just waiting for be snagged for breakfast.”
“At least you kept your word,” Dark said.
“I am a cat that never goes back on her word, my mother has taught me to never go back on what I say otherwise I may just call myself a fox.” Bearspirit said.
“Speaking of that, we have to talk about how you planned on getting here without leading a fox to our place with all this food,” Dark said.
“Easily, I hid the scent. It’s not hard hiding prey’s scent if you know what to look for and how to do it. Flufffur and I had to perfect that skill if we were to ever be able to eat any of our meals in peace.”
“So this Flufffur you keep on bringing up, what did she look like?” Spuddsy asked.
“Oh she looked just like my mother, same body build, coat color and eye color like her. I took on the build of our father, I don’t know where my brown tabby coat came from though. My brother was black, hence the name Darkheart, but despite that he was a sweet tom, and too young to have been taken out of this world.”
“Well, enough chit chat, let’s eat!” Riptide said digging in to some more prey. After what seemed like hours, all the prey was gone leaving four, plump cats laying around in the sun.
“Ah, I almost forgot what it was like feeling so full,” Spuddsy said.
“I hear ya there buddy,” Riptide joined in.
“Oh stop blabbering,” Dark said. “I’m trying to rest.”
Bearspirit watched the other cats, it was almost like having her family back again, but unlike her family, these cats could never hold that kind of spot in her heart. Sighing, Bearspirit looked up at the blue sky, light, fluffy clouds floated through the air on a gently breeze high above them. I wonder if my family is watching over me now. Where would mother be if she were still here? Bearspirit thought and for a second she could swear she saw the shape of two cat heads in the clouds before they disappeared. Smiling, Bearspirit recalled when she last seen her siblings alive, going back down memory lane when they were just kits with their mother, learning how to survive and how to hunt until the tragic moment when the hark struck leading up to Bearspirit’s failed attempt at trying to save her brother’s life. She recalled the fights that Flufffur and she shared only to be followed by make-ups and a nice long nap together in the sun with their mother watching over them. A tear rolled down Bearspirit’s check. She wanted nothing more in life than to have her life back to the way it was before, where her family were all well and together, all grown up and hunting like a true family should. Bearspirit however knew she could not change the past, as much as she would love to, she needed to keep moving on, if not for her sake than for her siblings and her mother’s. They were counting on her to live the life they would have had if tragedy had not struck for them. Getting to her paws, Bearspirit looked over at Riptide, she studied the toms muscular, yet lean body. Despite the huge meal they all had, he seemed to be sleek and thin, agile and swift, traits Bearspirit wished she had but could only make up for in fighting and hunting. Turning to Spuddsy, she memorized the tom, she watched as his paw would twitch off and on, as if he was flicking something in his dream. Turning her gaze to Dark, she noticed the she-cat was watching her.
“Find something interesting?” Dark asked in a curious yet cautious tone.
“I am only trying to memorize those who have helped me, you never know when one will meet up with the other in the upcoming years, its better to remember than fight someone you knew all along.” Bearspirit said, “Why?” she asked.
“Just stay away from Spuddsy, he’s mine,” Dark growled.
“I have no desire in doing anything with him besides just being friends.” Bearspirit assured her.
“Good, if I catch you looking at him in any other way besides friendship, I will rip your ears off,” Dark hissed.
“Remember last time you tried that?” Bearspirit said, referring to last night’s fight.
“Don’t try my patience with you. You are lucky I let you stay here for as long as you are. If you hadn’t been Breeze’s kit I would have kicked you out without hesitation,” Dark said.
“Ah, so now we get to
