After Mrs. Wickly went upstairs and went to bed, I fell asleep as well. It was a bit hard for me to do so after what I had dreamed up all too recently. At around 3:00am I fell back asleep. This time, I didn't dream.
I was feeling very much so like someone had socked me in the face from my lack of sleep. I had woken many times last night after Mrs. Wickly had made her appearance. It was now 5:30am and it was time for me to get ready, it was the first day of school. Hurray! Not.
"Lucy! You're gonna make me late! Take me to school now!" The little brat had his school bag already fastened tightly around himself and was tapping his foot imapiently. Harvey unfolded his arms from his chest and placed them on his hips, his lips pursed in anger."Now."
I glared down at him from the loft. Don't you just love how he spoke to me like I was his dog and I'd misbehaved? Gee, I wonder where he learned to act like that. "I'll be down in a minute." My words were cold and hostile. My jaw clenched. Harvey would be an okay kid if his mother hadn't taught him to be such a thorn in the side. I grabbed my school bag and placed it around my shouldrs. It had many holes in it and the fabric was becoming extremely thin from being used for so long. I didn't get paid at all, even though I was technically an employee. Mrs. Wickly believed it would be improper for her to pay someone who was living in her home. I, however, knew the underlying meaning: "You're not my kid and don't you forget it." Like i'd want to be considered that old hag's child anyways. Unfortunately, because I "worked" here, I had no time to get a real job. Mrs. Wickly had almost made me a full time worker, i.e., I wouldn't even go to school. After reminding her several times that it was illegal and that illegal meant it was against the law, she finally gave in and let me be enrolled. That was about the only time I ever had and ever would, win an argument with Mrs. Wickly. It was also the only thing we had in common, we were extremely stubborn.
