Chapter 2
Paradise is Overrated
I love you- Avril Lavigne
While Lamar has been watching over his cousin and two other young girls, someone else is in his shoes. Her name is Hayden, and she was on the run from her father, with her daemon, Aria- a black jaguar. She was born in Mexico with Mexican heritage, but moved to the US when she was only five. She grew up in Arizona until she discovered her powers, and ran away from home when she was fourteen.
Last year Hayden found two scared boys, and took them under her wing. Their names are Jonah and Noah. They’ve been best friends for years, and they’d only been away from home for a few days before Hayden found them. Jonah’s daemon, a koala named Collin was simply surprised that they weren’t the only ones in the world with their powers. However, Ethan the barn owl was reluctant to follow Hayden. Noah followed her and Jonah anyways, and eventually Ethan grew to like his Talli’s new friends.
Now Hayden is seventeen years old and as beautiful as ever, her dark hair reaching her waist. Jonah is fifteen and getting stronger every day, and his brown hair now long enough to occasionally fall into his hazel eyes. Noah is fourteen, even more curious then before. His short blonde hair, flipped up in the front, stays out of the way of his square glasses.
The two groups did eventually meet. It was about a month ago, and all three boys were excited. Hayden, however, wasn’t happy with the young girls being lead by an “irresponsible boy” and tried to get them to join her. Zamora was extremely stubborn and didn’t want to leave her cousin. Finally after hours of fighting over who got who, Lamar and Hayden came to good terms and decided to continue on with who they started with.
Alice was anxious to show Hayden the cave that they’ve been staying in, considering it was her hopes that it would be where all of them would live soon. The three newbie’s got settled in, and the boys went exploring with Lamar. Hayden stayed behind to talk to the girl’s, and share with each other their powers. Kiwi was amazed at what Hayden could do- she can heal wounds with her hands.
“That’s practically how I met the boys,” Hayden told the girls. “Jonah had a broken leg, and they couldn’t go anywhere. When I found them, I healed Jonah’s leg right up, and they trusted me right away.”
“Don’t they have powers?” Zamora asked. “I just thought they might, because they have daemons.”
“That’s what I asked them, but they said they didn’t. I’m still not sure if I believe them.”
“I understand why. When I first saw them, they felt powerful. It was weird, but I could sense the power that they had.”
“Really? That’s strange.”
“Yeah, but there was a problem. Noah seemed dangerous.”
“What are you talking about? He’s the most peaceful person I know. Occasionally Jonah and I would get into an argument, and he would calm us down really easily. It’s weird but I’ve always found him calming.”
“Maybe I’m just imagining things.”
Hayden nodded and Alice changed the subject. Later we found out why Zamora felt like that, but I’m getting ahead of myself.
Jonah and Lamar just came back from finding food.
“Find anything good?” Kiwi asked.
“Mostly just fish,” Jonah said. “But eat up everyone, there’s plenty more where that came from.” Everyone sat down around the fire that Zamora started, cooked their food, and ate until they were full.
“I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve been full since I left home,” Alice said. “Where did you guys go to find the fish?”
“A river a few miles from here,” Lamar said. “Noah found it when he was on a walk yesterday, right Noah?”
“Huh?” Noah asked, looking up quickly in surprise. “Yeah, right.”
“Which way did you go?” Kiwi asked.
“Well I went on the usual path down the hill, until that huge boulder. I turned left there, and kept going until I found a stream. When I saw a few fish in it, I came back to tell Lamar about it.”
“That’s strange. I’ve been to that stream before, but it’s never even had enough water to hold any fish.”
Zamora suddenly looked up and said, “Noah, come with me.” She stood up and walked out of the cave so fast, no one had time to ask her why. Noah followed her out side, and saw her sitting by a tiny stream. “Noah, I want you to look at this creek, and imagine the other stream that you found.”
“But Zamora-“
“Just do it, trust me.”
Noah sighed and did as he was told. After only a few seconds, the tiny creek turned into a medium stream. And a minute after that, it was almost four feet wide, and three feet deep.
Noah stood there stunned, while a wide smile spread across Zamora’s face.
“Hey guys!” She yelled towards the cave. “Come out here! And hurry!”
After only a few seconds everyone was outside, watching the stream get deeper and wider. They had to back up a few steps just to keep their feet dry.
“Noah,” Jonah asked. “Are you doing this?”
“I’m not sure,” Noah said quietly.
Zamora chimed in with, “Of course he is! He’s like me, only with water! Can’t you see that?”
“That actually makes sense,” Hayden said. “When we met, you said he felt dangerous. It’s because his water can put out your fire.”
Zamora nodded in agreement, turned to Jonah, and said, “Have you ever felt like he was dangerous?”
Jonah looked at her strangely and asked, “Why would I?”
“Well I felt something about you, too. You weren’t a danger to me; you might have even been helpful.”
“You know what this means,” Alice said. “Don’t you Jonah?”
“No,” he said confused. “I’m completely lost right now.”
Alice continued, “If Zamora can control fire- and Noah can control water- and she felt like he could do something like that, then you must be able to!”
Jonah just stared at Alice and said, “There is no way I-“
“No,” Kiwi interrupted. “Alice is right. There’s something connecting you all to each other. It’s like in the stories my grandpa use to tell me, about people who bend and work with the four elements.”
“Exactly,” Alice said. “The four elements are Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. Meaning if you’re connected to them, you must be able to bend air or earth. It’s only science.”
“Hold up,” Lamar pitched in. “How are they connected if they aren’t related? I can see Zamora’s future clearly, while everyone else’s is hazy.”
“I’m not sure,” Kiwi said. “But does it really even matter? Blood relations don’t really add up with us.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You said that both of your parents don’t have powers like you do. I know that my parents didn’t, and so does Alice. So if you have a power, it doesn’t necessarily mean that who ever you’re related to will have powers.”
“Like my sister,” Hayden said. “When I showed her my power, she ran away in fear. And neither of my parents have a power either.”
“I don’t think any of ours do,” Alice added.
“Yeah, my parents kicked me out and told me to never show my face again.” Jonah said.
“That’s horrible,” Kiwi whispered. “What did you do?”
“I ran away from home with Noah, and so far I haven’t gone back. There have been times that I wanted to once, but Noah and Collin have stopped me. Thank goodness too, because it would be the biggest mistake of my life.”
“Why would it be so horrible?”
Jonah’s face flushed red and he looked down trying to hide it before he said quietly, “I would’ve never met you guys.”
“Well I know I’m glad they stopped you,” Lamar whispered. “All of you are awesome. Even though it’s been sort of hard, I’m glad I met Alice and Kiwi too. I think it’s good that Zamora can be around girls her age.”
Zamora smiled and said, “Yeah, and now you have Noah and Jonah to hang out with. I’m sure you’re glad to not be the only boy anymore.”
“Wait a minute,” Hayden chimed in. “What do you mean anymore?”
“Well I thought you guys would be traveling with us now. I don’t see any reason to say goodbye after meeting. Besides, if we travel in a bigger group, the more likely it is that we’ll stay safe.”
Hayden just smiled at Zamora then asked the boys, “Does this sound like an OK plan?” Even though she knew the answer, she wanted to see their eyes light up. She noticed when they first met each other that Jonah seemed shy around Kiwi- which is mainly weird because he’s never shy.
She also realized how much more Noah smiles, and how he laughs whenever Alice tells a joke. Even if it’s not that funny, he’ll be cracking up and unable to breathe. Hayden thinks it’s cute that the boys have ended up falling so quickly and hard.
“Absolutely!” Jonah exclaimed with excitement.
“Of course,” Noah said, smiling from ear to ear.
********************************************************************************************
Later that night almost everyone was already asleep, except Noah and of course Alice.
Alice was sitting at the opening of the cave, starring at the stars. She had been waiting for almost an hour to hear the howling in the distance. She knew it wasn’t a full moon yet, but it was coming up. Maybe she would get lucky and they would call out earlier than usual. No such luck. Instead her mind wandered to her life before she knew about her powers. She wondered where she would be if she didn’t have them.
The one thing she knew for sure is that she wouldn’t have so many people to call her friends. Kiwi is by far her best friend, but Zamora comes in very close. Lamar is like the older brother she never had, and Hayden is the same, but a sister. Jonah was the one who would protect her from anything, and always knew the right thing to say. And Noah, well he’s the one who always knows how to make her laugh.
Noah’s never been able to fall asleep easily in the cave. However tonight he couldn’t fall asleep at all. There was a shadow that kept falling over him, and it was about time that he go and search for it. He found his glasses, put them on, and looked at the entrance of the cave- where he found Alice sitting alone. He couldn’t help but be curious as to if she was OK, so he got up quietly- making sure not to wake the others- and walked over to her.
He contemplated whether or not he should say something for several minutes. Finally he decided to just lean on the wall of the cave, and look at the stars like she was. He looked for Orion’s belt, then the North Star. He didn’t know much about space, but he knew a lot about the constellations. It was always his favorite part about seeing his grandpa before he died- the stories that he would tell. He talked about the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. Noah ate it all up like his favorite food. After his grandpa died is when he knew he was different from others. Even though he discovered his powers earlier that day, he still always felt awkward and out of place. Thinking back on his life at school was hard for him, and he let out a loud sigh.
“Oh!” Alice exclaimed, jumping. “Noah, I didn’t realize you were there.”
Noah blushed and said, “Sorry Alice, I-I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“It’s fine, but how long have you been there?”
“Only a few minutes…”
“Oh, could you not sleep either?”
“Nope, I haven’t been able to for quite some time.”
“That must suck. But why do you never come talk to me?”
“I never knew you were awake this late until tonight. Do you always stay up?”
“Yeah, pretty much. But it’s a long story.”
Noah nodded in understanding and sat down next to Alice. Looking down he asked, “Hey Alice, can I ask you a question?”
“Yes, of course. Anything you want,” she replied.
“Where do you see yourself in five years?”
Alice was surprised with the question, but answered truthfully. “Hopefully I’ll be in a good home. Maybe by then some family will accept me for who I am. But I know that’s never going to happen. In a realistic sense, I want to be traveling on the other side of the forest. Maybe even with the group.”
Noah smiled and asked, “What if it was just the two of us?”
Alice looked at him, very confused, and just looked down.
“I could take care of us. I’d fish and stuff like that.”
Alice giggled a little and looked into Noah’s blue eyes, only to see him looking into hers. The two of them sat in silence just starring at each other.
“Alice,” Noah whispered softly.
“Yes?” she replied, even quieter.
“I’m serious you know, about taking care of you.”
“I know you are, but I can’t just leave Kiwi.”
“She could come too,” Noah smiled, holding onto Alice’s hand. “She’d be a great addition.”
“Noah, how far into the future are we looking here?”
“I’m not sure, but whenever you’re ready, I will be too.”
“You goofball,” she giggled, punching his arm lightly.
Noah just smiled and wrapped his arm around Alice’s shoulder, and intertwined his fingers with hers.
“Do you like me?” Alice said after a few minutes.
“Of course,” Noah answered. “What’s not to like?” And for the first time in over a year, Alice fell asleep without a worry on her mind. She wasn’t even thinking about the wolf and bear. She just laid in Noah’s arms peacefully.
Noah was slowly drifting to sleep, but then suddenly he heard something. His eyes shot open, but he didn’t move a single muscle- he didn’t want to wake up Alice. He looked around through his glasses, and held onto her a little tighter for safety. He was just about to relax when he heard a deep grumble come from the bush, not even ten feet away.
