Can you help?:
-Think about yourself.
Is there anything different
about you? Something someone
would think is worth writing about?

-Can you explain it easily
and well?
If so, can
you think of how some-
one's life would be diff-
erent without your
trait & therefore be helpful
to give a writer the exact
info they need to write a
believable character, event,
or setting?

╚═════════════╝
|||ᴡᴇʟᴄᴏᴍᴇ!

Hello! So, for a long time, I've wanted to write diverse characters. It's a worthy goal, and there's a whole writing campaign/program based on it (We Need Diverse Books campaign). But the thing is, writing is about sounding natural. You want a unique, believable character who has an interesting narrating style. I've always wanted to write about people of different ethnicities, of different faiths; immigrants, bilinguals, those with disabilities. I want to write about other places too: people from different states, countries, even continents.
But what can I do? I've always lived in the same state and don't travel often, let alone flown to another country. I've always even lived in the same county, actually! And what about people? I can't up and change my skin color, my first language, or my birthplace.
As writers, we know a lot about research. Chances are, even for a modern day, slice-of-life YA project, you've spent a little time researching. But you can't exactly find a lot of information on the daily lives of, say, Canadians--or South Koreans--and where their lives differ from yours.
╔═════════════╗

Are you right for this?
You are potentially an
ambassador.
A map. A guide.
An encyclopedia.
Are you helpful? Are you
patient enough to say
the same things
2-3x, or to spend a long time
writing a master-post?
Do you care? Are you
passionate about bringing unique,
diverse characters to fiction?
Or, because you live there,
do you want to read a
French Dystopia, a Turkish
romance?

╚═════════════╝
╔═════════════╗

So, you're a fit, huh? What now?!
-Now, pinpoint your differences!
Can you explain them?

Are you an older sister of foster kids?
Can you explain the training you & your
parents had to take to be eligible?
Are you a competitive athlete with
medals? Can you tell of the sheer amount of
work & energy it takes to get up early
even when you can hardly move, stiff &
in pain?
Are you mixed? Can you share
about your racial identities,
which ones you identify more
or less of?

╚═════════════╝
How often does a Canadian say 'eh'? I'm guessing it's a lot less than what TV shows us. Do Koreans really like kimchi enough for it to be their national food? (I've done a little non-writing-related research on South Korea, and apparently it's actually a yes for many ^^)

This stuff is not out there! The information I need is not easy to find. If I wanted to write a Jewish girl's perspective of Purim, I might find something on ancient Purim practices, not modern-day facts. Or, I might find a modern-day discussion of how an Jewish man celebrates Purim with his family--but if it's not a girl's opinion, I don't have everything I need. (I am using this as an example because Purim was just a couple days ago as of this post. I doubt it's thought of any differently depending on your gender.)
It's hard to sound realistic and natural without knowledge. And in some cases, it's hard to find it. Impossible, in most. So I decided, today is the day. I'm buckling down and making a writing resource thread for this. This is going to be hard work. But I know you can help, too. This is something even non-writers can help with! If you are interested, keep reading.
..........................................
╔═════════════╗

Can you treat others w/ respect?
-If you can't answer right away, a
writer should be told
when they can
expect the answer by.

-If the writer is rude to you in a PM,
respond kindly.
But feel free to PM me
about the issue & I'll deal with it
somehow.

-Realize that questions may be asked in a
manner that may offend you,
especially if it's a religious, racial, or
LGBTQ+ question.

The questions aren't meant to be mean,
though--why would they A. willingly PM you,
& B., write about the negative thing
if they actually hated it?

-Stereotypes are widely-known.
Don't be snarky if someone believes them.
They are on your side! They're asking for your
story/ies to fairly represent you. They
sought you out. Stay calm!

-Staff positions (stamp/icon maker, coder [I really need one >.<], thread/rule question-answerer): Open!
-Created 3/25/2016

|ʀᴜʟᴇs ғᴏʀ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇʀs|
☑Do: Ask questions that can't be found with an online search. Be original! Don't waste the Answer Ambassadors' time.
☑Do: Treat the Ambassadors with respect when asking a question. Make sure to thank them.
☑Do: Write maturely, like a real writer! Make sure your questions are well-written so we can all understand you.
☑Do: Make sure you know if the Ambassador answers thread questions or PMs. Follow their guidelines appropriately.
☑Do: If it's a shared story: feel free to acknowledge the user if it's CS-wide. If not, ask the Ambassador personally if they want to be acknowledged.
☑Do: Look up cultural no-no's first. In the American Deaf community, for example, deafness is not considered a disability. Don't ask a Deaf Ambassador something like, 'How do you feel about your disability?' They'll probably say, 'What disability?' This helps you get more 'rare' information when you get the 'common' info out of the way first. Also, it helps you not offend/looks seriously dumb to the Ambassador.
☑Do: Make sure your Ambassador is still active.
☑Do: Follow the traditional way of asking (the Ambassador's name large & centered at the top, or the topic of your question. Look below for examples)
✗Don't: Ask a question without looking at their personal guidelines post.
✗Don't: Ask a question without looking at the FAQ.
✗Don't: Say, "I'm so sorry!" to a disabled/special needs user when addressing them. Seriously, look up some do's and don'ts for interacting with differently-abled people. They deserve respect too.
✗Don't: Ask a question if their answerbox is closed.
Can and will be changed depending on the thread's activity. If you don't follow the rules, you may not get very helpful Ambassadors. That means less help for your story. So be on your best behavior!

Mᴀsᴛᴇʀᴘᴏsᴛᴇʀ VS PMᴇʀ VS ᴛʜʀᴇᴀᴅ ʟᴜʀᴋᴇʀ
Master Post:
√One big, long post on your topic(s). By far the
least time consuming.
√Good for those who don't want to answer the
same thing twice.
√Good for the community!
✘Pretty boring, extremely dull on its own.
PMer:
√Fun, engaging, good for personalizing
✘ Time-consuming.
✘Only reaches one person at once
(unless you start the PM
& add people in)
Lurker:
√Fun, engaging, good for not answering the same
things over and over.
√Keeps you close to the community where you
can spy on your fellow AA's learn
alongside the writers.
√May help get you noticed as a writer on CS,
get more fans if your story is in your siggy.
(Free advertising)
✘Super time-consuming.
✘Might get people who don't use the search function
(re-ask the same questions).
✘You may miss the post.
✘The asker/writer may miss your answer.

Form Ideas & Question/Answer Formats
For right now, my form, filled out to give you guys help.

Username: Narnian4ever (nicknames are Narnia, Narnian)
Will I be changing it? If so, to what?: Nope, not in the foreseeable future/ever.
Why do I want to be an AA?: (2 sentences) I want to read interesting books with lost of diversity. I have a passion for writing and want to help others learn how to write people different from them.
I believe I can help books become diverse by: Sharing about my differences & running this thread!
What's different about me: Christian, twin, homeschooler, ASL student, runner, singer
What I'll answer questions on: Any of these things! Also, the culture in America/the South, Christian Culture, Homeschool culture (and how it's intertwined in some areas)
Will I be posting on the Master List or be a PM/thread frequenter?: All 3
I'm a writer: Yes!
I will visit: Here's where it gets tricky. I'm busy (who isn't?) but I'll try to come on every weekend, more if possible.
I'm worth considering because: I don't need to write this, I'm the boss. :P

~Question format~

@Narnian4ever: Hi, I'd like to ask you about being a twin. Are there really such a thing as evil twins? Does it really matter who's older? Will one be smarter than the other? What's it like to not be able to be known by your own name-- or always having to answer to your sibling's name, too?

~Answer Format~
@User (or PMed to User, if asked for a PM)
Nope, no such thing. Evil twins are really pointless-- and kind of offensive, actually. We twins are people, not carbon copies of each other with a little evil thrown in. Twins are more than a plot point!
No, it doesn't matter. But some people still ask us even though it matters even less to them. Also, some twins love holding it over the other's head, but other than that, it's not important.
No. One will not be smarter. We develop different personalities, so one may be more inclined to like school or to work harder, though (and therefore appear smarter).
It's sad to never be my own person, honestly. I think it makes me miss out on friendships. People are afraid to guess my name wrong, or they play it off like they don't have to know it. If I have to learn yours, you should learn mine. It's just common courtesy. Twins will love you if you make an effort, apologize for getting it wrong, and don't joke off a mistake. Twins are unique people, not two sides of a mirror. Use their names!

Will I be changing it? If so, to what?: not planning to any time soon.
Why do I want to be an AA?: I like helping people, and this seems like an awesome idea! I feel that I might have something to contribute.
I believe I can help books become diverse by: Sharing what I know.
What's different about me: I'm homeschooled, a Christian, moved lots (does that help?) I also have a brother with Down Syndrome, so I might be able to help with that. Oh, my Dad's also a paster. (Or he was... He's unemployed atm, maybe I can help with that! XD) Oh, I also volunteer at our Riding for the Disabled, so I know a bit about horses, (not more than beginners level though, and I can't ride) and a bit the diffrent disabilities I work with.
What I'll answer questions on: (include levels of skill in sports/activities/): Christian things, Homeschooling things, living with a brother with Down Syndrome. What it's like to move a lot. Horse stuff, (beginners, I won't be much help in this.)
Will I be posting on the Master List or be a PM/thread frequenter?: Not exactly sure what this means, but I'll pop up on the thread, and people can pm me.
I'm a writer: Yes. Very much so.
I will visit blank times per blank: Lots daily.
I'm worth considering because: I'm helpful, friendly, and like to help people!
