Feyth was raised with the knowledge that her mother had died protecting her and those her mother loved. Nobody told her that Ahria had died protecting more than those she loved. Nobody told her that she was more powerful than she thought. Nobody told her that the fate of both the North Land and the South Land depended on her. And nobody told her that her entire life would change with one spark.

Hey there! My name is Coldish, but you can call me Cold, Coldi, Unicorn, whatever floats your boat. This is a story I wrote back in 2013, for NaNoWriMo. I wrote a 56,000 novel, title North & South, which I originally planned to continue, however it was really poorly written. Lots of plot holes, pretty bad storyline, and even though I edited it, I wasn't quite happy with it. For a while I've intended to rewrite it, and now I'm going to. First change was the title, because I discovered that there's already a North and South, so I've changed it to Storms and Starlight. I've changed some character names and although I wanted to change the main character's name because I've changed a bit about her character, it wouldn't be the same story if she changed. I have no intention of publishing this, it's purely for fun, so please don't take it too seriously. I love feedback, but I often don't take criticism into account because I am a very stubborn person. Regardless, criticism is appreciated, and I will try to not be rude about it...
Ugh I'm really annoyed because I had another couple of linked stories I really wanted to write with an amazing storyline but I got writer's block and ditched the idea >.< one day?

She lay unmoving, staring into the darkness before her. She knew he was there, watching her, pitying her weakness.
“You’re too late, Ahria, the city is lost. Four have fallen, there’s no hope for you. Give up now and maybe I’ll let you keep your miserable life.”
His voice filled the dry air, echoing menacingly. His tone dripped with venom and hatred, as if mere words could kill her.
But she would not be defeated so easily. Even cornered, hopelessly bleeding out upon the cobblestone, Ahria refused to give in. She raised her arm and brought her hand into a fist, as if trying to catch her escaping life.
Lightning cracked overhead, providing little light in the unnatural darkness. Even so, a frightening howl of pain was heard, loud enough to split eardrums.
“I would rather die than live by your mercy!” Ahria cried, her voice breaking as she gasped in pain. Droplets of water began showering from the sky, soon forming a torrential storm.
“You will regret your entire existence when I’m done with you,” the voice whispered, his whisper only audible to Ahria. Around her the darkness dissipated and she bore witness to the horrendous wounds that were slowly killing her.
A large gash stretched from her shoulder blade down to her belly button. Her shirt was ripped, allowing blood to drip from the torn flesh, only to be washed away by the rain. Her breath hitched at the sight and she couldn’t bear to look for more than a few seconds.
Blue orbs appeared before her, shining amidst the swirling darkness, daring her to scream. She lay still, silent, but allowed her lips to part into a whisper.
“Step out of the darkness, coward.”
“I am the darkness, sweet Ahria,” he replied, his voice calmer than ever. “Surrender the child, or she too will die.”
“She’s gone, Pitch. You will never find her,” Ahria spoke with conviction, but pain was evident in her trembling voice.
“I will find her, and she will die,” he spat, before allowing the darkness to overcome him. He left her crumpled body lying in the stinging rain and disappeared. The darkness remained, no longer a swirling mass obscuring all, but the darkness of night, lit by the illumination of the moon.
Ahria’s breaths came in gasps, her heart raced and her mind whirled. There was no hope for her; she would surely die here, alone, wondering if her child would be safe. The agony she was suffering did not compare to the torment biting within her, telling her that her daughter would be hunted down and killed.
She had always imagined dying, but she’d always imagined dying at peace, surrounded by those she loved. Instead she would die crying in the rain, with those she loved dead. A realization overcame her, causing her to shudder in fear.
They had failed.
All their life they’d been told they would accomplish much. All their life they’d been trained, prepared for what was to come. They knew who they were and what they would do. It was no surprise when Pitch arrived, claiming that the world was destined to fall into eternal darkness.
It was no surprise when they fought, light against dark. It didn’t surprise the others. But it did surprise Ahria, for she had not expected Pitch. She couldn’t bring herself to fight him and because of her hesitation, the others died defending her. She had killed them. She deserved to die, but not her daughter.
But more than her daughter was in danger. Pitch wanted the entire South Land, without anyone to defend against him, he would surely bring perpetual darkness to the land.
The rain softened, the drops now pattering on the ground. Ahria closed her eyes and let her breaths deepen.
“My sweet Lady. I know it’s my fault. I know you are angry. You made a mistake when you chose me, or maybe I made a mistake when I chose him. I am not asking for forgiveness, please protect her.
“Please watch over her as she grows. Let the town protect her, so that she can lead a full life. Please don’t let any harm come to her.
“I know it’s my duty to protect her…but I can’t,” Ahria choked, tears cascading down her face, splashing to the ground and mixing with rain and blood.
“Dangerous times are ahead, and I fear the worst. She will live in a time of darkness, but you can protect her.
“She cannot die. Let her live. Please let her live. Don’t let her follow a path like mine. I made a mistake. Protect her. Please,” Ahria whimpered, breaking into a fit of coughs that sent agony shooting through her body. Her back arched and she clutched her wound.
Her body was on fire and the rain did little to cool the searing pain. She couldn’t say anything more, her voice refused to work.
She opened her eyes, but her vision danced with black spots. Vertigo overcame her and she retched blood. She laid her head on the cobblestone, her hair spread across her paling face. She could no longer move; her body was stiff, as if she were already dead.
She let out one last breath, long and effortless. The rain seized and so did her heartbeat. Her vision brightened, until everything turned white.
I’m sorry.

╳ Yeah, the prologue is pretty short, I didn't want to spoil anything, just wanted to show how Ahria dies because it's pretty important. The actual chapters will be longer and this will be the last you'll see of Ahria ╳
