chapter one
Pale morning sunlight drifted into the small and cramped room of his. The sunlight was tinted orange and red, creating the illusion of fiery colors showering the floor and bed. We all knew where the actual coloration came from, so no questions needed to be asked. I looked at the huddled figure covered by thin gray bed sheets. “Cye, come on. Its 30 minutes ‘till boarding.” I could feel the irritation skipping around my throat and swallowed it down. This is the 10th year of boarding. You are nervous, not upset at Cye. You can’t be angry at your brother now. Not this time.
I sighed aloud and stepped closer to the bedside. I swung out my arm to shake Cye out of bed, my charm bracelet jingling innocently on my wrist. The noise almost made me sick. My arm almost knocked over the bottles of sunblock sitting on the dresser. “Cye!” I raised my voice. Cye suddenly sat up, his amber eyes wild and gingery hair unkempt. “Its 30 minutes until we boarding, idiot.” I sniffed. “Get ready.” Cye’s expression quickly turned from exhaustion and fuzziness to shock. “What?!” He cried. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” He scrambled out of the jumble of sheets and snatched his big framed glasses. He pounded away, his swift footsteps loud on the tiled floor.
“Nerd.” I muttered and stepped out of Cye’s room. The air in the home was chilly as always, but soon enough I would have as much heat as I need. My stomach churned with nervousness and apprehension. I let out a deep breath and a strand of ginger hair blew onto my face. I pushed it behind my ear, feeling the powder from it tickle my fingertips. Ash. We all knew its feeling by now. All of our hair contained the gray substance. It seasoned our food, smothered homes into a gray embrace, and suffocated innocents. Ash was powerful and fatal.
I felt the coolness of the black tiles on my feet. I walked over to the bathroom in the center of the hallway and saw Cye having a drone brush his teeth. Even if we lived in the homeless shelter, they could afford decent things. I gestured with my hand for a sleeping drone to start combing out my ginger locks. The drone buzzed and took to the air with quiet whizzing noises. I absently stared into the cloudy mirror in front of us. The piece of glass had a vintage black border around it, and only a small crack in the top right corner that revealed its true age. Supposedly the homeless shelter had stood here since 2071, the Global Internet Rights war period, the mirror coming with it. The mirror seemed to soften anyone’s features who gazed into it, wrapping its grace and fragility into the viewer’s face.
This mirror actually meant little to me, but to Cye it was the only important thing of the entire homeless shelter. Since the day he was taken off the SkyTram system, he had found the bathroom his room of focus. The mirror takes his mind off of the world, and what would happen on this very day.
The drone finished brushing my hair and I looked over at where Cye was standing moments ago. He was gone, but his drone was still flying around the bathroom. Huh. I thought. He must have gone downstairs and to the station. I saw my argyle green bag sitting by the way down the steps and I scooped it up. It felt worn and old, but comforting. I had my few possessions packed into it and a few books to keep me busy. So that means it was pretty heavy. I plodded down the steps with my bag strapped onto my shoulder. The heat began to gather as I stepped down by the door of the homeless building. I inhaled sharply and willed my sunblock that I had applied earlier to be sufficient. I walked forward and grabbed the door handle. It felt like embers were dancing on its surface, but I quickly threw open the door. The heat hit me like a wave of salty ocean water.
Humidity immediately set into my fiery locks, making me begin to sweat already. It must be hotter today than ever. I was standing on the porch made of limestone. Even the normally cool stones were a force of heat. I blinked and hopped off the porch. My feet scuffed shoeprints into the sand and stone. I gazed out onto the town. It was as busy as usual, the scent of ash, dust, and baked goods wafted around the town square. Vendors chugged down water and wiped foreheads in exhaustion. My mouth tried to water at the sight of the precious bottled liquid but failed. I heard a subtle roaring sound above my head and looked up. I averted my eyes away from the blazing sun that boasted colors of deep orange, scarlet, and gold. Ash almost drifted into my eyes, but my thick glasses protected me from it.
I was looking up at the SkyTram. It looked battered and drippy from the heat, but it was intact and able to function. The Trams flew by at impossible speeds, reaching people’s destinations around the Globe within minutes. I saw the huge lift-up for the SkyTram and jogged over. I hopped into the hovercar and felt it vibrate as it flew up. I took this opportunity to gaze out upon the place I called home. The homeless shelter used to be an old wooden home, but when the solar flares hit tore it down and rebuilt it all with various stones. I turned my head to the right and saw the town. The town was a circle of cobblestone with shops, homes, and merchants scattered around. We didn’t have any factories here, like the other towns, but we imported from them. What our town was famous for is the SkyTram.
The hovercar came to a stop slowly as the metal floor of the SkyTram became reachable. People were running around, looking for their kids and friends to say farewell. I must have been right on time. I gazed around at the families sobbing in each other’s arms, friends promising to write to each other, and siblings holding one another for the last time.
“Ardelia! Over here!” I heard a familiar voice call and I spun around. Cye stood by the metal walls of the SkyTram, waving his arms wildly in my direction. I headed over to him swiftly. “Hey, how’s the traffic today seem?” I asked. Cye sniffed. “Like a bunch of bumbling idiots. We all were informed of what would happen today, just get over it already people.” I nodded in agreement, but I couldn’t blame the people. It must be hard to have your children ripped from your protection by the government to server as scientist slaves for the rest of their lives.
“All children going aboard, please get in an orderly fashion in front of the SkyTram doors. Thank you.” A robotic intercom voice boomed into the area. I exchanged a glance with Cye as kids our age stepped away from friends and family to step into line. I took ahold of my bag on my shoulder and adjusted it. “Ready?” I asked Cye. He was still looking into my eyes. I felt a slight shiver run down my spine, even in this heat, as his amber eyes bore into my conscience. He blinked slowly as to break the trance. “Yes. I’ve been ready for this for quite a while.” He murmured. I nodded and took a place next to him. I was nervous, I was sad to leave my town, I was stunned by Cye’s awkward stare into my eyes. But I was not afraid. The only reason I wasn’t afraid was I didn’t know what would happen next.

chapter two
“Cye Ocano?” The man asked. We were boarding the SkyTram car, getting prepared to be shipped to a science lab people only referred to as ‘the slave camp’ or SPS-34. I had no idea what SPS-34 meant at the time, but we would both find out. “Yes, I am Cye Ocano.” Cye said, pushing his glasses up on his nose. The man nodded and pointed Cye into the car. I was right behind him. “Okay miss, you are Ardelia Kinnear, correct?” He looked me up and down, and it was slightly awkward. “Yes, I am.” He nodded and pointed me in the same direction as Cye. I walked into the SkyTram car and it was the most crowded place I’ve been in.
Some kids were crying silently or loudly, others were chatting with friends, others just sat and read a book. I saw Cye waving me over to him. The seat he was occupying had a lot of people around it but nobody was sitting in a spot next to him. I headed over to him and laid my green bag down. “This is really weird.” I said as he turned to me. “I know. Some kids here don’t even know where they’re going.” He added in a lower voice. My mouth dropped open in shock. Cye smiled. “At least we’ll be working together.” He said and looked at me. His eyes are so strange. I said. They were an unnatural amber and goldish color, but beautiful nevertheless. I blinked. Ardelia, stop it. He’s like your brother. I shook the thoughts out of my head. “Yeah.” I finally responded.
Cye pushed up his glasses yet again. A voice at the front of the car seemed to grab everyone’s attention. “Hello everyone. Today I will be your driver.” A woman in a white blouse, khakis, and a light brown jacket was holding a nanophone that she was speaking into to get the kids to hear her. Her hair was a dark ginger like the rest of ours. “My name is Allyn and I’ll be bringing you to the facility.” The woman seemed to speak to everyone but only look at me. Her eyes were intent and seemed to fill with emotion like a bucket being filled with water. The deep green depths of her eyes seemed to grab onto me. She broke the stare and said, “We will be arrived at the facility in about an hour. Please behave in an orderly fashion.” She went over to the seat of the SkyTram car and began to fly away.
“Just what is she talking ‘bout when she says ‘facility?” A boy who was sitting in the clump of people in front of us said. His hair was a light red, with streaks of black in it. It wasn’t ash that highlighted his locks, he had dyed it black. I blinked. Usually kids couldn’t get their hands on hair dye. Maybe he just hasn’t spent his whole life outside, like me. Cye sniffed at the boy’s comment and pushed up his glasses again. “Maybe you should just shut up and wait to see.” He muttered. The boy’s eyes turned to Cye, fixing him with a narrowed glare. “Oh yes, of course hon, I’d be glad to shut myself up.” The boy said in a mocking tone and his companions at his side laughed.
I felt anger pulse in my veins. “Screw off.” I barely knew the words left me until he turned to face me. “’Scuse me sweetheart, but this isn’t your conversation. Now back off, m’kay?” He said to me and his handsome face curled in a smirk. The people around him giggled and laughed. I scowled at him. Cye nudged me. “Just leave him alone, I don’t want you getting involved with him.” Since when did you become a mother to me? A pulse of resentment grew in my stomach but I took a deep breath in. Ardelia, he has a right to be concerned. All you are is a girl. I blinked and let the breath out quietly. The words echoed in my mind.
“So, sweetie, is this nerd over here your lovebird?” The boy asked, his mouth screwed up in a smirk still. He leaned closer to me and chuckled. “I don’t have time to date anyone.” I scoffed and leaned against the corner of my seat. He looked at me and chuckled. “A girl as pretty as you, I’m not surprised you don’t already have a soulmate.” My face became hotter than it was in the heat. I’m blushing. I thought as the boy laughed. “Issac, you already have a girl. Stop flirtin’ with them all.” A dark orange haired boy scoffed. Issac smiled. “Kassandra isn’t as beautiful as her though.” My face became redder and I blinked. A girl turned to look at Issac as if he had grown another head. She quickly turned back around to her friends and they started whispering urgently.
“Uhh..” I stammered. Cye looked angry at Issac, his fists clenched and eyes narrowed. “I have a book I should be finishing.” Issac smiled and showed his white teeth slightly. Wow.. that’s actually a really handsome smile.. I thought as I quickly yanked out a thick book. It was called ‘Indencize’. I had already gotten through about 350 pages, and it’s pretty good. But that’s beside the point. I only read books when I’m tired and need to relax, and Cye knew that. He could tell something was up.
“Stay away from me and Ardelia, okay Issac?” Cye’s normally cheery voice seemed as sharp as daggers and as angry as a wildfire. Why does Cye seem to hate Issac so much? I took the book out of my face and peered over at the two boys. Cye’s eyes were narrowed and his eyebrows were arched with anger. “Whatever you say, bro.” He chuckled and reached forward to pat Cye on the knee. Cye recoiled and a look of disgust masked his face. The anger was still there of course. “Don’t touch me, or call me ‘bro’. EVER.” He spat.
My eyes widened. I quickly scooted over to Cye, who was clenching his fists and staring at his knee where Issac had touched him. “Cye, calm down. He was only being arrogant. It’s alright..” I murmured these words to him and he seemed to relax; his tense body relaxed and the fire in his eyes was extinguished. “You’re right, Ardelia. Sorry about getting so worked up.” He looked me in the eyes once more. They looked pained and a bit red, as if he was holding back a waterfall of tears.
Pity and curiosity stirred in my stomach. Cye had basically been my brother figure in my life, although it wasn’t genetics that bonded us. Though what about Issac was upsetting him? Sure, he was full of himself and a total jerk, but there seemed to be something deeper within Cye and Issac’s reaction to each other. I pushed the thought away, telling myself that it was just anxiety from the trip overflowing. The trip! I had just remembered that we were on the hovercar. The question that caused Issac and Cye to argue flashed back in my head. Where are we going?
As if my question was answered, the hovercar landed and all conversations went dead silent as the lady on the nanophone cleared her throat. “Children, welcome to facility SPS-34.”
