Prologue

No one knows what happened that day except the Elders, the leaders of our society. They describe it as brutal, morbid. They say it was the day the sky rained death, bodies dropping from planes above. They say that the United States, a once great force, was terminated that day. Destroyed by the enemy. There remained only seven cities still standing, and only 15% of the population remained alive. They call this day The Extinction. And it was The Extinction that led to The Beginning.

The Beginning consisted of the rebuilding of the seven cities that were left. But because these cities were so spread out, there could not be one central power. So they split, each taking on a Utopian government. They aimed to create the perfect little worlds. These cities became known as Societies, and their people were Citizens. The leaders of these Societies were the Elders, who were the people that experienced The Extinction. When an Elder dies, a new one is appointed and informed about every little detail of The Extinction, most of which is hidden from the rest of the community. Beneath the leaders are the Officers. They are the enforcers of the law, the most feared among the citizens. And then come the Citizens themselves. Each citizen has a certain meal plan, exercise routine, etc. specifically tailored to keep them in the best shape possible. Or as best of shape as the Society wants them. Citizens live in identical houses, and each is assigned a specific job and moves into their own home at the age of 16. Until then, they live in the Children's Center, a large facility tailored to teaching children how to obey and do their duty in Society. Children never know their parents, as they are taken at birth.

Things were running smoothly in these Societies for a while. Everyone was content and safe. However, there was still one issue left before these Societies could be perfect. Heartbreak. Depression. And at the root of it all: love. The ability to care about something or someone. So what is the solution? A vaccine that shuts down the part of the brain that can love or care. It leaves the victim the perfect, soulless soldier of the Society. This is what sparked anger. This is what sparked the Rebellion.

Chapter 1

My day started as usual. A pre-set alarm woke me up at exactly 7:00 am. I dressed in the same pure white uniform as I had the day before, and the day before that. I ate a breakfast specifically tailored to my nutritional needs, and I showered within my allotted time. I put my hair up into the standard ponytail of a female Officer, and I gave myself a quick once over in the mirror to check that everything was up to code. After approving of my appearance, I proceeded outside. This routine has been my morning for the past 2 years.

The house in which I lived was slightly larger and more elaborate than that of a normal citizen, but it was still minimally decorated and colored. I lived in the community sectioned off for Officers. It was protected by a huge barbed wire electric fence. You see, we Officers are not the most liked people in Society, but we are some of the most important. I strolled to the small white building near the gate's entrance/exit and approached the window. I faced the person behind the window, nodding a small greeting. "Assignments, Ms. Emma?" she asked, her fingers quickly going to work on a keyboard. "Yes please," I responded. It wasn't long before she had printed a sheet of assignments and handed it to me. "Oh my, you seem to have the night shift. I wish you the best of luck, Ms. Emma." I nodded again, then turned away and walked to the exit. A glance down at my assignment sheet revealed that I did indeed have the night shift. Such an assignment would not be bad if it had not been for the kidnappings recently. I had heard many rumors as to the culprits, but the most practical is the Rebels. They come in and kidnap Citizens and take them away. I could only imagine the terrible things they must do. Torture. Execution. The Rebels were a thing to be feared, and the Society was on high alert for any suspects.

Instead of harping on one assignment, I decided to focus on the others. Though they were small, they were necessary. I spent the first half of my day writing criminal reports for the group of teenagers that my squad had recently arrested for dangerous activity. The rest of my day was saved for punishing prisoners. Many of the Citizens feared our punishments, and they had a right to. Part of my training as an Officer meant that I had to be put through every punishment method, and there was not a single one that left me without a mark. Eventually 9:00 pm rolled around, and the horn was blown for the Officers to return home. Well, all except myself and four others who were stuck on night patrol. We left the Officer Headquarters just as the city lights were shut off. The world was dark, save the weak, orange glow of the occasional streetlight. The four of us determined stations around the city, then headed our separate ways. Soon, we were all alone in the eerie night. It was us against whatever hid among the darkness.

Chapter 2

The first few hours of my shift went without much excitement. Well, no excitement really. The only noise had been a squirrel rummaging through a dumpster, which took a simple stomp of my foot to scare away. Though I eventually regretted scaring the poor creature after I realized he was the only one besides me in this area of the city. Silence again settled, leaving me with a small pang of loneliness.

My shift continued like this for a while before I got the slightest bit of action. A loud thump sounded from just outside the huge wall surrounding the city, designed to keep unwanted things out. The noise was followed by a hushed, but angry, voice chastising someone with, "You idiot. They'll hear us!" I tensed my finger on the trigger of my gun, raising it to aim in the vicinity of the voice. After another moment, the top of a head poked up. That was all I needed to fire. The shot rang loud in the night.

"What did I tell you!" the voice yelled again, not bothering to hide anymore.

"Would you just chill out, Charlie? Get the job done and you can lecture me later!"

I aimed again at the spot where the head had popped up. My gun rested there, my finger itching to fire. The head appeared again, earning another shot from myself. It then moved down the wall a bit, which I again fired. Little to my knowledge, the second intruder has gone the opposite way. While I was distracted with the pesky intruder that I couldn't seem to hit, the second snuck over the opposite side of the wall. He crept stealthily up behind me, and as I was about to take a final shot at the first intruder, his large arm wrapped around my chest, one hand holding a cloth to my face. My instincts ignited, and I began to kick and squirm, but alas he was far too strong. It wasn't long before my eyes began to droop, and the world turned darker than it had been before.

Chapter 3

My state of conscious was quite odd at this point. One would expect me to be completely unaware of reality, but I wasn't. I could hear the occasional mumble from my captors, and I felt myself being hoisted onto the back of the larger male. I was aware as we traveled quite a long ways, but I never could quite open my eyes and gain control again. It was only after I was roughly tossed onto a stone floor that my body finally woke, allowing my eyes to flash open and take in the sight before me. They had taken me to a cave, and a dark one at that. My hand and ankles were firmly bound, so any hasty escape was out of the question. Finally my eyes landed upon my captors: a medium-sized girl with fiery red hair, and a large guy with dark brown hair.

"Oh look, she's awake," the girl said, walking forward. I held her gaze as she approached, but I could not hide my shock as she slapped me across the face. "That's for shooting at me," she stated, a victorious smirk plastered on her face.

"Give her a break Charlie," the male said, grabbing the girl's wrist.

"Whatever Lucas. I'll just let Kody deal with her. You know how he loves dealing with Officers," she said, flashing a grin in my direction. And with that, the two left me. Which may have been a mistake.

As soon as their footprints went silent, I began to wiggle my wrists. The ropes were bound quite tightly, so I only managed a small bit of loosening before more footsteps approached. This time, it was a single set. I stopped squirming as a shadow appeared, and a few moments later there was the silhouette of a tall boy standing in the entrance to the cave.

"Emma, right?" he said, leaning against the wall of the cave. He appeared to be holding a paper, which I could only assume was my assignment sheet that I had on me when I was attacked. Instead of replying, I stayed silent, as I had been trained to do in such a situation.

He looked up from the paper, looking at me. "Quiet one, aren't you?" he said, crumpling the paper and throwing it to the ground. He stepped closer now, allowing me to see his features. He was tall and muscular, with spiked hair of dark brown. He stopped a few feet away, his eyes never leaving my own. We were taught in Officer training that this was a popular interrogation technique. The interrogator stares into the eyes of the victim to show dominance, and ultimately to get the victim to surrender. But the only issue was that I was no pushover.

"You're not going to make this easy on yourself, Emma," he said, walking closer and squatting in front of me so that he was even with my eye level. "So, here's how this is gonna go. You're going to tell me whatever I need to know about the Society. And don't try to act dumb either. We've done enough research on you to know that you can give us all the information we need," he said, leaning in a bit at the last part.

I held eye contact, keeping up my silence. My face was plastered with a hardened expression as I looked at him. He gave me the same twisted smile that the girl, Charlie, had given me earlier. "Ok then, you wanna do this the hard way. Gladly..."

Chapter 4

The techniques of the Rebels were barbaric compared to those of the Society. While we had electric generators that could power enough electricity to fry a person, all they had were knives, rocks, and their own bare hands. Though I will say this: I would have much rather endured the electricity.

The pure brutality with which I was cut and hit was terrifying. But of course, I kept up my silence for as long as possible, until a particular blow to my side was enough to get a grunt from me.

"I could do this all day, you know," Kody said, striking me in my abdomen. He, too, maintained a straight face, but there was a bit more beneath his emerald green eyes. Of course, I did not have the chance to study them for long before I was punched again in my abdomen. I took a bit more of these punches before he stopped, studying me.

I had been taken into a cave that seemed isolated from the rest. It was dark, with a single light hanging above the victim's head, who at this moment was me. My black hair hung down my back as I took the break in the punching to regain my breath and rebuild my composure. I straightened, locking eyes with Kody, which earned me a smirk from him.

"Don't you ever get tired of acting, Emma? I mean, the Society hasn't come for you yet. And you and I both know that if they really wanted to find you, they would of by now," he said, watching for my response.

What he said was true. The Society had the technology and manpower to track me down and rescue me within a single hour, and yet I had been here for about 8 now.

"Ugh, come on," he sighed, seemingly exasperated. He shook his head at me before leaving the cave. Which was, again, a mistake. I wrenched my aching hands in the ropes. It took a bit longer than I would have liked, but eventually the binding slipped from my wrists, freeing me to untie my ankles. In a second I was up and running from the cave. I didn't bother with sneaking or evading eyes, because there were none. The sky was black, with a full moon in the distance. Everyone was inside their respective caves in a deep slumber, whilst I left the Rebel camp and began my trek across a desolate shrub land towards the silhouette of the Society in the distance.

The trek took me all night plus a bit of the morning, but I eventually reached the front gates of the Society. The guards immediately pointed their guns my way, but it didn't take them long to realize my identity. I was greeted with a swarm of Officers, many of them radioing for a medical team while the others coaxed me into the safety of the gates. I gratefully followed. They stayed with me until the medical team arrived. I had a few bruises and cuts, but nothing too major. After a quick dose of IV fluids and some basic care for my cuts, I was transported to the Officer Headquarters. I was again greeted with surprised faces and the occasional "Welcome back!" "Are you okay?" "What happened?" I wanted to tell them all of the horrors that I witnessed, but I was being swept along by a group of high-ranking Officers towards the elevator. Once the doors closed, it was once again silent, save the minuscule buzz as the elevator rose. We stopped at the seventh floor, the top floor of the building. The Officer HQ building was odd indeed. Floors 1 and 2 were both below the ground: Floor 1 for the prisoners and Floor 2 for the interrogation and medical rooms where the famed emotion-eliminating injection was given. Floor 3 was ground level, the reception floor. Then Floors 4, 5, and 6 were the all-purpose floors. Floor 7 was special. It held the Commander, the top ranking Officer and a member of the Elder council which led our Society.

It was Floor 7 that greeted me when the doors to the elevators opened. The Officers pushed me forward, staying inside the elevator as it closed and descended once more. I was left to face the back of a particularly large chair, which swiveled around once the elevator had shut. Facing me now was the Commander, a woman in her mid-50's. Her face and hands held scars from her days as a normal Officer. Her eyes were strong, intimidating. I stood at attention, awaiting her words.

"Ah, Emma. I've been waiting for you. I am terribly sorry that we did not recover you from Rebel grasps. We had a situation here that needed to be dealt with," she said, gesturing for me to sit.

I followed her gesture, sitting in a leather chair across from her. That makes sense, I guess. The Society is more important than a single life. It was a simple concept that we had always been taught.

"So, I called you in here for a reason. You have been inside of the Reel camp. You walked back, so you know there location," she said, pausing. "We're going to need everything that you know about the Rebels." At this she clicked a button on a voice recorder, then looked at me to begin.

So I did.
