Summary/Blurb
Everyone thinks that World War III has started with China as the cause. In 2049, China landed on the Kyushu and Shikoku Districts, gaining control easily while pushing the Japanese Military back to Chugoku. The Japanese Government is reassuring the citizens that they are keeping China at bay, but once a group of rebellious teens decide to take a peek on what's going on, respect for their country's government is almost snatched away and pounded into the ashes of the fallen cities.

The Style of Liberate + Some info
      - It is mostly based on action with romance(not very mushy, I consider it a little cute ;3)
      - The chapters might seem like episodes, and I'm using an anime-type style of writing, though it may vary a little.
      - If you are planning to read, I recommend that you read the prologue if you usually don't, since it's kind of a info bomb to fill you guys in on what exactly is happening in the world(don't worry it'll be more exciting in the actual story)
      - I would love it if you readers could leave a comment/critique ;v;
      - I'll probably add some stuff up here as the story goes on, like character profiles and such
      - Oh, here's an amazing book by another person, I was mostly inspired to actually start my idea because of this
      - I hope you guys enjoy :3

prologue

    {{ Public Information // Latest News // January 2051 }}
Supposedly, World War III had begun in 2042 when China made their first move to world domination. The USA began to suspect China of creating weapons in 2021, warning the rest of the world of the threat that China could be.

As soon as the news reached Japan, the government commenced ‘Project Aegis: The Barricades.’ This was the construction of walls that would surround the main cities of Japan. The Barricades were also built on the borders between the Districts as well as the shoreline. Project Aegis took 20 years to complete, and in those years China had not made a move to suggest anything. In those years the world began to relax and forget about the hunch about China creating weapons.

Project Aegis was completed in 2041 and one year later China advanced into Mongolia, using their advantage of surprise to the fullest. It was extremely easy for them to take Mongolia, that’s why they had invaded South East Asia almost immediately after they colonized Mongolia.

The few countries that tried to be neutral failed miserably, as China’s Military force proved to be ruthless and Thailand was colonized for the first time. The Chinese gained control over South East Asia by 2044, then invaded Korea. South Korea was considerably easy since they had surrendered. North Korea was more difficult, though they successfully brought it under control with a well thought out Blitzkrieg by early 2047.

The world was in havoc. Every country seemed to be frantically prepping their Military Forces, especially the countries bordering China. The USA seemed to watch from a distance, as if the memories from WWII held them back. The atom bomb. The devastated country of Japan. China took the Himalayas next, colonizing them by 2048.

In 2049, China landed on the shores of the Kyushu and Shikoku Districts, easily gaining control since both were isolated from the mainland. While doing so, they had pushed Japan back to the Chugoku Barricade. Early 2050, China pressed on to the Kansai Barricade.

Mid 2050, the Japanese government announced to the citizens that they were keeping a firm hold on China at the Kansai Barricade.
Information containing further events about the war came to a halt by late 2050, the only announcement was that they were keeping China at bay behind the Kansai Barricade.

chapter 1: two rebellious 2nd years

“I swear it Arashi, I will eat your face if you pull a stupid prank on me again.” A girl draped with multi-colored streamers fumed at a black-haired boy laughing to himself.

“That doesn’t even make sense Futeki!” Arashi continued to snicker. He had placed a fake present on Futeki’s desk and left a letter that said ‘from your secret admirer’ on top. As soon as Futeki opened it, streamers burst from the box, which caused her to jerk back in surprise.

Still furious at Arashi, Futeki lowered her head and smiled devilishly. “You bastard...”
Suddenly sensing her change in attitude, Arashi stopped laughing immediately while his brown eyes dilated. “H-hey, Suishou-chan, it was just a joke. C’mon, calm down okay?” Arashi stuttered nervously, pupils darting around, searching for an escape route.

“Bastard! Stupid pig!” With that, Futeki took a swing at Arashi, green eyes crackling with fury as her fist met with Arashi’s cheek. Falling to the ground, their classmates stared in shock mixed with amusement, as if this kind of thing happened everyday.

A brown haired boy walked into the classroom with two hands in his pockets, halting at the scene in front of him. Arashi had stood back up and was throwing insults at Futeki while she shot them right back. “Fish idiot!” “Pig crap!” “Horse crap!” “Butt nugget!” “Sensei boogers!”

“Arashi Hansuke! Futeki Suishou! Be quiet!” The quarreling pair stopped as soon as the booming voice of their homeroom teacher reached their ears. Arashi and Futeki lowered themselves into their chairs, Futeki picking the streamers off her body. The brown haired boy sat down as well, still eyeing his two friends. “Your insults didn’t make any sense whatsoever.” He whispered mockingly to the duo.

“What did you say?!” Both of them slammed their hands on the surface of their desks in response to his comment.

“Didn’t I tell you two idiots to be quiet already?!” The teacher sighed and adjusted his glasses. “Anyway, class. We have a transfer student joining us today from Osaka.” A girl with light blue hair entered the classroom wearing a neutral expression. Her eyes were grey with ice blue flecks. “Please introduce yourself.” Sensei told the girl. Nodding slightly in acknowledgement, she turned to face the class. “My name is Kiwako Toukai. Thank you for having me.”

Whispers erupted from all of the students in the classroom. “Hey, she’s cute.” “I really want to be friends with her!” “Should I hit on her?” “No seriously I have a crush now.” “She’s going to be a problem.” The teacher cleared his throat to silence the class. “Why don’t you take a seat next to Futeki?” He pointed to the black haired girl who was in the back row, one desk away from the window. Kiwako nodded and started for the empty desk, unfazed by the stares of her new classmates.

As she approached her assigned desk, Arashi leaned over and whispered in Futeki’s ear. “Make sure you don’t scare her away with your face.”

Elbowing Arashi in the gut, Futeki smiled at Kiwako as she settled down in the desk next to the window. “Hi, I’m Futeki Suishou and this idiot here is Arashi Hansuke.” Arashi shot Kiwako a wide grin as Futeki continued. “The brown haired boy next to Arashi is Itsuki Kaminari, real cute that one. He’s the guy who breaks all of the girls’ hearts.”

Snickering, Arashi nudged Itsuki with his elbow. “How’s that Mr. Heartbreaker?” He added.
“I hope you two aren’t filling her head with nonsense.” Sensei glared at Futeki and Arashi, a subtle way of telling them to shut up.

“Don’t worry Daichi-kun, you can trust us with new students.” Arashi replied with a humongous grin slapped on his face. Frowning, the teacher adjusted his glasses and shot Arashi a ice-cold stare. “Hansuke-san, first of all, you will refer to your teacher as Choukichi-sensei. Never again will you address me by my first name.” Exhaling slowly to calm down, Choukichi-sensei continued. “Moving on. I’ll be taking attendance now.”

As sensei called out names, Futeki returned her attention back to Kiwako. “Toukai-chan, why did you move to Kyoto?” Kiwako gazed at Futeki for a while before answering her question, wondering whether it’d be a good idea to tell the truth to the girl she just met. The obvious choice was no. “My father’s job.”

“Oh I see.” Futeki seemed to sense something was off with Kiwako’s answer, but she didn’t push since it wasn’t really her interest to know. “Since you missed the opening ceremony, do you have any questions about the school?”

Kiwako barely heard her, she kept staring out the window thinking about the war. Blinking once at the sound of Futeki’s voice, she once again met her green eyes. “No, not much.” The short, clipped reply was enough to hint at Kiwako’s unwillingness to speak, and Futeki respected that. “Alright.”
---

Soon enough, after mathematics and english, the lunch bell rang. Their english teacher collected his papers and exited the classroom as a few students rushed out, Arashi was one of them. Most of the class seemed to have brought their own boxed lunches, including Futeki and Itsuki.

While opening her bento, Kiwako noticed Futeki turning to try and start a conversation once again. “Oh, you have a bento as well? That’s good. Just incase you don’t have a bento, there’s a cafe downstairs where you can get lunch too. Though I recommend you don’t because it’s basically a war zone down there.”

Kiwako stared at her, searching for anything that was related to the war with China. She had just said ‘war zone’ and how could anyone not think of the war going on right now? Exhaling silently, she nodded in thanks while turning back to unpacking her bento, beginning to eat the fried chicken.

Futeki frowned and opened her mouth to speak until a group of girls approached Kiwako. “Hey! You there!” Shouted the leading girl.

Lowering her chopsticks, Kiwako shifted to face the girls. They all looked very snobbish, but it was obvious that they were trying to intimidate her. “We have some rules around here!” She continued, “and one of them is that Itsuki-kun is off limits! You get that?! We all share him!”

The brown haired boy called Itsuki stood up and seemed to inspect the group of girls, then he spoke. “Kiwako, can you come with me?”

The lot of girls gasped, “y-you called her by her first name?!” Then they glowered at Kiwako seething with jealousy, waiting for her to follow Itsuki. Futeki was wide eyed, pupils darting from Itsuki to the girls to Kiwako.

After a few moments, Kiwako responded with a blunt tone. “No thanks. And please don’t call me by my first name, I hate it when people do that without knowing anything about me.” The group of girls gasped again. “H-how could you turn down an invitation from Itsuki-kun?!” Exclaimed the leading girl.

Annoyed, Kiwako stood up with both hands on her desk, swiveling her head to glare at her. “I thought you wanted me to stay away from him. Now you want me to accept his stupid invitation? If you want to stand around and waste my time by contradicting yourself then I suggest you find a new hobby.”

Even though all of them were obviously intimidated, still they clung on to the pride they had left. “F-fine! Be that way! But know yo-”

The lead girl was interrupted by Itsuki as he grabbed her wrist. “That’s enough.” He whispered softly into her ear, then faced Kiwako. “That was an order, not an invitation.” Then he leaned in until their eyes were a centimeter apart. “I need to ask you something. Please come.”

Something glinted in his eyes, and for some reason she knew immediately that they shared something in common. “I’ll come with you.” She replied and he pulled away, letting go of the girl’s wrist who had melted to the ground in happiness. Her friends were trying to rouse her.

Futeki’s face began to crumple with dread as Kiwako accepted, then leaned over to whisper in her ear. “Whatever happens, don’t hesitate to beat the crap out of him. I pray for your safety.” Futeki then slapped her hands together in an exaggerated gesture. “Good luck!”

Kiwako stared at her new friend strangely before following Itsuki out the door, about to close it until Arashi burst through. “Futeki! Check it out! I managed to grab two melon buns, four chocolate buns, and even a hotdog...” His voice faded in the background as she pulled the door closed again, then walked down the hallway after Itsuki.

Itsuki opened the door to the roof, a chilly breeze greeting them under the cloudy sky. Kiwako stepped out and stayed in front of the entrance subconsciously. She watched Itsuki as he walked forward, stopping in the middle while raising his head to gaze at the clouds. Then he spoke. “You doubt the reports don’t you? You doubt our government don’t you?”

Kiwako’s eyes dilated in shock at the sudden question, but that only lasted a second before replying, “I do. And I sure as hell want to get up that damned wall to see what’s going on.”

Itsuki rotated to face her. “Remember when the barricades were open for civilians in 2041? Remember when they were made off-limits for the Kyushu, Shikoku and Chugoku districts in 2049? Remember when the walls were closed off for the Kansai District, our district, in late 2050? How the only announcement after that was just that they were holding off China at the Kansai Barricade? It was even made illegal for any civilian to go up the wall.”

Kiwako nodded and began to edge closer. “I remember. I remember everything.” Finally someone who thought like her. “I’ve been wondering for a while now, whether or not the government has been telling the truth.”

Raising one eyebrow, Itsuki put most of his weight on one leg as he replied with a sarcastic tone. “You think?”
“Shut up, I just wanted to see if we were on the same page.” She retorted, glaring at him.

“Whatever, at least someone has been smart enough to doubt the government.” He commented, glancing at her before gazing in the direction of the city’s barricade, the Kyoto Barricade. Then he returned his blue optics to hers. “I think that Japan’s Military isn’t keeping China at the Kansai Barricade. You’ve noticed the random booming sounds right? The government says that their doing construction outside the Barricades, but it sounds more like bombs.”

“You think?” Kiwako mimicked Itsuki, but then continued with a more serious tone. “I agree. Do you think that maybe China’s reached Himeji?”
“Maybe, maybe not. Who knows when the government is obviously spreading lies everywhere?”

There was a long pause after Itsuki’s reply, as if he was thinking deep and hard about something, but his relaxed expression revealed nothing. Kiwako examined Itsuki for a little longer before turning her head to stare at the grey mass in the distance called the Kyoto Barricade. Her entire being yearned to climb up the dull wall that separated them from reality, it felt like she wouldn’t be able to live much longer without seeing the outside world with her own eyes.

“You want to get up the wall right?” Itsuki inquired, breaking the silence.
    “Of course I do.”
“Then let’s get up the wall.”
