Part Seven

Sparkle again woke me up the next morning. I was barely conscious when she told me that my training outfit was in my closet, and breakfast was being served. I nod, hoping she would leave. After she did, I pull myself out of bed and get into the shower. Afterwards, I slip into the training suit and braid my blonde hair into a long braid.

Once I have made myself look somewhat presentable, I head down to breakfast. Hex meets me in the hallway and we walk to the dining room. I sneak a glance at him and then look straight forward. We are in matching training outfits, great. This was probably Dick's idea. I look back at Hex and see small bags under his eyes. I feel concern rise in my chest.

"Did you sleep last night?" I ask, keeping the worry out of my voice. Hex looks at me, his brown eyes were tired. He tries to hide how tired he looks. "Yeah..did you?" He asks, looking into my eyes and then quickly looking away. "Yes." I answer, looking back at the ground.

Breakfast passes all too quickly, and Dick is taking us to the elevator. On the way down, he asks, "Okay...so do we have any skills?" I look at the elevator door, refusing myself to look at Hex. "Uh...I am good at...hand-to-hand?" Hex says hesitantly. Dick smiles. "Good! We can work with that. What about you Rosie?"

Rosie? Really? Okay Dick...two can play at that game. "Sarcasm...." I say, turning to look at him. "D" I say it was such force I surprise myself. Dick stares right back at me. It is turning into a stare-off when the doors open. "Have fun. Play nice." Dick says, looking away. Ha! I won.

Hex and I slowly walk out of the elevator and saw the Training Center. "Well this should be fun...." Hex says. At first, I was wondering why he said that when I notice we have suddenly become the center of attention. At least ten tributes were glaring at us. I swallow and smile brightly, as if nothing was wrong. "Kinda like the first day of school." I say to Hex. He smiles and looks at me, and I smile back.

The trainers call us to the center and a lady gets up in the center of the circle the trainers have put us in. She starts listing off the rules and warnings. Halfway through, I realize someone is staring at me. I casually scan the tributes till I find the tribute. It is the boy from District One, he is giving me a look that scared me and angered me. I look back at the woman as she finishes.

Hex walks over to me. "Hey...I was wondering....if you might want to...like...well...train...with me?" He asks, his cheeks turning red. I want to say yes. I would love to say yes. But we can not do this, I can not do this. If I have to kill him.... "What if we train separately and pick out the tributes that are the most dangerous?" I suggest.

Hex nods in agreement. "You are right. Okay...see you later!" He says with a smile, and heads off towards the spear and bow area. The girl and boy from District Seven starts up a conversation with him and I know he will be alright. I decide to head to the plants stand, the boy from District Twelve is there and I attempt at a greeting.

Cole is his name, and he is eighteen. We teach each other some things at the plants stand and at the end, I ask, "Ally?" He looks at me, into my eyes. He studies me for a few seconds, then nods. "Ally." I smile and stand. Casually, I head to the climbing nets. Only because ever since I have seen them I have been itching to try them.

The girl from District 10 and the boy from 9 are there. I walk up to the most difficult net, and they stop talking and watch me. I smile at them and then look up at the net. I grab the smooth black rope with my hand and then hook my foot in the first hole, starting to climb. It is a little slow at first, but then I speed up. Closing my eyes, I imagine that I am in District 11, in the trees.

Suddenly I hear someone gasp and my hand touches something cool, and metal. I open my eyes and look at the thing I have run into. That thing, is the roof of the training center. The gasp, was from the girl down below. Because, I have reached the top of the climbing net.

Eyes wide, I look down, that was a long drop. I guess the Gamemakers have thought about this, because there is a net to catch anyone that falls. I start to climb back down but then realize I can not. Now I know why it was called the difficult climbing net, because it is nearly impossible to get back down.

"Autumn...how did you get up there?" Hex asks from far below. I look down and realize, for the second time that day, that I am the center of attention. Even the Gamemakers are looking at me. "I uh...." I say, swallowing. Hex looks impressed, as does the girl from 10 and the boy from 9. The girls from 7 and 12 have walked over as well. "Climbed." I answer cooly.

I can not look weak. I am in front of possible allies and the Careers. Taking a deep breath, I look backwards and slowly plan my way down. After I have been through my plan several times, I put it into action. This is my time to show what I can do, in front of all the tributes, before the arena. I slip my feet out of their hold. Closing my eyes, I take another deep breath.

I let go of the net. Screams come from below as I start to fall. I snap my eyes open and grab the bottom of the net. Then, like I did back home, I swing from hole to hole, grabbing each and making my way down. There is a small breeze in my face as I feel like a monkey, swinging from net hole to net hole.

When I reach the ground, there is silence. I stood on the ground and clear my throat. I smile shyly at the Careers, which drives them insane. The Gamemakers nod at me and turn back to the other tributes. Thankfully, everyone has gone back to what they were doing before I had seized everyone's attention.

By the end of the day, I am sore, hungry and tired. But we have Districts 7, 9, 10 and 12 on our side. The Careers have made themselves clear as the tributes from 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and then 6 and 8 have made their own little group. So when we get in the arena, it is going to be three groups against each other.

Who will win though? The outer districts usually do not make allies together, but Hex and I have made it so. When we get in the elevator to go back to our apartment, Dick quizzes us on what happened. I let Hex tell Dick the story because I am too tired.

Hex is on the part where I made it down the net when we reach the apartment. The doors open and I immediately head to my room. I take another shower and collapse on my bed. I have never been so sore in my life. Well, except for when I fell off of our roof back at District 11. I think about eating dinner but the bed is so...comfortable.

I close my eyes and fall asleep, feeling somewhat prepared for the arena..

Part Eight

If you ask me, the training went by way too fast. I guess that is the only thing I am thinking as Hex and I sit, waiting for our turn with the Gamemakers. I have no clue what I am going to do. I look at Hex, who looks about as nervous as me. "You know what you are going to do yet?" I ask curiously.

Hex shrugs and looks at me. "I thought I would light my hair on fire and dance around naked." he says casually. I can not help, I burst into giggles. The tributes from District 12 snicker as well. Hex smiles as if he has already won the Hunger Games. "We are supposed to make a mark are we not?!" He says incredulously.

This just sends the three of us tributes into laughter. I finally calm myself down enough to stop laughing. "Hex Oakwood." the robotic voice says and that silences us. "Well...wish me luck!" He says with a smile my way and then walks confidently to the gate. It opens, letting him in, and then closes behind him.

I look at my hands and suddenly realize that was the first time I have laughed since the Reaping. Then I wonder if Hex did it on purpose. I smile at the thought and shake my head. Then I turn my thinking back to what I am going to do. Ten minutes have passed and I still have no idea. "Autumn Rose." comes over the speakers and I sigh.

Standing, I walk to the gate and watch as it opens. I step into the room I had spent everyday of the past week in. The sound of the gate closing behind me reminds me of a trap. I take a deep breath and look around the room. My eyes stop last on the Gamemakers. They are studying me, not one is looking away. Which surprises me. I thought for sure they would be intoxicated by now.

I start at the knives area, seeing as I did pretty good at them. I only miss one target, but it still ended in the target's arm. I move on to the spears and throw three. I hit two of them in the chest and the last one in the neck.

Finally, I move to the climbing net. I take a deep breath before I scramble up the first one. It is so easy coming back down I try not too smirk. I skip the next one and go right to the hardest one. I repeat what I did the first day, and then finish. I exit the training center, praying and hoping I get a good score but not too good.

Hex and I make it back to our apartment and I immediately head to my room. I take a shower and then change into black pants and a green shirt. I slowly walk to my bed and am shocked to find my locket on the table next to my bed. I snatch it up and hold it close to my chest. Memories sneak back into my mind.

I sit there, letting them come back, letting them take over my brain. Then the realization sinks in. I am never going to see Thorn or Colt again. I am never going home. Tears fill my eyes and I do not stop them. I hug my knees and bury my face in my knees.

I hear someone knock but I do not answer. Someone sits next to me on the bed and I look up. Hex looks back at me. "Are you okay?" he asks softly. I want to say yes and wipe away my tears. But Hex's concerned eyes makes me look down. "No." I admit.

Hex immediately wraps his arms around me. I do not argue or fight. I let him hold me as I let the memories go. I don't know how long we sit there. When Dick comes in, Hex gives me a small heads up by whispering, "D." I quickly wipe away my tears and straighen up.

Dick walks in and examines the scene before him. I look back at him, almost daring him to say something. He looks into my eyes and then looks at Hex. "The scores are coming up." Is all he says and then walks out.

I blush when I realize Hex has his arms around me. He clears his throat and quickly removes them. "Guess we better go huh?" He says, smiling his lopsided smile. It's contagious and I smile back. "Yeah." So we both stand and walk into the living room. Sparkle sees my face but does not say anything.

Hex and I sit down on the only open space on the couch and then watch as Ahri turns on the tv, which is actually a screen that shows up on a pillar across from us. Anxiety starts to build in the room as Caesar starts saying the scores of each tribute. All the Careers get from 9-11, no lower and none got a 12.

I do not even realize I am biting my nails when Ahri reaches over and takes my hand in his. "From District Eleven! Hex Oakwood, with a score of..." I think we are all holding our breath. "Nine." Hex looks shocked. "What did you do?!" I declare. He looks at me and he has a mischievous look on his face. "What I said I would do." He says smoothly.

I giggle and everyone congratulates him. It quickly gets quiet when Caesar says, "Autumn Rose, with a score of..." I hold my breath, staring at the screen. "Ten!" District Twelve is completely forgotten about in the small living room.

Sparkle is nearly freaking out and Ahri and Candy are applauding. Dick has a smirk on his face and Hex is smiling at me. "You became a little monkey didn't you?" He says, grinning. I blush and nod. "Oh let's go eat!" Sparkle says and we all migrate to the dining room. "A toast!" Ahri holds up his glass when we all settle down at the table.

"To Autumn and Hex! The Tributes from District Eleven!"

Part Nine

Ahri has my prep team come and prep me early. As in early in the morning. They are super excited to see me. It is hard not too be bubbly around three people that are like children when they get candy. Pinky is muttering something about my hair while Claudius and Feather were preparing to wax my legs again. I just close my eyes and let someone else worry about me for a while.

Once my prep team was done with me, Ahri came to dress me for the interview. "Are you nervous?" he asks as he walks in with a black dress bag. "Nervous is an understatement." I say, trying not too bite my nails. Ahri sets the bag down on a chair and walks over to me. "You will do fine. Just do not trip." he says teasingly.

I roll my eyes. "Ahri! You are not helping...." I say, tugging at the edge of my blue cover gown. I have never felt so nervous in my life than in this moment right now. Ahri takes a deep breath and looks me in the eye. "Autumn.....I know you...you will do fine." he says in a reassuring tone.

Looking into his vivid blue eyes, I believe him. "Now...do you want to see your dress?" Ahri says with a sparkle in his eye. I smile weakly and nod. He takes my hand and leads me down to the large dress bag. He motions for me to unzip it and I take a deep breath.

My numb fingers manage to unzip the large bag and I see lots of pink, orange, yellow and fluff. They are not vibrant colors but soft colors, kind of like a sunset. That is all Ahri lets me see. He zips the bag back up and spins his finger. "Turn around and close your eyes." he commands.

I turn around and close my eyes, a smile on my lips. I slip off my blue paper gown and I feel something cool and silky fall over my head. I am surprised at how short it is. The dress stops just above my knees, and I can feel something almost netty feeling against my legs.

"Alright....you can open your eyes." Ahri says and I quickly open my eyes. A small gasp escapes my lips as I stare at the stranger in the mirror. The top part of the dress is a light pink, except for the netty, silky strap that goes around my neck and the strip covering my breasts. That is a light yellow. The pink part is almost suctioned to my body down to just below my waist, then the soft orange begins and it flows out and curves to the side.

It almost looks like petals, which I am sure is what Ahri meant for it to look like. "Ahri it looks beautiful." I say, my voice shaky and hoarse. Ahri smiles and sets to work on my makeup and hair. The make up is pretty basic and neutral but Ahri still manages to make me look beautiful.

When it comes to my long, blonde hair, Ahri parts my hair into three large sections and then braids them separately. Then he braids all three braids together into one braid. He adds a small apple blossom to the bottom of the braid and studies his work. Ahri turns to the box that was by the chair and hands it to me.

I take it and take off the lid, looking inside. Pulling out a pair of heels, I smile. They are pink and with large orange flowers on the sides. I slip them on and then look at myself in the mirror. Ahri has me turn and looks at his finished product. Satisfied, He smiles and takes my hand.

"It is show time!" Ahri says, his eyes sparkling with excitement. He walks me as far as he can go and then disappears with my prep team to find their seats. I stand behind the boy from District 10, waiting. I feel as if everyone is staring at me, maybe it is just because I am nervous.

"Wow." Hex's voice once again startles me. I turn around to see him standing behind me, looking....stunned. "Hi." I say shyly. A smile decorates his handsome face. "Hi." he says, looking at my dress, my hair and then my face. I can feel my cheeks heat up as he looks at me.

Hex looks pretty 'wow' too. Candy dressed him in a black suit with orange, yellow and pink highlights here and there. In his lapel, he has a large orange flower that matches my shoes and dress. I look him over and then look back up at his eyes.

He smiles at me and I blush again. "So I guess we are the flower people now?" he says and I giggle. His eyes sparkle and we both turn our attention to the tv when we hear Caesar Flickerman's theme song. The girl from District 1 is up first and she smiles flirtatiously at the crowd.

I listen closely and find out her name is Jewels. The minutes pass by quickly and so do the interviews. I lost interest in finding out people's names by District 3. But the District 1 boy who kept staring at me, his name is Rigby.

My heart is pounding. There is only one more person between me and the stage. When he gets taken away, I feel like panicking. Hex reaches up, takes my hand and squeezes it. Then he releases it as the man comes down to take me away. I look back at Hex as I walk up the stairs. Then I look back forward.

It is dark at first, then warm, orange lights start to peek through. The man moves me to just off the stage, behind a curtain. He tells me when Caesar says my name, to walk out onto the upper step and walk along to the top platform. I nod, trying to remember everything he just said.

I do not dare peek out. I know I will get stage fright. I remember Ahri's words and repeat them over and over in my head. "Now...our next tribute....is one who radiates of grace, love and color! You all remember her from the parade. You remember the kiss?" The crowd roars loudly. I feel sick.

Caesar laughs and says, "Let's give a warm welcome to Autumn Rose!"
