Part Seven
Sparkle again woke me up the next morning. I was barely conscious when she told me that my training outfit was in my closet, and breakfast was being served. I nod, hoping she would leave. After she did, I pull myself out of bed and get into the shower. Afterwards, I slip into the training suit and braid my blonde hair into a long braid.
Once I have made myself look somewhat presentable, I head down to breakfast. Hex meets me in the hallway and we walk to the dining room. I sneak a glance at him and then look straight forward. We are in matching training outfits, great. This was probably Dick's idea. I look back at Hex and see small bags under his eyes. I feel concern rise in my chest.
"Did you sleep last night?" I ask, keeping the worry out of my voice. Hex looks at me, his brown eyes were tired. He tries to hide how tired he looks. "Yeah..did you?" He asks, looking into my eyes and then quickly looking away. "Yes." I answer, looking back at the ground.
Breakfast passes all too quickly, and Dick is taking us to the elevator. On the way down, he asks, "Okay...so do we have any skills?" I look at the elevator door, refusing myself to look at Hex. "Uh...I am good at...hand-to-hand?" Hex says hesitantly. Dick smiles. "Good! We can work with that. What about you Rosie?"
Rosie? Really? Okay Dick...two can play at that game. "Sarcasm...." I say, turning to look at him. "D" I say it was such force I surprise myself. Dick stares right back at me. It is turning into a stare-off when the doors open. "Have fun. Play nice." Dick says, looking away. Ha! I won.
Hex and I slowly walk out of the elevator and saw the Training Center. "Well this should be fun...." Hex says. At first, I was wondering why he said that when I notice we have suddenly become the center of attention. At least ten tributes were glaring at us. I swallow and smile brightly, as if nothing was wrong. "Kinda like the first day of school." I say to Hex. He smiles and looks at me, and I smile back.
The trainers call us to the center and a lady gets up in the center of the circle the trainers have put us in. She starts listing off the rules and warnings. Halfway through, I realize someone is staring at me. I casually scan the tributes till I find the tribute. It is the boy from District One, he is giving me a look that scared me and angered me. I look back at the woman as she finishes.
Hex walks over to me. "Hey...I was wondering....if you might want to...like...well...train...with me?" He asks, his cheeks turning red. I want to say yes. I would love to say yes. But we can not do this, I can not do this. If I have to kill him.... "What if we train separately and pick out the tributes that are the most dangerous?" I suggest.
Hex nods in agreement. "You are right. Okay...see you later!" He says with a smile, and heads off towards the spear and bow area. The girl and boy from District Seven starts up a conversation with him and I know he will be alright. I decide to head to the plants stand, the boy from District Twelve is there and I attempt at a greeting.
Cole is his name, and he is eighteen. We teach each other some things at the plants stand and at the end, I ask, "Ally?" He looks at me, into my eyes. He studies me for a few seconds, then nods. "Ally." I smile and stand. Casually, I head to the climbing nets. Only because ever since I have seen them I have been itching to try them.
The girl from District 10 and the boy from 9 are there. I walk up to the most difficult net, and they stop talking and watch me. I smile at them and then look up at the net. I grab the smooth black rope with my hand and then hook my foot in the first hole, starting to climb. It is a little slow at first, but then I speed up. Closing my eyes, I imagine that I am in District 11, in the trees.
Suddenly I hear someone gasp and my hand touches something cool, and metal. I open my eyes and look at the thing I have run into. That thing, is the roof of the training center. The gasp, was from the girl down below. Because, I have reached the top of the climbing net.
Eyes wide, I look down, that was a long drop. I guess the Gamemakers have thought about this, because there is a net to catch anyone that falls. I start to climb back down but then realize I can not. Now I know why it was called the difficult climbing net, because it is nearly impossible to get back down.
"Autumn...how did you get up there?" Hex asks from far below. I look down and realize, for the second time that day, that I am the center of attention. Even the Gamemakers are looking at me. "I uh...." I say, swallowing. Hex looks impressed, as does the girl from 10 and the boy from 9. The girls from 7 and 12 have walked over as well. "Climbed." I answer cooly.
I can not look weak. I am in front of possible allies and the Careers. Taking a deep breath, I look backwards and slowly plan my way down. After I have been through my plan several times, I put it into action. This is my time to show what I can do, in front of all the tributes, before the arena. I slip my feet out of their hold. Closing my eyes, I take another deep breath.
I let go of the net. Screams come from below as I start to fall. I snap my eyes open and grab the bottom of the net. Then, like I did back home, I swing from hole to hole, grabbing each and making my way down. There is a small breeze in my face as I feel like a monkey, swinging from net hole to net hole.
When I reach the ground, there is silence. I stood on the ground and clear my throat. I smile shyly at the Careers, which drives them insane. The Gamemakers nod at me and turn back to the other tributes. Thankfully, everyone has gone back to what they were doing before I had seized everyone's attention.
By the end of the day, I am sore, hungry and tired. But we have Districts 7, 9, 10 and 12 on our side. The Careers have made themselves clear as the tributes from 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and then 6 and 8 have made their own little group. So when we get in the arena, it is going to be three groups against each other.
Who will win though? The outer districts usually do not make allies together, but Hex and I have made it so. When we get in the elevator to go back to our apartment, Dick quizzes us on what happened. I let Hex tell Dick the story because I am too tired.
Hex is on the part where I made it down the net when we reach the apartment. The doors open and I immediately head to my room. I take another shower and collapse on my bed. I have never been so sore in my life. Well, except for when I fell off of our roof back at District 11. I think about eating dinner but the bed is so...comfortable.
I close my eyes and fall asleep, feeling somewhat prepared for the arena..
