Wildcat's End, Rise of the Gem

Winter came and went, replaced by the warm and sunny days of greenleaf. However large dark gray storm clouds had rolled in overnight, leaving the following morning one of the more dreary days of greenleaf. As HazeClan began to stir that morning a light rain had already begun to fall, although many found it to be comforting as it helped kill some of the heat. In hopes to beat any possible chance of a heavy downpour, patrols were quickly setup and sent out

Upon taking over as leader, Pantherstar and Starlingflight rarely went out together on patrol or even a stroll anymore. However for some reason today was different and the large fluffy gray and white molly decided to invite her best friend out. "It's been some time since the two of us got out of camp together. Care to join me?" Pantherstar asked, giving the chocolate tabby tom a friendly smile. Starlingflight let out a purr, returning the she-cat’s smile and nodding. He agreed it had been far too long since the two of them had a chance to get out and just talk like they used to. “Of course I’ll join you. What kind of silly question is that?” he chuckled, nudging the she-cat and beginning to make his way towards the clan’s exit. “True… How silly of me to ask.” Pantherstar softly chuckled, following alongside the tom.

Upon leaving camp the duo made their way down towards the lake, not exactly having any where in particular they where going. The two walked for a while in silence, just enjoying the company of one another and coming to a stop near the edge of the forest. Sitting down the two looked out across the lake, watching the light rain fall and cause ripples across the watcher’s surface. “A little rain never hurts no cat…” Pantherstar finally meowed, a playful smirk on her face as she spoke. Starlingflight looked to her, only to burst into laughter and nodded his head. “True. You always seem to have a way of wording things Pantherstar.” he meowed, playfully nudging the she-cat beside him. Pantherstar herself laughed, nodding her head in agreement. Silence once again fell between them as the two listened to the rain hit the lake’s surface. It was never an awkward silence between them, but rather a more comforting one especially since the both of them weren’t very chatty cats to begin with.

Eventually Pantherstar knew the pair best be getting back, knowing hopefully by now some of the patrols would almost be back to camp.”Come on. It’s been nice just being able to sit here together and enjoy the scenery. As much as I’d love to stay out longer, I’m sure the patrols will be wanting to report back to us.” She meowed as she rose to her paws. Starlignflight chuckled, rising to his paws as well. No sooner had the two gotten up did the chocolate tabby suddenly get pushed out of the way, a flash of light temporarily blinded him. A loud crack then rang out as something seemed to hit a nearby tree. Staggering on his paws, Starlingflight looked around and caught sight of a tree ablaze. It dawned on him on what exactly had happened in a matter of seconds. Before him lay a motionless charred body of Pantherstar. She had shoved him out of the way, the lightning strike taking her final life. Another thing of lightning then must have hit the tree to set it ablaze. His eyes grew wide as he watched as one after another trees caught aflame.

Terrified yowls rang out as cats came running towards the chocolate tabby. The patrols. They had been out doing their usual when the forest had caught fire. “Move it!” a voice meowed, pushing Starlingflight in the direction of camp. “We’ll bring her body back! We need to get as many of us to safety as we can!” the voice meowed once more. Starlinglfight still shocked only nodded, glancing out of the corner of his eyes to see Alpinedusk. A few cats pause to pick up Pantherstar’s body before trailing behind the rest, doing their best to keep moving fastly. As the patrol made their way back, they met up with some of the other patrols that had been sent out that day. Cats panicked as they scrambled back towards camp, fear in their eyes as they all were uncertain if they would even make it out alive.

Being so far from camp and so close to where the fire had started, many cats were unable to keep up any longer, falling victim to the flames while others got caught by falling tree branches. Starlingflight helplessly was half dragged along the way as he seemed to lose feeling in his paws from shock. Eventually the rain poured heavily down upon them, the flames seeming to die out as the rain caused the lake’s water to begin to overflow. With all the rain that was now pouring down onto every cat, the ground became muddy and cats began to slip and slide, some getting swept away into the lake and drowning. It seemed as if all was lost, until the remaining cats finally arrived at the hill where camp was set up on top. Alpinedusk got behind Starlingflight, shoving the chocolate tabby up an onward before finally reaching camp. Upon arriving back at camp the adrenaline seemed to begin wearing off and cats couldn’t help but quickly sit and lean against one another.

“You remember way back when we first started this journey… I promised to follow you to the end… I guess that means in death too…” Starlinglfight whispered, his legs giving out from under him. The chocolate tabby collapsed to the ground, his eyes fluttering shut. Silence fell as cats watched in horror as a final breath escaped from the tom before his body remained still. The three medicine cats exchanged looks, Fawnthroat gave the two toms a look before padding forward, resting her head against the tom's back. The ginger and white she-cat frowned and straightened up, shaking her head no gently. "He's gone…"

No sooner did the medicine cat she-cat confirm the loss of the clan's deputy did cats from patrols begin to drop. Exhaustion and the heat finally catching up to them. Shiverstone watched as his clan mates began to fall, his blue eyes wide as he watched as one after another fell. The seal point bicolor tom felt a pang in his chest as memories from patrols with everyone and memories he had with his mate flashed in his mind. With all the stress and shock from everything that had unfolded Shiverstone wasn't able to push his true feelings towards everyone down anymore. He glanced at Garterlily, giving his former apprentice a genuine smile for once before he himself collapsed.

As the day progressed onward the rain became a downpour and the sound of lightning cracks and thunder booms echoed throughout the camp more frequently. It only added to the melancholy atmosphere that now plagued HazeClan's camp. With so many lost to the fire, flash flood, and other complications, the remaining cats of the Clan seemed to forget about the rain and huddled together at the heart of camp to grieve together. What were they to do now? No leader. No deputy. No nothing. They were at a loss on who should be the next successor.

Finally some cat cleared their throat, all eyes landing on Foxwish. "If Inkfire hadn't retired last moon I'd suggest he take over. He's been here practically since the beginning." Foxwish meowed, pausing briefly and looking at the tom. "No offense, Inkfire." She added, bowing her head respectfully to him. Inkfire gave a small shake of his head, brushing it off as he knew Foxwish meant no harm by it. "It's fine Foxwish. However…" Inkfire began, a misty look crossing the tom's face as he trailed off. With Inkfire in some sort of trance cats once again seem to fall into a panic. "What are we to do? Is this the end of HazeClan?" A chorus of mews echoed throughout.

The noise around him faded to almost a whisper and the world seemed to have a misty appearance to it. Inkfire looked around in confusion, a startled look crossing his face as he saw his body sitting a few paw lengths away. "What?" He muttered, taking a step towards his body. A soft chuckle from behind Inkfire caught his attention, causing the tom to turn and see a large stocky starry pelted brown tabby smiling at him. "It's been sometime… you've grown into a fine tom Inkfire. Congratulations on finally having kits of your own." The tom purred. The mostly black chimera wasted no time in closing the gap between him and the other tom. "Owlstorm…"

Owlstorm chuckled, embracing the other tom before taking a few steps back and sitting on his haunches. "I know it's been some time since I've last visited… and now isn't the time any cat would really want to see any of us. However Hazestar and I are here to help offer a little guidance in these dark times." The former deputy explained, flicking his tail towards Vaporwind and Hazestar who sat farther off deep in conversation. Inkfire glanced over, a soft smile appearing on his face as he watched an eager Vaporwind exchange words with the founder of HazeClan. Giving a small shake of his head and chuckling, Inkfire turned his attention back to Owlstorm. "I can only guess that since Hazestar is here he will be revealing the leader and you shall be revealing the deputy?" Inkfire asked. Owlstorm chuckled and nodded his head yes. "Smart and straight to the point as usual my son. But yes. I know that both of the cats that have been picked fit well and I feel like they will continue HazeClan's legacy well. We have chosen Mothtuft. He's got a good relationship with the medicine cats and before Wheatcloud joined us he had seemed to handle outside clan relationships well. Besides, he'll never be alone on this journey of his. He will have you and the other elders to help." Owlstorm explained.

Silence fell between the two toms as Inkfire let the information sink in, before he nodded. "You're right. Mothtuft is a good choice." He meowed. "And with how the others look up to you and trust the guidance of our medicine cats, I have no doubt that the Clan will accept the new duo. I must leave now… I have kept you long enough. Go. Sooth our clan. Let them know that we will not fall without a fight." the large stocky tom meowed. The two toms looked at each other with bittersweet happiness in their eyes, exchanging a final goodbye and nuzzling each other one last time. "Also just because you're retired doesn't mean you can join the rest of us any time soon." Owlstorm teased, his starry figure fading out of sight.

Although he had just lost his mother, Vaporwind was doing his best to console Turtledove. The longhaired seal tortie point had been crying for some time, unable to fully grasp the fact that Pantherstar was gone. Now curled around Vaporwind only soft whimpers and sobs came from Turtledove every now and then. The black tabby rested his head atop of the she-cat's, giving her comforting licks on her ears in hopes to soothe her. Turtledove eventually fell silent, seeming to be unable to cry anymore. The elder would occasionally glance at Vaporwind, let out a heavy sigh and then look away. “We’ll get through this…” he whispered, nuzzling her cheek.

The black tabby looked around, trying to make notes on who would most likely need special attention the next few days as he awaited for someone to step up. As he looked around, some cat mentioned Inkfire and all eyes seemed to turn to the mostly black chimera tom. It didn’t take long for Vaporwind or any cat else to notice the trance Inkfire seemed to slip into in mid sentence with Foxwish. To the majority of the clan it looked strange and something unnatural, however to Vaporwind and those who knew what to look for, they knew Inkfire was receiving a message from the ancestors. He smiled, happy to know that they were not alone in these dark times and that the ancestors had been watching over them. “You know we try to do things like this in dreams or in private. However special circumstances require drastic measures.” A voice beside Vaporwind spoke. The medicine cat turned his head, a gasp escaping from him as he caught sight of a taupe colored starry pelted tabby beside him. The starry pelted tom let out a soft chuckle, dipping his head in a small greeting before speaking once more. “Greetings young Vaporwind. I am Hazetsar. Founder of HazeClan.” Hazetsar spoke, his eyes moving from Vaporwind to the clan cats around them.

Vaporwind himself took a look around noticing things had seemed off and that he was no longer in his body but rather beside it. “A message from the ancestors. Never experienced it this way, only in dreams. It seems so different seeing the world this way.” Vaporwind softly spoke. Hazestar gave a chuckle. “It’s how our ancestors see the world when we visit. I believe you know why I’m here, yes?” he asked. Vaporwind looked to Hazestar and nodded. “Of course. I’m sure it’s to help us decide who should lead us next.” Vaporwind meowed. The taupe tabby tom nodded once more, nodding towards where Inkfire and Owlstorm spoke farther off from them. “Owlstorm and I have discussed with the others who would best suit HazeClan as the next deputy and leader duo. Owlstorm will be informing Inkfire of the deputy and I am here to tell you the name of the cat we picked for leader.” Hazestar explained. Vaporwind’s gaze shifted over to Owlstorm and Inkfire when Hazestar gestured to them, giving a small nod as the founding leader explained the reason they were here. “We have chosen Peridotgaze to be leader. She not only puts the clan first, but she often gives those who need the extra attention the time of day. She is a bit headstrong, but she is driven to help our clan grow. She will be balanced out by the deputy that we have picked out. They will be a great duo together. Plus I trust you and the others will help guide them both.” Hazestar explained.

Vaporwind instantly looked to Peridotgaze upon hearing her name, noticing although she had sadness in her eyes the mostly white she-cat was doing her best to conceal others and remain calm. The more he thought about it the more it made sense why the ancestors chose her. Peridotgaze was fairly level headed the majority of the time, although she had her moments but who didn’t. “I can see why she was chosen.” he meowed softly. Hazestar smiled, rising to his paws and bowing slightly to Vaporwind. “We thank you Vaporwind. For helping the clan in times like this. Remember… You too need time to grieve. Lean on those close to you and know you aren’t alone in these dark times.” Hazestar meowed softly, touching noses with the other tom before stepping back. “I must go and Inkfire and you have a message to deliver.” the founding tom meowed, his starry figure fading before Vaporwind was once again back to his normal self.

Inkfire and Vaporwind exchanged looks, each one giving the other a small nod before the two of them padded over to the high rock. Leaping on to it, the two toms stood next to one another and Inkfire called out to gain the attention of every cat. "I know you all opined that Vaporwind and I had briefly been in some sort of trance. Well Hazestar and Owlstorm paid us a visit." He began. At the mention of the former leader and deputy duo, small chatter between cats fell silent. "They each gave us a name. A name to tell us who our successors shall be. They also said that it'll take much more than this for HazeClan to fall and that we shouldn't give up without a fight. Now before I let Vaporwind announce the new leader, I'll announce who Owlstorm and the others picked." Inkfire spoke. He looked down at his clan mates, his bright yellow eyes landing on a black and white pelt. "Mothtuft. They have watched us all since the day we became a part of HazeClan. They like the relationship you hold with the medicine cats along with how well you seem to handle outside clan relationships as well." The tom spoke. Small gasps came from the crowd before the whole clan erupted into a chorus of cheering. The black and white tom sat stunned, only to be snapped out of it by a nudge from his best friend Cloudynight. "I will do my best for you all." Mothtuft meowed. With a nod Inkfire then turned his attention to Vaporwind and gave the black tabby tom a small nod. "Your turn…" He whispered to the young medicine cat.

Vaporwind looked from the crowd around the high rock to Inkfire before finally selling back onto the rest of his clan mates. Taking a deep breath he stepped forward once Inkfire stepped back. "As Inkfire announced, we both had special visitors from our ancestors to help us in these dark times. We have lost friends and family… my mother…" He began, the grief finally grabbing ahold of him. Vaporwind could feel tears begin to well up in his eyes, giving his head a small shake and clearing his throat before continuing to speak. "Hazestar has picked our next leader. She's small, quirky, adventurous, and is almost always the first to help our elders." Vaporwind explained. His eyes locked with those of sparkling green ones. They belonged to a mostly white she-cat with black ears and a black tail. "If you haven't already figured it out I'm talking about you, Peridotgaze." He purred. Once again the Clan erupted into a loud chorus of cheering, many congratulations echoing throughout.

Inkfire smiled, giving the two cats a nod as he and Vaporwind both left down from the high rock. "I know it's not the best time, but we all know you should not wait. Peridotgaze, it's time to receive your nine lives." Inkfire meowed as he approached the she-cat. "To ensure your safety I think it's best if a few cats go with you. We'll keep Mothtuft here just in case." The chimera spoke. "Of course. It makes sense." Peridotgaze spoke, her eyes scanning the crowd. "My family and I can escort you Peridotgaze." Cloudynight meowed, stepping forward with his mate, kits, and adopted sister Hopstripe close behind him. "We'll come too." Both Garterlily and Basilbreeze spoke, also stepping forward to join Cloudynight and his family. The green eyed she-cat turned to face Cloudynight, giving him a nod. "Thank you. I know I'll be in good paws with you guys… I guess we shouldn't wait any longer should we…" she meowed.

With Cloudynightand Wheatcloud leading the way, Peridotgaze traveled behind them. Hopstripe and Skyface flanked her sides while Barleycloud, Basilbreeze, and Garterlily took up the rear. It wasn't that long a journey to the ancestor tree, the group arriving just as the rain seemed to subside for the time being. “Alright, so it’s big enough for two. The rest of our group will have to remain outside.” Cloudynight spoke. “It’s only right if you go inside with her, my love. Afterall you’re the medicine cat. You know how this is supposed to work. The rest of us will keep an eye out here until you two come back out.” Wheatcloud meowed, stepping forward and gently pressing her nose against the fluffy black and white medicine cat’s cheek. Cloudynight leaned into his mate’s touch, a soft purr escaping from him before he pulled away and nodded. “Alright. I trust if anything goes wrong we’ll be well protected.” he chuckled, giving the group a final nod before disappearing inside the opening in the tree trunk. Peridotgaze followed behind him, Wheatcloud taking a seat just outside the opening with the others sitting nearby.

Once inside Peridotgaze’s eyes fell onto the small waterfall of amber sap that seemed to slowly pool down into a trench in the ground. “Taking a small lap at the sap will lull you into a deep sleep where you will then awake surrounded by our ancestors. They will take it from there.” Cloudynight explained, taking a seat and gesturing to the sap. “It can be a little overwhelming and I’m sure there are some cats who can’t wait to see you again. I’ll be here when you wake up.” He softly purred. Taking a deep breath, Perditogaze padded over to the pool of sap and bent down to take a small drink from it. It was thick and very sweet, but to her surprise it wasn’t as bad as she thought it would be. Upon finishing the small amount she had, the mostly white she-cat went from standing to a curled position, waiting for sleep to grip her.

In a blink, Peridotgaze awoke to a misty starry scene before her, many shadowy starry figures surrounding her. Rising to her paws it didn’t take long for her to pick out nine particular cats that seemed to stand out more than any cat else. Before her, she recognized seven out of the nine. Pantherstar, her leader, the one she had served since the day she first joined. Starlingflight, a timid yet well respected cat who did well as deputy all the way up to his final breath. Brightpaw, her first apprentice who had tragically died too young, but had died fighting for HazeClan. Magpiepaw, Mockingjay’s twin sister and her former den mate. Dawnpaw, another former den mate of hers that Magpiepaw and her had grown close to. Runningbrook, a former elder of the clan she had grown close to when she was an apprentice. Finally out of the nine that she recognized was a large white and gray tom. Smokepatch. The tom that had raised her since she was a young kit, her grandfather. Overwhelmed by seeing the faces she had lost of the moons, Peridotgaze couldn’t help but begin to tear up. “Don’t cry my little gem…” Smokepatch meowed. Peridotgaze took a deep breath, rubbing a paw across her face to wipe away the tears before giving a nod and lookin back at the nine cats with a look of determination.

Smiling, the first cat she didn’t recognize, a large stocky brown tom stepped forward. “I am Owlstorm. Former deputy of HazeClan. My time ended before you came, but I have watched over all since the moment they have joined. With this first life I give you loyalty. To always know where your allegiance will always belong.” Upon speaking his final word, Owlstorm touched his nose to Peridotgaze’s forehead, a small spark popping between them.

Next was Mockingjay, the black and white tom smiled brightly at Peridotgaze. “It’s good to see you again so soon.” He chuckled. His life came to an end a matter of moments ago. “I grant you your next life. With this life I give you playfulness. To always have time to feel free and have fun like we did when we were younger.” Mockingjay meowed, smiling as he touched his nose Peridotgaze’s forehead. A warmth feeling spread throughout the she-cat’s body, a smile appearing on her face as she watched Mockingjay step back into line. “Thank you…” Peridotgaze whispered.

Next came Mockingjay’s twin and former dear friend, Magpiepaw. The two she-cats embraced briefly before Magpiepaw pulled away and began to speak. “Although I’m sad to see Mockingjay so soon, I thank you for keeping him company during the time he was still alive. With this third life, Peridotgaze I give you adventure. Never stop exploring. Visit every nook and cranny like we wanted too back then…” she meowed, touching her nose to the other she-cat’s forehead. With her third life, a shock wave quickly spread throughout her body leaving the mostly white she-cat a bit breathless. “Hang in there.” Magpiepaw whispered, stepping back and letting the next cat in line take their turn.

Next came Brightpaw, a young calico she-cat who had died during the battle of Hazeclan versus Zipperfang’s cult. Peridotgaze was heartbroken she wasn’t able to save her first apprentice, saddened the young she-cat never made it to her warrior name. “Don’t look so sad Peridotgaze. No cat could have predicted what had happened. You did your best and taught me well. I’m grateful to have had you as my mentor. With this next life I give you guidance. To continue to shape the young minds of future cats.” Brightpaw purred, touching noses with the other she-cat. A wave of burning seemed to rip through her body quickly followed by a wave of coolness.

Next cat up was Runningbrook, a former elder Peridotgaze had adopted as her grandmother when she was a young apprentice. “My have you grown Peridotgaze. I knew you were destined for greatness. With this life I give you wisdom. May you always have something to pass along to those after you.” the seal lynx she-cat purred. She touched her nose to Peridotgaze’s forehead, another shock wave ripping throughout her body. Peridotgaze gritted her teeth, sinking her claws into the ground until the pain subsided. “Almost there Peridotgaze. You can do this.” she purred.

Once Runningbrook took her spot back next to Smokepatch, Starlingflight stood up and padded forward. “I’m sorry Mothtuft and you are being thrown into this, but we have faith you two will do well. With this life I grant you kindness. To continue to always show kindness even in the toughest of times.” the chocolate tabby meowed softly. He then touched his nose to Peridotgaze’s forehead, a warm comforting feeling spread throughout Peridotgaze. “Just three more to go. Hang in there.” Starlingflight smiled.

Pantherstar passed Starlingflight, exchanging a friendly smile with her best friend before taking her place in front of Peridotgaze. “Looks like I’m next.” she chuckled softly, touching her nose to the mostly white she-cat’s forehead. “I have faith in you Peridotgaze. With this life I grant you determination. To always fight for HazeClan’s purpose. For us to thrive no matter what.” She meowed, a few shock waves seeming to rip through her one by one before finally coming to a halt. “Never stop fighting.” Pantherstar firmly said, giving a small smile before gesturi8ng for a taupe colored tabby to step forward.

“Greetings Peridotgaze. I am the founder of HazeClan. Hazestar. I grant you your eighth life. Leadership. To lead HazeClan into a new era. You may doubt yourself every now and then, but know we are here rooting for you every step of the way.” Hazestar meowed. He then touched his nose to Peridotgaze’s forehead, a strong wave of confidence flooding her body. As he stepped away Peridotgaze felt more ready to face things head on then she had ever before.

Finally after every cat else had given their life to Peridotgaze came Smokepatch. The two cats stood in the center gazing at one another before finally embracing. “Hello my little gem… You have grown into a fine young cat. I’m so proud of you.” Smokepatch softly meowed. Peridotgaze took a deep shaky breath, stepping back and smiling at her grandfather. “It’s thanks to you…” She whispered. Smokepatch chuckled, leaning forward and touching noses with his grandkit. “With this final life Peridotgaze, I give you love. Not just for our clan mates but for yourself. May you always have love in your life.” It was like a roaring fire blazed inside her, but this fire felt different. It was warm and gave her strength. Upon pulling away Smokepatch smiled. “Welcome Peridotstar.” he purred proudly. Soon his own voice was joined by many as the ancestors of HazeClan chanted Peridotstar.
