Aloof squeezed himself out of the tunnel- He was going to turn things around. He was going to patrol, dig, hunt and… Gather. He hated gathering- He was a natural at being bad at it. But that was the old him, that was little kit Aloof. Today he was going to gather. For real. He shook out his fur, determination set on his face and a spring in his step. His eyes darted around, searching for any elils or intruders. Nothing. He sighed, thank goodness. He began forward, keeping an eye on everything. He checked at the roots of a nearby tree- nothing. He checked at the foot of a mountain- nothing. He checked everywhere he could think of, but he couldn’t find anything. He felt so embarrassed- He thought today would be the day, but he was wrong. Maybe he was stuck as “Old Aloof” forever. He shut his eyes tight, envisioning himself in future- he was an older Aloof. He was proud, chest puffed and chin up. His chest swelled with joy at the image, and he held on to that feeling. He hardened his features- He was going to gather. For real.He began forth again, stronger this time. He had been searching for awhile now, and he hadn’t found anything at all. All right, Aloof. You got this, pal. Just find a few things to bring back, and you’ll be good. Just find something small. Like maybe a nice plant will do, huh? Alright, see here! He grinned, leaning down to grab a big piece of moss that was balled up at the roots of a tree. He smiled triumphantly. Take that, Old Aloof. Who’s messing up now? Not me, that’s for su- His moment of victory vanished, replaced with a low growling. He froze. He slowly turned in horror, and his eyes met that of a very large, very angry dingo. Oh. He backed up, his spine knocking into the trunk of the tree. His breathing quickened, fear pulsing through his veins. He was shaking. At this point, he formulated a very, very, very insane plan. He knew it was either go for it or get eaten, so he took a shaky breath, looked into the dogs eyes and.. BAM! He shot upwards, kicking off of the dog’s muzzle, right between its eyes and managing to land in the tree, just a branch above its reach. The adrenaline came right about now, making him burst out laughing in disbelief. Below him, the canines slathering jaws threatened below him, but he trusted this forest. And the trust payed off. He jumped into the leaves, away from the dog’s vision and onto another branch. And another, and another. He grinned as he landed back on solid ground, and he looked back behind him where he had been. He looked down at his paws, the wad of moss gripped firmly between. It wasn’t much, but he had it, he was a gatherer. For real. “Take that one, Old Aloof.”
