you spot a someone standing at the edge of the trees, the dappled sunlight casting
long shadows across her gentle features. one of her hands rests gently on the back of
a doe, her fingers placed in between the deer's shoulder blades as she pets it gently.

this is calypso, guardian of the forest. she never speaks. sightings in the local town
are brief, flashes of purple feathers that send men scurrying after her, their eyes
bright with the prospect of finally seeing their blessed forest goddess.

those men are never seen again.

calypso is the woodland equivalent of a siren, fair maidens who lure men to their deaths
( though calypso is not too picky - she has captured many a woman, too ). her soft
smile, her gentle looks, the cheerful animals that gather around her, all of those things
would indicate that she is not dangerous, that she would not harm a soul.

they are wrong. calypso is ruthless, despite her beauty. unlike her ocean counterparts,
she does not sing, oh, no. she hypnotizes the men and women that she draws into the
forest with her mesmerising tail feathers.

humans. so easy to influence.

calypso's fingertips brushed across ferns as she led the unsuspecting young man deeper
into the trees, the fern's tendrils curling around her wrist and springing back into place.
the man behind her appeared blind to the shifting foliage, as his eyes were fixated on
the magnificent arrangement of feathers behind the beautiful woman he was following.

the trees gave way to a clearing, radiant green grass and flowers littering the forest floor.
various woodland creatures grazed or fluttered about - a doe here, a bluejay there.
calypso turned towards the human, her eyes bright and wide. the man gave a slightly dazed
smile, oblivious to the tendrils of grass curling up his feet, wrapping around his calves,
tightening, crawling up his waist to encircle his torso and then his chest. his breath faltered
but his smile did not - as the man's face began to disappear beneath the plants, calypso
drifted forward, pressed a kiss against his forehead and stepped back. the vines
pulled him down, the human disappearing beneath a carpet of grass. once more, the
clearing was empty for all except calypso.

nature. one of calypso's greatest assets. the flora and fauna that reside in the forest
with her are her loyal companions, helping her to ensnare her victims. the animals
give the illusion of peace and serenity, while the plants capture the innocent.

- - -

her purpose in life? calypso has been alive for centuries, her presence noted by many
a historian. she has always remained elusive, skipping from forest to forest and
luring townsfolk into her grasp. by luring unsuspecting humans into the forest, her
own life span becomes longer.

that is one of the sole differences between herself and ocean sirens - while they
lure men for no purpose, calypso absorbs their life forces, much like a plant
would absorb nutrients to continue thriving.
