As I walked down the corridors, I couldn't help but wonder if I was going to get fired. It would be my fault, I suppose...but it wasn't fair. All I'd done was protect the pidgeon from Jeb's cruel teasing...that wasn't bad right. I sighed heavily. There was really no use arguing with myself like this...The boss would decide. He always did.
And he was always on Jeb's side.
Really, you couldn't blame him...Jeb was his son. But that excused a little favoritism, not Jeb being a total Jerk, and really, really weird, twisted and cruel. I sighed again, and looked out of the window.
Above me, it was raining, harsh gray-black thunderclouds covering the sky. Occasionally there was a rumble, then a crack and flash of lightning. Ironic, the weather seemed to match my terrible mood.
As I looked across, I jumped. In a flash of lighting, a dog had stepped out of the shadows. But this was no ordinary dog. I recognized it immediately from the newspapers. A Plague Hound.
The hound advanced until it was standing, nose slightly pressed to the huge glass window. I gulped...but gazing into it's eyes, I felt no fear. That was when I realized it.
The eyes in the bush when I was saving the pigeon....were the eyes of the Plague Hound before me.
Gasping slightly, I pressed my hand to the glass, barely daring to move.
The hound blinked up at me, it's gaze deep. As I watched it, there was a sudden bang.
"GET IN HERE NOW!!".
The boss. Turning back to the Hound, I found that it had gone. Sighing, I ran into the Boss' room, preparing to be fired.
Later.
Would I be slightly obsessed if the first thing I did after I was fired was;
Buy a load of food (Chicken, Fish, Pasta, Bread), go walking in a thunderstorm....to find a mutant??
Maybe.
But to me, the hound wasn't a mutant. It had a strange grace, a beauty to it....that made all of the mutantness go away. I sighed, not expecting it to come.
But it, He came.
He was waiting for me, looking at me with amusement and respect, before turning and beginning to wolf the food. It was only then that I realized how skinny he was.
We went on like that. He followed me around, popping up a strange moments. But wherever he appeared, I was glad to see him, that was sure. And I always had food for him as well. As the days went by, I saw more of him, and began to learn more about Plague Hounds. He was a hawk plague hound, and he would live for around 74-140 years. Impressive. I also learnt more about him as a character. So much so, that I named him - Rijeka. I've only seen him look happier once or twice. He was over the moon when I gave him a name.
And I can still remember the day he decided to live with me. I had come home, worrying about Rijeka. I hadn't seen him all afternoon, which was odd. Shaking myself, I opened my door wearily...to see Rijeka. On my sofa.
Eating potato chips.
I broke into a smile. "Rijeka!" He gave me his goofy hound grin, and leapt up at me.
I knew it then...
I had a friend for life.
