Crying Wolf... Again;About halfway through my first cheese sandwich, another howl echoed through the forest. This time it sounded much closer. I nervously choked down the mouthful of sandwich I'd been working on, my appetite all but gone, and placed what remained back on the wax paper I'd used for wrapping. What was it with this darn forest and cheese sandwiches?! I was beginning to think my favorite snack was unlucky or something!
Before I did anything else I looked to Doc. The stallion's ears were alert, and his head was up to scent the breeze. If he'd had flesh on his face, I'd imagine his nostrils would be flaring. Otherwise, he was just standing there. In a nutshell - he was acting cautious... but he wasn't panicking. This fact
alone reassured me enough so that I could sit on the edge of the well and carefully re-wrap my lunch before placing it back in my backpack, instead of just pitching it in there willy-nilly and getting the heck OUT of this park.
I was beginning to suspect it might have been utter foolishness to come back.
My things gathered, I got to my feet, shouldered my pack, and started making tracks toward my Grel. Whatever might happen next, I knew he would protect me. That wolf would find itself soulless before it even had a chance to spring! On one level I found this knowledge disturbing. Yes. I admit that. But I also took a strange comfort from it. What kind of wolf ran around howling in broad daylight, anyway? Was it rabid? If so, its death would be a service to the rest of the population, now wouldn't it...?
Did you guys get spooked?; As I was about to climb onto Doc's back, a rustling in the bushes behind us made us both jump. But when we turned to look, what we saw wasn't a wolf. In fact, it wasn't even a canine! No, it was a
Grelifcent - an oddly coloured Grelifcent that, right off the bat, made me think of nothing more or less than peanut-butter and grape jelly (I hadn't gotten to finish my lunch, ok?!). Then I spied its ears, which were tipped in bright pink. Instantly, a chill went through me and I lost my happy thoughts. This was the Grel from last night! The one that had been stalking me! One look at Doc told me he was none too happy with our visitor either. This in mind, mounted up as carefully as I could, keeping my eyes on the mysterious Grell all the while.
Then it howled. Yup. Ok. I'd had enough. This was too weird. Taking a hold of the reins I got Doc walking, then trotting, and guided him toward the path that I believed led toward home, hoping the nutty creature wouldn't follow us.
Did this Grelifcent fool everybody? No, she didn't fool me. I knew she was evil from the get-go. Unless you meant... oh! Were you asking if I thought she was a wolf? Yes. I did. And I actually, kinda, sorta, wish she had been. Wolves are one thing. Crazy Grelifcents are another.... *shiver*
