What makes them upset:
When Duke was feeling down, they'd take a walk in the woods surrounding their home. But recently, they'd found that they'd leave what they usually considered their sanctum even more displeased than when they entered.
It was autumn when it first happened. A small fight with their mother had sparked today's trip - nothing large, but still something that warranted a relaxing stroll through the forest. They'd hoped they would see a deer today. Nothing would cheer them up more. And as they padded, slowly, quietly, letting the sounds of birds twittering and the nearby creek rushing sooth them. Orange, red, yellow, and brown danced around them as wind picked up leaves and swirled them around before letting them float gently back to the floor. Today was a good day. Duke picked up the pace just a little. They brushed their hair out of their eyes, a rare gesture, just so they could capture more of the forest in their gaze. A slow smile spread on their face.
And then it vanished.
They caught a whiff of something sickening. And with a quick glance up, they could see it. A plume of smoke, rising high into the air. A sense of duty, of sorts, enveloped Duke. They held their breath, lifted their head to the sky, and followed the smoke to the source. It was a campfire, still raging in the middle of a clearing, dangerously close to a patch of grass. The clearing was covered in garbage. Duke's throat tightened, and it wasn't just from the smoke. They let out a breath and sucked in another, then got to work putting out the flames, using the nearby creak to smother them. Once they had dissipated, Duke began to breath again. What kind of idiot would set a fire out here and then leave it unattended? If I hadn't found it this forest could've been turned to ashes, they thought with distain. They picked up the trash in disgust too. They couldn't stand people who disrespected nature.
They started back home, but not two minutes of walking had passed before they had heard a wail. Duke looked down.
Turns out, they did end up seeing a deer today.
A fawn lay on the forest floor, and Duke had nearly tripped on it. "Oh, sorry, I didn't see you..." Duke trailed off as their eyes wandered towards the fawn's leg. A trap clung to the fawn's leg, digging into it. The metal teeth glistened sickeningly in the sun. Duke's breath hitched, unable to look at the sight for long. They bolted home.
After they had disposed of the trash properly, they contacted the nearby vet to take care of the fawn. Duke didn't ever hear about the fawn again, just that it had safely been released. But even still, after that day, one thing was clear.
The thing that upset Duke the most were those who tried to destroy her forest, her home, and anyone in it.
