Short story on why his skull and spine changed colors:

Kal-El had recently finished school, and was about to enter college. Although his species was naturally shy, he was even shyer than most. He had never really had close friendships, and was anxious to get college done. He was in love with art, and majored in that area, exploring his creative side. One day, a Longneck started to try and talk with him. At first, he was wary, but eventually Kal-El made a new friend. When they were talking, he accidentally spilled the paint all over himself. Luckily, it didn't stain his fur, but it did stain his skull and spine, since the paint was very strong. His friend felt bad, but decided to decorate the his stained areas, so they wouldn't be bland. He's been unique ever since, and though unsure at first, he learned to love this mistake, seeing as it brought his friend closer.
