ESM Event #6: Black Leopard Appy with Reverse Brindle

Postby Neah » Mon Nov 27, 2017 11:42 am

Eastern Standard Mules originated from the royal family. They were produced by breeding a donkey and a horse together. Eastern Standard Mules are not like regular mules for they can reproduce. It is rare for twins to occur but it can happen and has happened in the past! They are very friendly but are also rather stubborn. They are rideable and can go down the western or English route. Eastern Standard Mules can range anywhere from 12hh-16.1hh.

I'm very fond of this kid so you're going to have to charm them away from me.

An indignant whinny threatened to bubble up in her throat. Dakota was tempted to thrash, just to be contrary, but one sharp look from her handler made her cease. Though not without reluctance. His hand, warmed from his gloves felt particularly nice on this cold morning as he laid them on her face, but she resisted the urge to nuzzle him as she turned her head to the side with indignation. She heard him sigh, but he didn't move from her side.

But she hated doing this every year. Pulling sleighs for children during the holiday event was torturous. Hands like vice grips always seemed to find her ears or lips no matter how high she held her head. Dakota usually prided herself on her gentle nature, but if it meant that she'd have to deal with children like these... She may as well take after her sire in temperament.

The only thing that made the job at least a little bit tolerable was the man beside her. His gentle, no-nonsense nature calmed her like no other in the face of such squawling babies.

But, that didn't matter right now, because he tricked her into getting into the cart and now Dakota wasn't going to grace him with her attention. So there.

She didn't even care that he had to stand up the whole ride to the holiday fair. Serves him right.

As the whining of the cart's wheels stopped and the rumble of the truck ceased, Dakota could hear the squeals of the children enjoying the other festivities grow louder. She snorted with uneasiness. Dakota wondered if the floorboards of the cart were enough to dig her hooves in...

She looked on with dread as the cart doors swung open, and cool morning light, made even brighter by the snow it reflected off of, flooded the previously low-lit trailer. One eye slid over to her handler, and his deadpan frown made any of her protests die before they could start. She still scuffed a hoof against the flooring to display her distaste.

But, his gentle hand slid its way down her neck, and his expression morphed into something apologetic. At least he realized what Dakota had to go through. Against herself, she relaxed under his touch. Well... they were here now. Might as well make the most of the fair. {391}

Breeding Notes:

- Can't produce chestnut foals.
- 50% chance to pass on appaloosa.
- All appaloosa passed on will be leopard appaloosa.
- 20% chance to pass on brindle.

Story: 460 words

Adeline was brought to us, cold and shivering. The mountains of Colorado can be a harsh and unforgiving place, especially to the young and weak. That is just what she was back then. She was small and frail. It was very early spring time, and babies would be starting to be born into the feral herds. For now, the herds were high in the mountaintops, and in the next couple weeks, they would start to move down the mountains as the foals would be born in the lower valleys where it was warmer and the grass was flourishing. Adeline came too soon. Born premature and unable to stand, her dam was forced to choose between her survival and that of her foal. Her herd couldn’t wait for her. The needs of the herd and that of the remaining foals to be born pushed them on, leaving Adeline and her dam near the top of the mountain.
Adeline’s mother begged her baby to stand, and as she tried, the weaker she became. Until she was so cold she could hardly move. Her dam cried to her, mourning her baby who was struggling to survive. Luckily Adeline and her dam were spotted just as Adeline was being born by one of the park rangers instructed to count the numbers of the horses coming down off the mountain and the foals born that year. He watched Adeline’s birth, knowing it was too soon and far too cold for the baby. Immediately he took action, calling in a rescue team to save the foal and ensure the mare returned to her herd so the baby could hopefully be reunited with its mother when it was healthy and flourishing.
Adeline was brought to the rescue center, her mother had ended up abandoning her as rescuers got close, fearing she was in danger, knowing their was nothing she could do to save he baby on her own.The rescuers worked day and night for almost a week straight to save the tiny foal, first drying her off and warming her to get her body temperature regulated and stable. Then she was given fluids to better her strength so that she could eat. Once she started eating, everything started working in her favor, she regained her strength and was able to stand and walk on her own. She began to get playful and enjoy seeing us come to feed her. We started to worry that she’d get attached to us. Our plan was to return her to her mother as soon as possible and it was planned for the following week. Reuniting her ended up a failure. We released her dam and took Adeline back to the center where she was adopted by me, one of her rescuers.
