- born benjamin blackburn, machiavelli is certainly an interesting character. youngest of three, he grew up on the farm that had been owned by his family for centuries on the english countryside. his family specialized in growing wheat and as soon as he could walk, he was expected to join in the family business. ben was the only son and his father had every intention of passing the entire business off to him when he was of age. however, ben was nonplussed at the idea of living on a farm the rest of his life. growing up with the expectation of work and diligence hadn't bred a work ethic into him. instead, ben ended up something of a hedonist; he had a desire to travel and see the world. he wanted to experience the pleasure of life along with the grittiness of it.
fighting became frequent in his family as ben became less willing to work and more vocal about it. it wasn't as if he wanted his life handed to him by his family without doing anything for it; he understood that regardless of what he did, he would have to work for it. but farm life was meaningless to him and he found it so tedious and boring that he became resentful of his family. by the time he was 19, he was unwilling to stay there anymore. he had money saved through several dealings of dubious legality and somewhat sketchy contact information of a "friend" in new york city. without much of a goodbye, ben bought a one-way ticket to nyc and did whatever he could to forget england.
whether it was luck or misfortune is still hard to decide, but ben was afforded a place to live with his "friend." things were rough at first and ben got in with an ill-crowd. nothing he hadn't seen or participated in back in england, but it was a different scale. it was work however and the words "right" and "wrong" didn't mean much to him anymore. it was after about two weeks of living in new york that ben changed his name (though not legally) to machiavelli, after the renaissance writer who said a prince should do anything at all to keep his people in line, to protect his identity.
