When the northern jäykkä were first discovered they had a noticeably shaggier fur due to the cold environment they inhabited. These jaykka were used by their viking owners to carry them into the unknown that surrounded their settlements. As true to the viking goddess Epona, the Vikings allowed these Drafts to remain semi-feral, simply gaining their trust which allowed them to work as equals rather than owner and pet. They revered their equine friends and kept a respectful wonder to these wild beasts. Due to their temperament and hardiness, many before have tried to tame these wild drafts in a traditional way and have been unsuccessful.

The color is caused by the bacteria that feed on the plants and algae of the reefs. It is also due to the salinity of the ocean and due to the depth. The shallower the water, the more the light reflects off the bottom of the ocean.
