Story written by SnowyAshes
It is dark, and the air is alive. These are the conditions which suit me so well. My eyes, like two burning cinders of ebony, dance with a playful light as sharp, stabbing streaks of white-hot energy crackle across their jet surface and leap out to blaze harmlessly through my shaggy rusty ochre underbelly of fur and out across the scorched charcoal grey of my back, losing itself in the stark white tips of my tail and cold icy glare that adorns the ends of my five proud horns. I am Jaga, of the Songrem race, protector of these plains and stalker of the desert’s plagues. Though I haven’t been here in a week, I have returned now.
The night was cold, but as the sunlight streaks across the barren desert land, I know even without glancing at the temperature log (part of all the information provided to me as a hero of this land, along with my health status, current location and the time until my greatest enemy shall arrive) that it will be oppressively blistering in no time at all.
As I stand in my base, wisps of ethereal vaporous mist juxtapose the scorching air, drawing my attention. As I suspected; it’s no coincidence – An evanescent figure flickers in and out of existence, as unstable in form as surely in mind. I know instantaneously that she is a ghost. Lashing my tail I stalk forwards, for ghosts are my primary enemy in this land. With a bound I am upon her before she can do me any damage, and soon she is nothing more than the clammy mist she summoned to conceal her vague presence, though I spot something tangible in the fog. She has left behind something useful! A coarse wooden box, splintering and rusted from the damp environment it would be exposed to, despite the desert’s heat, in the possession of a ghost, stands unassumingly before me. I crack it open, and find it contains useful equipment for the battle ahead – stronger armour, more effective protection talismans, and potions with higher potency for restoring my health.
One item grasps my attention above the others – spherical in shape, and relatively small. I feel a swell of anticipation rise from within me as I turn the sphere in my paw. On the other side I see them – ancient symbols which call out whispers of long forgotten power, one of the rarest items which can be found in possession of a ghost. Grateful to this stroke of luck, I stash away the orb along with other items, and look out for any other ghosts in the area. I’ll still need to stock up on other items they may have, after all.
After battling the ghosts I gather essentials in my inventory pack and proceed with the long crawl through the shimmering sand, which is punctuated only but dry golden grass, barely living in the unforgiving climate. This is one appointment I cannot miss. I would much rather stay in my base at the abandoned town, where I had managed to gather and store a myriad of utilitarian items, but my enemy would only appear in one place, and it is imperative that I am there when he does, which should be in six hours from now, according to the steady counting clock displayed to me.
I arrive in the town after only half an hour, having made timely progress. I must prepare.
The fog is soon lifted away by the ever-rising sun, and I as swiftly reminded of the task at hand. If I am to beat this enemy alone, which I fully intend to do, I must work swiftly to set their fate in stone. That means traps. Lots of them.
Keeping a mindful eye on the counter at the bottom-right of my vision, I set to making the terrain perfectly attuned to my needs. First I explore the area so I know all the places to hide and dodge to, then I get to work on pre-set scenarios which will spring the fight to my favour.
With minutes to go, I am in position. Excitement sparks my halo to life, but I regain composure and the calm sets in, the calm I feel just before a fight like this. A thunderous noise echoes through the ghost town as the portal opens. I alone bear witness to the monstrosity that steps out. Not a ghost, no, a full-fledged demon lord. He brings no visible company, but I am well aware of the likelihood he will be able to summon allies at will. Our battle begins.
I rush forward, locking my strong Songrem jaws around his forearm. Close combat is regrettable but unavoidable. My horns sing as I am whisked through the air, the colossal being of pure darkness flinging me to and fro. Finally I release my grip, and carefully alight on top of a building’s roof, checking my balance. Since I have no magical prowess, it could prove fatal for me to retain too much damage. The demon makes as if to swing, but an explosion of rapidly winding weeds engulfs his arm. Just because I have no powers of my own doesn’t mean I can’t utilise pre-made potions.
The fight continues in this manner for a good while. I use the sphere to keep myself protected, but taking on such a skilled and strong enemy as this is taking its toll; I can feel fatigue grip me despite my resolve.
Slashing at his armour, hoping to drive him back, I see my attacks have negligible effect. He swipes a talon at me, and I barely leap away before he comes in with another fist. I slide underneath, moments prior to contact, and feint with the halo of electricity on my tail. It would never do any damage as it is merely a visual characteristic, but he falls for it and withdraws, leaving an opening, I snap in, crunching down hard on his joint and earning a chilling yowl of pure feral agony in response.
Both of us heavily injured, I seize the opportunity to twist through the air, making use of my superior agility to disarm him, though it seems each weapon I rob him of is replaced by another. A falter in his movements courses hope through my being, and with newfound vigour I mercilessly take no leave of my assault. One again, he swipes at me, though I dodge back, anticipating the attack. Instead of going in for another punch however, this time he smacks me straight out of the air, badly winding me.
I stumble to my feet, stunned, gasping, writhing in an ineffectual state of ineptitude. Just before he can add a finishing blow, I use the last of the sphere’s power to recover, and rush at him with everything I have, noting he must be at half the state of health he was in earlier.
It is, however, in vain. Too late I realise my fatal blunder as our surroundings quickly change, like warm clay the scenery melds into a nightmarish land. Out of my peripheral, I catch sight of movement, and panic – How could I not have foreseen this? Minions cloud around me like a swarm of insects, and the horrifying countenance of one rushes up to my own. Stumbling over my own paws I am helpless to do anything as that visage snaps at me.
GAME OVER. I slowly reach a paw up and take off my pair of Virtual Reality glasses. It seems not even a week of practice could allow me to take on that boss alone. Perhaps with more character training, I’ll be able to avoid that black end screen.
