Their Relationships:Sebastian MichaelisAcheron met Sebastian before he met anyone else. On the streets, abandoned by whomever his parents were before - he couldn't remember them; he was just a pup, after all - he ran into a large, white RPW with crow's wings. He stared up at the figure, fright flashing through his tiny body. "S-s-s-sorry," he stuttered out, shivering making his words fracture further.
Sebastian looked down at him, a blank slate for an expression. "Hello," he purred, voice low and oddly calming with his slight British accent. "Who're you, little bat?"
"N-n-n-not a bat!"
He smiled, flicking his tail. The undulating black magic that swirled around it was ominous under the street-lamp's glare. "Well, that doesn't answer my inquiry, does it?"
He swallowed nervously, noticing how much smaller he was from the elder. "Acheron. Who're you?"
He gently placed a paw on the youngster's head. "My name is Sebastian Michaelis. I work for Earl Ciel Phantomhive, who has sent me out at this absurd hour to buy him a package of the finest brie cheese." He shook his head, removing the paw from the child's scalp. "Honestly, serving my master does get tiring sometimes...but it will all be worth it in the end." His fangs glinted in the dim light as he smiled.
Acheron stared up at him, and could've sworn he saw the elder's eyes flash magenta. When he looked again, they were the normal red shade they had been before. With a frown, the youngster looked up at him. "You have money?"
"Why, of course. Serving an Earl, funding has never been a problem."
"Buy me food?"
"My, what a demanding glutton you are," he said, that flash of magenta coming again into his eyes. As he bent over to look into Acheron's eyes, he realized his mistake. The young one's body wasn't much - skin and bones, sticking out rigidly through his patchy fur. His eyes were dull. He was clearly malnourished, panting for relief. "Ah, my apologies - you are quite the opposite of a glutton. Would you like a hot meal?"
He nodded wordlessly, feeling a tad bit uneasy at the closeness of the elder.
Sebastian straightened back up, tugged his jacket to remove the wrinkles, checked his pocket-watch, and trotted off, calling behind him, "Keep up, please."
Acheron did as requested.
Mami TomoeMonths later, Sebastian dropped Acheron off at the doorstep, straightening the bow he'd given the boy and making sure the hat was solidly upon the younger's head, hiding his ears. "Remember - you are to be polite. You do not speak unless spoken to. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, S-S-S-Sebastian."
"If this woman allows it, I shall help rid you of that stutter, little bat," he said, a smile on his face.
The door creaked open, and a wolf with golden curls stared out. "Greetings, Michaelis. What might I do for you?" The hat perched atop her head had a feather sticking out of the top, and the necklace around her neck was written in a strange language.
Sebastian straightened up, not missing a beat as he stepped forward and gently pulled Acheron with him. "This is Acheron. He is looking for lodgings more appropriate than the Earl's estate."
Mami smiled, a knowing look crossing over her features. "Ciel's tired of him already? I'm sorry. I can tell you're fond of the boy."
Sebastian's stoic expression did not falter as he responded. "My duty is to my master, and him alone. Whatever he orders me to do, I do without question."
"And he's ordered you to kick the boy out?"
"Yes."
Mami nodded, removing her hat and hanging it on the rack by the door. "I'll gladly take him off your paws. How long should I hold him for?"
"As long as need be."
"Ah, so Ciel's not changing his mind, eh?" Mami smiled as she reached out a paw to Acheron. "Pleased to meet you, little one! My name is Mami Tomoe. Please, call me Mami."
Acheron nodded. "M-m-m-my name is Acheron."
"What a lovely name!"
"I'm named after Hell, actually."
Mami's smile stayed the same, but her tone faltered. "What?"
Sebastian smirked, his features twisting devilishly. "Acheron is the river which Dante must cross to enter Hell in the epic,
Dante's Inferno. Surely such an intelligent wolf such as yourself has read such a gorgeous piece of literature."
Mami nodded slowly, taking this information in with a befuddled glance at Sebastian. "I see. Please, Acheron, go inside now, alright? Hang your hat by the door and wait for me in the kitchen."
Acheron nodded and scurried inside.
Mami stepped closer to Sebastian. "Michaelis - you didn't name him, did you?"
He chuckled. "No, of course not. What kind of butler would I be if I had named a child such a cursed name?"
Mami nodded in agreement. "Not a very good one, that's for sure. He introduced himself to you as that?"
"Yes."
"Fine, then. Can I expect you to come by and pick him up again in the future?"
"Probably not," Sebastian declined, trotting down the stairs to the dirt road. He called behind him, "I may come by from time to time, but I shall not be a guardian to him in the near future."
Mami nodded. "So be it. Thank you for allowing me to take control, instead of doing what you wished with him." Her gaze turned cold as she glared at him.
Sebastian chuckled. "Why, Ms. Tomoe - you insinuate I meant to eat the poor child!"
"Precisely," she said under her breath.
Sebastian heard her perfectly. His chuckling stopped as he stared at her, an icy expression on his face to match hers. "What do you know that you're not revealing, Ms. Tomoe?"
She scoffed. "You're not what you appear, Michaelis."
"Oh? And what precisely do you believe me to be, Ms. Tomoe?"
"Demon."
He smirked, his fangs sliding down over his bottom lip. "Quite observant. You aren't what appearances indicate either, Ms. Tomoe."
"And what exactly does that mean?"
"You're a witch."
Mami stiffened. "If you ever call me that again-"
"It wasn't a lie, was it, Ms. Tomoe?"
She didn't answer.
"Just as I thought. The boy will be safe in your care." He nodded, still smirking. "I sincerely hope you have a good year, Ms. Tomoe. Hopefully fate does not cross our paths again."
"I wholeheartedly agree, Michaelis." She waited to go inside until he'd left, and she could no longer see the pulsating magic flowing from his tail. She sighed. "That ridiculous prat," she muttered, trotting inside and locking the door behind her. She immediately spotted Acheron standing by the door to the kitchen.
He looked up, eyes bright at the smells in her house. "What s-s-s-smells so good, Ms. Tomoe?"
"It's Mami."
"What're you cookin', Mami?"
She smiled, ruffled the fur atop his head, and noticed for the first time his odd ears. "Are you part bat, little one?"
"No!" he said, growling. "I'm NOT a bat!"
Realizing she'd struck a nerve, she backed down. "Oh, I'm sorry - I didn't mean to hurt your feelings."
He sighed, staring at the floor. "It's okay," he muttered, his voice barely heard by the elder.
"Would a cookie and some tea help you feel better?"
He brightened up instantly. "You have cookies?!"
"That's what smells so sweet! Come, sit at the table - I'll get you one." She smiled as he dashed in and sat down, glancing happily about as his tail wagged.
This child is destined to have a good life - I can feel it in my bones.BallariBallari showed up in a rush. "I'm here to sign some papers?" she said flippantly.
Mami held them out to her, a concerned glint in her eyes. "You're the wife of Bronx?"
"Well, duh," she said, rolling her eyes. She shoved a paw out, a ring on her left paw.
"Oh, well, that's good! He called earlier, and said you'd be dropping by before I got to meet him. He sounded very pleasant. You must love-"
"I do. Gimme the pen."
Mami frowned slightly, but figured she was just in a hurry to get back to her job. Bronx had mentioned that Ballari worked full-time. She handed the pen over.
"I'm just happy I don't have to have any more myself. Four's good for me, thanks."
"Wait...you already have four children?!" Mami was incredulous. "My, how blest you both are!"
"I suppose you could say that," she muttered. "Trust me, the kid'll be well-taken-care-of. Bronx adores the little buggers - I just had them to make him happy."
Mami's look turned cautious. "Really?"
"Yeah. I don't really like kids, to tell you the truth. I'm not cut out to be mother material. I love Bronx, he loves me - that's all I need in life. Kids are sort of...a bonus, if you will."
Mami nodded slowly. "I can see where you're coming from with that. So...Bronx will be the primary caretaker?"
"Definitely. You wouldn't ever catch me with the rugrats."
Mami understood. "I see. What do you do for work that keeps you so busy, if you don't mind my asking?"
"Something I'm not cleared to tell you about." She finished writing everything down and handed the pen back to Mami. "My husband will be in later today. This is all I need to do, right? I can get back to work now?"
"Yes. If you've filled out both the front and back-"
"Yeah, I did that."
"Then you can leave - nothing more is needed of you."
"Excellent. Thanks for making this painless." Ballari smiled and saluted before literally bolting out.
Mami was happy she'd remembered to leave the door unlatched. She shuddered, thinking of what would've happened had Ballari ran straight into the closed door at the speed she'd run from her...
"Was that my new Mom?"
Mami looked down at Acheron. "Why, yes! She's very busy, though, so your new Dad will be over soon to pick you up. He'll be the one who cares for you."
He nodded. "Will I get to meet him?"
"Of course! You'll have a few hours to really get to know him, as will I."
"Great!" His tail wagged again, his eyes lighting up as a crooked smile flashed across his face.
BronxAcheron sat, staring up at the wolf who sat across from him at the table. The elder had a sincere smile on his features, and his hair flopped over one eye, covering it entirely. Acheron was inquisitive, so he asked a question right as Mami walked into the room with a tray of snacks. "Why do you want 'nother k-k-k-kid if you've got four already?"
Mami set the tray down and scolded him. "Acheron! It's not pleasant to ask such prying questions after you've just met someone!"
Bronx chuckled, grabbing a cookie. "It's fine. He's a boy - they naturally don't have a filter, anyhow. So, Acheron - why do you ask?"
"Just weird, that's all. I m-m-m-mean, Mami's got one kid. Sebastian has two. Then there's you - four kids, and you w-w-want ANOTHER one?"
Bronx smiled. "I love kids! You can never have too many."
"Your wife would disagree with you," Mami said under her breath.
Bronx's smile faltered. "Well, my wife just needs a little more convincing, is all. We're complete opposites, see - I'm very loving, hands-on, and I absolutely adore kids. My wife, well, being the opposite, she's very set-apart, prefers to be alone, and doesn't always see the joy in having children around. I'm sure her tune will change one day - perhaps when the kids are older."
"Then why take on another one who's so much younger than the rest?" Mami inquired, grabbing a cup of tea for herself as she sat down.
"Why did
you take him on?" Bronx fired back.
"An acquaintance of mine found him and could no longer care for him, so I opened my door and heart to this sweetie," she said with a glance over at the observant Acheron. "It was one of the best decisions I ever made."
Bronx nodded. "Then why do you believe me to want to take him off of your paws?"
"With all your kids...I honestly don't know," Mami said, rubbing her chin while in thought. "Perhaps you feel that, with your expert parenting skills, that you can take on another child and help his life to become better."
"You're not too far off. I believe highly in helping others and doing things for the greater good. Seeing that I adore children, the best thing for me to do, the thing I'm meant to do, is clearly with kids. I wanted to start my own foster care place, but after realizing my wife would've started pulling chunks out of her fur if I did that, I dropped the idea. Then, I thought...what if I just tried to take in foster children - not run an agency, but what if I just took in a few for a short period of time, changing the children out every few years when they were adopted out? Well, I realized...I'd just get too attached, and end up adopting each and every one of them! That certainly wouldn't work - not with our current house, and not with how my wife views the little ones. So, I scratched that idea. Then, I asked my wife - begged, really - for quite a few years, again, and again, and again, and again...every chance she was home, I was on her case about adopting just one more child. I told her of how Christina - our eldest girl - has been reclusive lately, and nothing has been able to get her out of her shell. 'If only,' I said to my wife, 'If only she had someone to play with.' To which my wife obviously responded with, 'What, the other three buggers? She's got pups to play with, Bronx!' And, well, I couldn't just let her win the conversation, now could I? 'Well,' I said, 'None of our beautiful children are like her. She needs someone just like her to feel accepted and welcome in this family.' My wife sighed, looked at me with an exasperated glance, and said, 'YOU are like her, Bronx! Just...fix her sadness and stop bugging me!'"
"Sounds like she doesn't want another kid," Mami said quietly. "Perhaps it's best if you don't adopt at this time, sir."
"Ah, I'm not finished," he said with a smirk, a glint in his eye. "After months more of prodding her, she finally relented...but not because of anything I said or did. She was out on an assignment-"
"Oh, what DOES she do for work? She never told us," Mami said with a polite tilt of her head as she set her teacup down.
"I'm not authorized to tell you," Bronx said, an understanding smile creeping onto his face. "Anyways, she was out on one of her assignments - one where she had to be outside a lot. She happened to have to chase - ahem, she happened to stumble upon an alleyway, and walking down it, she came across three orphaned wolves. She stared at them for a long time. None of them said anything. Then, she darted out, bought a baguette, and threw it down into the alleyway. Seconds later, the three pounced upon it, and my wife smiled to herself as she trotted home. It was then that she realized that not all pups have such a good life as we do, and I personally think that while she'll always have that hard exterior you've no doubt seen, she truly does have a heart for the better things in life. She really does her best to help others out, as long as her job gets done at the end of the day, that is."
"So what you're telling me is that she's turned over a new leaf?"
Bronx nodded. "She may not show it, but I know she's changed - I can tell. She's different now...more patient with the kids, and more willing to help me out around the house or run errands for things I need."
Mami nodded thoughtfully, taking another sip of her tea. "So, your wife will not care for Acheron. You will be the main caregiver. Do either of you have godparents?"
"No..." Bronx lost himself in thought. "We should do that, though - even for our other children. I'll be sure to talk that over with her as soon as possible."
"Please do, and get back to us on that." Wrapping up the meeting, Mami smiled and motioned towards the door. "We'll see you back here in a few days to have a follow-up."
A few days later, Bronx showed up again. "We've decided we'll get a godparent or two, but we don't know who yet."
"That's fine," Mami said with a smile. "You've got time to make a decision."
He nodded. "So...what's the next step in adopting Acheron?"
"Continue to come back. I'll ask him what he wants to do in two months."
"Two...two months?"
"Is that a problem?" she asked, her eyes baring into him, daring him to disagree.
"No, no...no, of course not." He gathered his things and got up to leave. "I'll be back next week."
He was.
And he came back the next week.
Twice the next week.
And five times each week he came back after that.
By the end of two months, Mami was sure that he was serious about adopting Acheron. She pulled the young one aside one day after Bronx had left. "Achie, how do you feel about going home with Bronx?"
"I like him! He's funny, really cool, and nice. I really, really like him."
Mami smiled. "So...you're okay with being adopted by him?"
"Sure...sometime in the future."
Mami looked at him closer. "Why are you mumbling, Acheron? Aren't you excited to go home with Bronx and his family?"
"I..." He looked down at the ground. "I don't wanna leave you."
Mami closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and then spoke once more. "Acheron...you know you can't stay with me forever, right? Bronx will be a perfect fit for you. He's devoted, loving...he wants to adopt you more than anyone on the planet! Out of all the wolves that have seen you over the past two months, hasn't Bronx been the nicest?"
"Yeah, b-b-b-but....I love
you, Mami. I don't wanna go."
Mami's heart broke in two. She felt it rip down the middle, and she had to take a few steps back to gather herself again. Thoughts flicked through her head too fast for her to properly separate and sift through them. Once she'd gotten her voice back, she responded very quietly. "Acheron...wait here for a few moments, alright? I'll be back." She turned and trotted up the stairs to the upper level of the house where Acheron wasn't allowed - for that matter, no one but Mami and Bebe were allowed upstairs. Bebe's bedroom as well as Mami's bedroom were up there, along with a bathroom and a smaller playroom. Mami knocked on her child's door. "Nagisa?" she called through the blockade.
The door didn't open.
"Bebe?"
Nagisa opened it, her hair tangled and filled with glitter. "Mami! Wanna help me style my hair? Sayaka gave me glitter bombs!"
Mami was so shocked, she cracked up laughing. "Oh, Bebe - you sweetie. I can't play right now, but later, okay?"
"Okay!"
"I came here to ask you something, Bebe," Mami said, entering and closing the door behind her with a soft click of the latch. "Are you busy?"
"No, my glittering can be put on hold," she said, still grinning ear-to-ear. "What's up?"
"How would you feel about having a little brother?"
"ANOTHER ONE?!" she yelped with glee. "Really?! I'd love to have a baby brother! Is he like me? Does he have no family?"
Mami smiled as she rested a paw atop Nagisa's head. "Yes, Bebe. He's just like you."
She smiled, cheering out in Japanese, "
なぜ、それは素晴らしいです!どのように素晴らしいです!"
Mami chuckled. "Yes, it is wonderful. Please try to speak in English around Acheron, however - he doesn't know Japanese yet."
She frowned and tilted her head, an inquisitive look flashing across her features. "
真美は、私は彼を教えることができますか?"
Mami laughed, patting her on the head before standing. "Of course you may teach Acheron. I'm sure he'd love to learn." Before she walked out of the room, she called back, "
ベベは、私はいつもあなたを愛します。."
The younger laughed. "Thank you, Mami! I mean, uh, どうもありがとうございました。."
Mami left, closing the door and trotting down the stairs to Acheron. "Acheron? I'm going to have a talk with Bronx. We'll see if we can get you to stay here - permanently."
Just as Mami promised, she called Bronx up the next day and explained the situation.
With a tinge of sadness to his voice, Bronx responded back, "Well, if the squirt doesn't want to leave, then by all means, let him stay there with you! I don't want him to do anything he doesn't wanna do. Besides, you're a great mother-figure, Mrs. Tomoe-"
"Please, call me Mami," she interjected.
"Ah, well, Mami - you're a great mother to Nagisa, obviously - she's so well-behaved, and all...and, perhaps it's not yet time for me to take on another child. As much as I want to, well...perhaps this is just a sign that it's not meant to be right now. Thanks for your patience, and you giving me a chance to come and visit. You wouldn't mind if I set-up some playdates between my children and yours in the future, would you?"
"No, of course not!" Mami said with a smile. "I think Acheron would love to spend some time with you again."
"What of that paperwork? Do I need to come by and decline everything?"
"No - I'll just burn or shred them. If you won't go through the adoption, I'll burn or shred both your paperwork and your wife's paperwork after a month. Is that alright?"
"Sure. If you ever have any pups that you're
absolutely sure you don't want, please, feel free to give us a call."
"I won't hesitate to do that. Have a good day, Bronx, and thanks for understanding."
"Thank you, Mami. Have a great day."
Nagisa "Bebe" MomoeAcheron raced up the stairs, happy to be getting his own room next to Bebe! He knocked on her door, and waited for her to open it.
She did so, and the moment she laid eyes on him she smiled, throwing her paws around him. "You're my new brother!"
He laughed and hugged her back. "I'm Acheron. You're Bebe, right?"
"Nagisa - only Mami calls me Bebe."
"Oh, it's like her nickname for you?"
"
ああ、そのような何か。"
Acheron blinked in confusion. "What?"
"
だから申し訳ありません!私は忘れてしまった - 真美あなたが日本語を知らなかったと述べました。 I mean, uh, sorry! I forgot - you don't know Japanese, do you?"
"No...why would I?"
"Mami knows Japanese, and so do I. I thought every RPW knew it."
"Oh, um, no...I don't know any RPWs who know it."
Nagisa nodded. "I see. Well, do you want to learn?"
"Sure!"
Nagisa smiled. "Let's start!
さぁ行こう!"
Bronx -
Acheron has a great appreciation for Bronx, the lovable, cool dude. The youngster loves going over to his house to play with his kids and just hang out with Bronx, who's always happy to have the little dude over. Bronx will never turn down any wolf who comes to him for help - he's a real softie - so whenever Acheron wants a playdate, he's never turned down by Bronx. He's as welcome in that house as he is in his own with Mami, so he doesn't mind going over and spending time with Bronx at all.Ballari -
Acheron doesn't know much about Ballari, seeing as she is rather distant due to her job. Ballari is rarely at home - and when she is, she's either sleeping, eating, or busy training in the basement, where all the children are prohibited from going into. Whatever job she's got, Acheron is sure it's important, so he does count himself grateful for even getting to meet Ballari - but he know he'll never be as close to Ballari as he is to Mami. He's okay with that, however - he knows Ballari has her heart in the right place. She's started to show a little more affection, and has started to joke around with the kids a little more, so Acheron's been enjoying what little company she's given to him when he's over at their house for playdates.Mami -
Acheron loves Mami. Being the first mother-figure he'd ever truly had, the two get along very well. Mami looked out for him and cared for him for as long as she had him, and when Bebe was adopted, Acheron got along with her as well. Acheron has the utmost affection for Mami, and counts her as the most kind wolf on the planet. Giving, caring, and loving, Mami is the perfect mother to Acheron. Seeing as the young one doesn't get into too much trouble, discipline hasn't really been a problem - but Mami has put down rules, and if those are broken, Acheron knows that she will do whatever she's stated she'll do for the consequence. Acheron doesn't doubt Mami's superiority, and respects her as his real mom. He counts her as the main influence for how he wants to be in life, and will never hate her, no matter how stubborn she can be on some things that he wishes she wasn't, such as bedtimes and not eating snacks every hour of the day. Acheron knows that Mami means well, and thus does his best to not complain when she states that he must do something. Ultimately, Acheron adores Mami for her giving soul, and he will never stop loving her until the day he dies.Nagisa -
Acheron's teacher and sister, Nagisa is a bubbly wolf who loves to have fun. Acheron loves her personality and her down-to-earth way of looking at things. He'll often hang out with her, and they tend to get into trouble together - but nothing to serious that they can't easily get themselves out of, of course!Sebastian -
Acheron has a great appreciation for Sebastian. While at times he feels uncomfortable around the odd wolf, he really does love the big guy. He counts himself as lucky to have ever run into him. Their relationship isn't as strong as one would expect, what with Sebastian always being busy running errands for the Earl (and Mami's apparent dislike of the elder wolf), but Acheron will never forget the wolf that took him in and fed him when no one else had pity for such a lost soul.Their Halloween Traditions Together:One of Acheron's favorite Halloween Traditions is one that Mami invented to bring the young ones happiness during the holiday. Basically, each family member first writes down something that they're happy about during that time of year - these are then set aside to look at for the next year. Then, he/she writes down something that he/she thinks the whole family will enjoy doing. All of these latter papers are mixed up, and each year a different wolf picks one of the options. Whatever option is chosen is the one which the whole family does to celebrate the holiday!
Sebastian knocked on the door, and waited, straightening his jacket and checking his watch.
Mami peered through the keyhole, wondering how she could possibly shoo the demon from her porch. Before Mami could respond to Sebastian's knocking, Acheron came barrelling down the hallway and skidded around the corner. "It's time! It's time!"
Mami smiled, deciding she'd leave Sebastian out there to deal with the disappointment in his own way. "Sure. Let's start! Is Bebe ready?"
"Here!" Nagisa said, trotting over and leaning her head against Mami's leg.
"Good. Let's begin!"
The family gathered around in a circle, each pup holding a plastic trick-or-treating bag resembling a jack-o'-lantern. In the middle of the circle was a pile of white paper, pens, pencils, and markers.
Mami spoke. "Welcome to the fifth annual Gathering of the Family of Like-Minded Individuals for the Rights of All Wolves to be Happy, Sincerely Pleased, and Full of Candy - also known as the GOFOLMIRAW-HASPAFAC!"
The children laughed at her joke, which always changed every year she did this with them.
"As per the tradition, set your buckets down and pick up a piece of paper."
The pups did as instructed.
"Now, write down one thing that you are thankful this year - make sure to put the date at the top! Then, on a separate piece of paper, write down one thing you want to do next year for Halloween."
The children both became quiet as they thought about what to write.
"Now, for the paper you've set aside - we'll put them all in the memory box for next year to look back at. Take another piece of paper, and write down one thing you think we should do
this year for Halloween."
Everyone did as commanded, and even Mami grabbed one and wrote something down.
She nodded. "Everyone done? Now, put all the papers in the middle, and mix them up!"
The pups leapt in, mixing up the papers.
"Acheron? Since you're the youngest, you choose this year."
He smiled, closed his eyes, and spun in a circle. When he landed, he reached out his paw to the left. The piece of paper he touched first he pulled over. He opened his eyes, and read it aloud. "Who can carve a scary pumpkin the fastest?"
Mami smiled. "Well, it's a good thing the pumpkin patch is still open. Let's go!"
What always cheers them up?: Acheron is always cheered up by listening to his favorite music or learning something new. With Nagisa teaching him Japanese, there is always something new to inquire about and thus learn; and when Nagisa doesn't have anything for him, Mami's always got something new to teach him.
