Lab Hazard #3 [Winner!]

Hazard Cats are long legged felines with quite a few robotic qualities.
Their tails are about the length of their body, split into two pieces,
and connected by some form of energy. The glass screens on their
chest are most commonly known to show a heartbeat, but many other
glowing images can appear there. These images mirror the cat’s
health in one way or another. Some cats have static on their screens,
but beware, those cats are as dangerous as they are rare! The picture
on the screen will always match the color of the cat’s eyes, which
typically have hollowed pupils. Hazards have three eyes, but the center
one is almost always covered with a band-aid or something similar.
This is because of the often dangerous powers that are channeled
through the third eye. Grates on the cats’ sides aid in breathing and
can also emit a steam, sound and mist, as well as a strange goo.
Their large ears allow them to hear potential prey miles away and make
them skilled trackers, but they are easily overwhelmed by too much
noise. Thanks to their strong legs, Hazard cats can reach speeds up to
fifty miles per hour and leap near ten feet up.

What's going on?
A long time ago, so long ago that Roxy couldn't remember herself, some of the lab workers had decided that she was the perfect specimen for their experiment. An experiment to see if just a regular cat could somehow harness the power of a Hazard Cat's third eye. After much experimentation and much pain on Roxy's part, the final test was initiated. They forced open Roxy's improvised third eye, located on her lower back, and she remembered seeing something bright, blue-white, glowing in front of her. She had realized dimly that it was actually coming from inside of her eye, beaming out. She remembered the astonished and terrified faces of the scientists, then the light consumed everything else until Roxy watched it all fade to night.

She woke with a pounding headache, watery eyes, and a small voice in her ear. "Where am I? Are you okay?" Roxy opened her eyes to see a ghostly. glowing face staring at her. It flicked its long ears and repeated, "Are you okay?" Roxy nodded numbly, The... thing looked at her inquisitively. "Something happened, and now I'm here. But so are you. And it looks like something exploded in here." Roxy looked around, noticing for the first time the destroyed beakers, now shards on the floor, the ripped carpeting, the charred black spots on the walls and floors that seemed to spiral out and away from her. Roxy turned back to the ghost-thing and watched as its screen of sorts filled with static. As if forcibly, the Hazard cat (if it was what Roxy assumed it was) exhaled through its grate (it must be, if it had a grate) and Roxy watched as the static settled itself into a calm spiral. "I'm Jynx. Who are you? And what even happened here?" Jynx asked, their three black eyes blinking at her disconcertingly. Roxy shook her head in confusion.

"I-I'm not sure. I can't seem to remember." Jynx nodded sadly.

"That can happen if you try to use too much of your power at once. Although you don't have any other Hazard Cat things, do you? Did they do some sort of experiment?" Roxy shook her head again.

Jynx paced decisively a couple inches above the floor. "That must be it. They tried to make you have powers when you clearly shouldn't. Cruel! Oh my," Jynx suddenly gasped as their eyes locked on Roxy's back.

Roxy craned her head around, looking for the cause of alarm. Jynx swooped down immediately as Roxy saw what the scientists had done. Where should have been fur and flesh, there was a hollow with a panicked-looking black eye. "This is unacceptable. To injure a cat for their own greed and curiosity? How DARE they!" The spiral on Jynx's screen swirled furiously. She directed Roxy to the bandages and Roxy placed one carefully over the now-closed eye. "You might never have powers with that. And if you do, they're going to be extremely unstable. Don't take the bandage off, okay?" Roxy nodded.

"I'm Roxy," she said, raising her head and smiling with gratitude, happy for the first time in a long time. Jynx grinned back.

"I think there might be a chance of other problems arising later. Is it okay if I stay with you, so that we can figure this all out? I don't think either of us really have anyone else to turn to, anyway." Jynx laughed nervously, and her screen flickered for a second.

Roxy nodded. "Thank you, Jynx."

What's going on?:

He'd known it was kind of a bad idea to enter the cemetery, especially without any sort of blessed charm to ward off spirits. He should've listened to the guy with the weird gloves to get something to protect him from demons. And then it attached itself to him.
It'd bound itself to his spirit and hid in his shadow as he explored the cemetery and then went home, and only really made itself obvious when he'd made it inside, and hell broke loose as it proceeded to knock at least four glass objects off various counters within reach.

Chaos attempted to ward the creature off, but it refused to leave, so after a while he just accepted it and tried to ask what its name is. It did not remember its name, and so it asked him to give it one. He named it Carnival. It later picked up on using she for itself once it was capable of remembering just a bit of who it used to be. Carnival is now Chaos' 'roommate' of sorts, attached to his shadow. She can only go a certain range from Chaos, but can also "shadow hop" as long as Chaos is in the vicinity and she can return to his shadow. She would vanish if she were detached from his shadow without a way to reattach (such as him going someplace else and there being no shadows to hide within).

Res with either;
-a dead hazard cat has possessed this poor kitty's body
-living cat owed another hazard cat something or other, but said hazard cat died and now haunted living cat

What's going on?: That this was basically a transmutation of sorts. An attempt to merge 2 souls together into one body. How successful that was? Well you can tell by the picture. The fact that they have 2 different colored eyes is the refection of this merge, as the cat originally had 2 blue eyes and the hazard 2 brown. The hazard side of him is a illusionist, frustrated by the fact that he can no longer harness his 3rd eye ability, and he truly believes he's imprisoned there. Felis, the cat side, on the other hand is curious and adventurous, eager to explore and try to understand everything that a cat could. This has all caused a sort of split personality sure to the unsuccessfulness of the experiment.

User; nerd.
Name/s;Charlie and Cind
Gender/s;Male and Genderless
Whats happening?!;It had been out of its control, Cind had been part of an experiment previously which had managed to remove it entirely from its body and turn it into some sort of spirit hazard combo thing. It was not impressed. Whats worse is that now some dern voodoo magic was going on in a mixture with science to attach it to a cat, a normal cat! Charlie was his name, or thats what Cind had gotten, Charlie couldnt see it yet, at least he couldnt until the madmen attached his spirit to the cats own. They were now more or less one being, Cind labelled itsself as a guardian whereas Charlie only seemed to grimace and call it an unwanted roomie that couldnt let him be. The initial plan was to see if hazards and their power, including the third eye, could be fully transferred into a regular cat but this clearly hadnt happened. Cind was still a spirit with bad jokes just attached to Charlies being, they had not become one in sense of physicality.,it is unknown if Cind has the physicality or power to possess Charlies body, since Charlie is a normal cat its unlikely since he wouldnt be able to handle the power of the third eye without possessing one himself

Crumb, the cat
"Mother Cat", the phantom

What's going on?:
There was a storm that night.

The pitter-patter of the steady rain echoed throughout the entire premises. Jim Dorwin, his head resting on his desk, had fallen asleep after a long day's work in the laboratory. The rain had aided this slumber, it's calm, but restlessness sound like a lullaby in his ears, as he drifted off into the abyss of dreams

It did not, however, lull the feline across the room to sleep. For the small creature sat, eyes fixated at the window just inches above his head. From there, he could watch the drops of rain as they fell, rolled, and splashed, like great tears of melancholy from some gargantuan beast in the clouds.

His eyes seemed electrified as the blue sheen from the windowpane wafted over his upturned face, and the odd trace of what seemed to be a smile- if a cat could indeed grin- slowly emerged from his serious features. For he was awaiting his friend; she had promised to be there, that night. She knew how to unlatch the cage he sat huddled in, and, together, they would retreat to the mercy of the cloudburst.

"When the rain comes." She had said. "I can smell the coming storms in the air, and I'll arrive with it when the sun sets."

So where was she? He felt his heart flutter in his chest with every slight, small sound, as his anticipation grew. Every squeak from the rats in the neighboring office was her pushing a door open, every creak was her footstep in the hall, and every snore from the sleeping Jim Dorwin startled him as he waited.

His smile melted, his face worried as the minutes past by. But he needn't fear too long... for soon she came, as if formed from the shadows that hid the corners of the office from his sights.

It was his mother, or who he always saw as his mother; the cat was tall and lean, her black fur slick from the dampness of the rain, and her eyes blue, wide, and vibrant. She was not a normal cat, for the unmistakable grate of a hazard was at her side, and the screen on her chest glowed a peaceful blue. It calmed him instantly to see he odd feline who, as a child, he had snuggled close to, as told him stories and comforted him in his sorrows... supported him in his hopes.

She came and quietly, with a swift movement of her paw, lifted the latch, letting him leap to join her on the floor.
They exchanged no words, only one quick glance, as they slipped past the sleeping Jim Dorwin, and, after a quick run down a hall, vanished into the rain outside.

. . .

Jim Dorwin awoke as a ray of sun slipped in through the small window. As the man slowly sat up, his eyes, squinted and heavy from sleep, quickly traversed the room as they adjusted. He could just make out the shape of the cage across from him, and, in it, the sleeping form of a tom cat. He then turned to look back at the papers of his desk, again reading the words he had read the day before.

Registered Lab #22 will be terminated due to research no longer benefiting the general public.

This was the final sunrise he would see on the premises, and he smiled at the thought of it as he let the paper fall back on the desk. This lab had been a dying business for sometime, and it was a relief to imagine that he'd soon be kissing goodbye to the horrid place.

He looked again at the caged cat as he mentally celebrated this happy occasion. That cat had always been a strange one. They had brought him to the facility as a hungry, bony kitten off the streets. Being one of the late arrivals, few tests were done on him, although in the few he had he had always been oddly cooperative, and almost never fearful on the needles and cages he had to face. Despite trying not too grow to fond of the cat, Jim still liked him. He figured he would, perhaps, take the tom along with him that day as the facility closed it's doors for a final time. Why not?

Why not indeed...

. . .

The cat lay sleeping in his cage again, fur oddly dry despite his adventure out into the rain. His mother cat had returned him safely back, informing him that everything would be alright, and that he'd leave behind the cages and needles sooner than he might think. He was always curious as to how she always seemed to know things, and get them right almost every time. So he happily awaited in his cage for the oncoming freedom, unaware as he slept of Jim's awakening and preparations to leave.

That is, until the cage was suddenly jolted as Jim lifted it from the table. The cat scrambled to wake up, startled by this new jostling, only to discover that the cage had covered over with a blanket. All he could make out through it were shapes, shadows and light. And for a brief instant, he began to panic.

But mother cat would not let her child panic when there was no need. In an instant, it was as if the sleek black feline was curled up next to him, despite him seeing nothing, and he could hear her whisper in his ears "Relax... your going home."

He relaxed. Mother cat was always right. And he did not seem to mind that she was not actually there as he curled back up in a ball, and reentered sleep.

. . .

It had been several weeks, and the cat, named "Crumb" by Jim, was living a new, quiet life, far away from the harms of the laboratory. Every morning, he'd have cream and cheese with Jim, and then go out for a stroll in the yard. He's chase birds, and bees, and lizards, things he had missed out on every since the facility took him in. He could not catch them, for he was clumsy and not fast enough, but it was fun all the same.

And yet, at night, as he returned indoors and sat on his new cat bed by the window, he'd gaze out into the street. He'd watch, and listen, and hope to see mother cat's sleek form appear out of the fog, or the shadows, in rain or in shine...

But mother cat would not come.
And although he was happy with his new life at first, he felt a sadness creep over him.
And as night after night passed with no mother cat to explore with, hear stories from, or chase fireflies with, he felt himself loosing all energy and joy to do anything. That is, until one night, as he sat watching for her out the window, he had a thought.

For across the house, across the street, right before his eyes, was the forest he had formerly explored nightly with the mother cat.
The laboratory could not be too far after all, and, perhaps, he could go to her.

. . .

Crumb's journey to the forest did not take long, and, within a few hours, he found himself at the gates of the laboratory, and quickly slipped in under the barbwire, headed for the abandoned facility. He was afraid, yes, but he was comforted by his soon to be meeting with his mother, and so he ignored his fears and entered through a carelessly left open door.

As he drifted through the halls in search, he could soon feel the presence of another beside him. Still walking, he looked up, to see Mother Cat, her eyes staring ahead of them, was walking beside him.

"Mother Cat." Crumb mumbled, as he stared at her in the relief, but kept walking. "Why didn't you come all the way home with me?"

"I am not like you." She responded, her eyes still focusing ahead, but on nothing in particular. "I cannot leave."

"Then I'll stay with you!" Crumb exclaimed.

"No, you will not."

The two kept on in silence, and Crumb noticed the door he'd entered in was their destination.
She was leading him back out.

. . .

They headed out into the forest. Crumb watched Mother Cat steadily, unnerved by her steady forward gaze. It was as if she was trying to avoid his eyes...

She stopped the second they reached the edge of the woods, and, finally looked at him.

"Now go back."

"I won't."

"Go, child"

"But I miss you!"

"Please, go, it is best!"

Mother Cat reached out her long, black paw and shoved him beyond the forest's boundary. But to her surprise, he sunk his teeth into her arm, pulling her with him beyond the edge of the wood.

A strange thing happened then. For Crumb, his brown eyes fixed with determination, suddenly felt a pain in his face, circling his right eye and causing him to loose his grip on his Mother's paw. And Mother Cat, who appeared quite clear in the forest, began to change, and her shape seemed to fade.

As Crumb rubbed his aching eye in confusion, he did not notice her steady, ghostly transformation. The pain grew, like a hot, burning iron, and then, as he began to whimper in pain, it was gone in an instant. He looked back up then. Mother Cat had vanished. It was just him, and his shadow, his deep black shadow, tall and lean like the cat he had come to see.

. . .

Jim Dorwin was surprised to find Crumb outside at morning, mewling and screeching at his front door like a wild animal. He had been worried to find his adopted cat missing, and it was certainly not like the calm, peaceful cat to act in such a way.

But he was even more shocked when he saw Crumb's eyes when the cat looked up at him. For, his right eye, which had once been a deep brown, had turned an electric blue.

After some thought, however, Jim was soon no longer worried. It was probably a side effect of the experiments at the lab.
And he did not notice Crumb growing interest in his shadow, nor the shadow's odd consistency, when when a light source was not sufficient to produce such a shadow.

And that night, when it rained and Jim Dorwin was asleep, like at the beginning of his tale, he did not hear the whispers of the two cats.

The one, small and calico, with wide, odd colored eyes.
And the other, tall and lean, and gleaming in a ghostly light.

By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
