Personality: When you first meet Bandit, he can come off as a little full of himself, but when you get to know him better, that’s really not the case. He’s really just testing you to see how you react. In order to gain his trust, you have to be loyal and willing to get in a little trouble for a lot of fun. He often likes to sneak away from his stable, but he’d never desert his owner and friends. Sometimes, Bandit likes to gossip, but he’d never start a rumor. He just loves knowing everything about everyone. In addition, he loves watching the humans do martial arts, and wishes he could do them himself.
Story: Bandit turned and faced Lamani, his best friend and partner in crime. “Where we’re going, we can’t tell anyone about, got it?” The chestnut sabino mare nodded, and together, they rattled the old stall doors until they opened. Without a second thought, they both ran for the nearby cliff. It was still dark, and as they raced toward the cliff, the tiniest hint of light approached on the horizon. “Hurry, we’ll be late for the sunrise!” Lamani exclaimed, and sprinted ahead. Bandit stayed at a steady pace. “We can see the sunset from here, silly! There’s no need to hurry!”
Soon, they reached the edge of the cliff, rocks spraying over the edge, into the ocean below. They stood side by side and watched the sunrise. But oddly, as the sun appeared to grow in magnitude, it also came closer to them and dipped below the horizon. With growing curiosity, they realized wasn’t the sun, it was a ship. Lamani panicked, but Bandit decided to hold his own and see what the ship was doing in such dangerous waters. He stood for 5 minutes, oblivious to the fact that his friend had ran off back home. When the ship had docked, and the men dispersed, he decided that nothing interesting was going to happen and that he should just go home. “Come on, Lamani, let’s go!” he called out, thinking that she was nearby. When he heard no response, he started to panic. He’d never forgive himself if something happened to his friend.
He ran back down the hill, closer to the stables, sweeping the territory between the cliff and home. At last he found Lamani, walking away from the stables, a man cloaked by the darkness on her back. Her neck was held high and tensed and her ears were back, and Bandit sensed an aura of fear and anxiety coming from her. The man must have frightened her into submission and is riding her away to steal her! I’ve got to save her! In the silent protection of the darkness, Bandit trotted forward until he was a couple yards away from the prisoner. Then, having reviewed his options, he decided to go for it. After all those times he watched humans do Karate was finally paying off. Performing the horse equivalent of a roundhouse kick, Bandit reared up on his hind legs and smoothly swung around, his hoof knocking square in the thief’s jaw. The man slid off of Lamani and fell to the ground, not knowing what hit him.
Bandit was overcome with joy in knowing that his friend was okay. And as they cantered back to their stables wiggling the doors back into their places, they smiled at each other, knowing that the adventures in the cover of night were a test of true friendship.
