He's a quiet boy, very reserved, and shy. He's a little book worm, a total nerd honestly. He can be a bit of a coward, which he tries really hard not to be, because his father and mother are so brave. He just gets startled easily, and is a complete pacifist, so he isn't interested in fighting, even to defend himself. He's very intelligent, however, and has a lot of compassion and kindness if you're patient enough to worm your way past his shyness and get him to open up to you. He really dislikes how his fire makes him stand out in a crowd and draws attention to him, and wishes he could 'turn off' his fire like his mother and sister can.

He's close to his big sister Lulu, since they both inherited their mother's fire, and she's not as loud or bossy as his other sisters. He's very afraid of disappointing his father because of his pacifism and timid nature, so he tries not to interact with Lan-Long very much if he can help it, preferring his mother's calmer company. Because of his mother's influence, he'll become quite the gentleman. Because of the meaning of his name, Lan-Long gave him what he thought was a humorous nickname, Steam. Shui-huo doesn't particularly enjoy this nickname.
