First Touch
First Saddle"I walked out to Katten's pen, a saddle tossed over my back and a blanket under my arm. I plopped them down by the loading post, then turned towards her gate. I peered in, and much to my surprise she was no where to be found. The first time this had happened I went into a panic, but I knew better now. 'Get down Katten!' I snapped without even looking up. With a splash of drool and scattered hay she plopped down from her perch on the stall ceiling, where she liked to hide in waiting as if I were her pray. She wiggled happily and rocked on her feet, steadying herself. I shook my head and chuckled, tossing her a chunk of meat before clipping on a lead rope. I brought her out to the loading post and got her settled, praising her as much as possible before we got started. I tossed the blanket up on her back no problem, watching her enjoy the new 'toy'. When it came to the saddle, she jerked away grinning, thinking it was a game. It took a while before she stilled enough for me to plop it onto her back and strap everything in, but she went along with it quite nicely. She took the bit with ease and within a half hour she was completely tacked and rearing to go. I was fairly excited to ride her, knowing she would make it an interesting time to say the least."First Ride"A few weeks later, when Katten was far better trained and edging towards full size, I decided it was time to start riding her. I tacked her up as usual, and stood on the loading block to test my weight on her side. As expected she jerked away, and it took quite some time for her to come back and stand still again. She seemed to dislike the pressure and weight of the tack, and despite my lack of trust for the spazzy little girl I decided to load her up with bareback tack instead. With the simplistic bareback pad and rope lead, she calmed quickly and cared little when I scrambled up onto her back. She bucked slightly at the sudden change in momentum, but with easy praise she relaxed and moved forward. I led her around the pastures, taking every trail I could think of, and had a grand time exploring new places on the woodland property beyond the fences. Overall it was a surprisingly pleasant ride, and Katten proved to be a well-mannered mare - with the exception of a few spazztic bird chasing and dumping handfuls of mud on my head with her tail pranks. I got used to it eventually and learned to dodge the nonsense, but true to her nature, Katten always manages to come up with a new prank to keep things interesting."
