gaining their trust -
I came into my barn early in the morning to check on Maddie. All of her food was gone and she had a bit of water left. I went to get the food and opened the small barred window above her buckets to pour in her food. I went to the wash stall hose and brought it to Madison's stall. I hovered it above the water bucket and went to turn the hose. After I finished filling her feed and water buckets, I went into the tack room to grab a treat.
When I returned to her stall, Madison was awake. "Good morning girl," I said. "Today, I think I am going to take you out to the paddock. But first, I will need to gain your trust."
I opened Madison's stall door and stepped in, closing the door behind me. She backed away, so I held out the treat that I got out of the tack room earlier today. She looked at it, hesitant to move, she took a slow step forward. I reached my hand out farther, but she stepped back. After waiting for five minutes, Madison decided to take a few steps toward me. She took the treat out of my hand and let me pet her. "Good girl," I said. "Let's get you out to the paddock."
I lead Madison out to the paddock and locked the gate. I stood there for a while to watch her for a little while to see if she would open the gate door. She did, but I took her back to the paddock and this time, put an actual lock on the gate so that only I could get her out. She trotted over my way and nudged at my face. I pet her on the muzzle and left her in the paddock knowing that I could trust her and she could trust me.
