First Touch



"I walked around the trailer, getting a good look at my new boy. He was huge, to say the least. I flipped open the gate and stood back, giving him his space just in case he was a little panicky from the ride. He rushed out halfway and stopped. He turned his head back and fourth, flicking his ears angrily, and paused in my direction. I felt a little bubble of fear in my gut. Perhaps he wouldnt be the easy going gelding I had been told he was after all. It seemed odd for him to pause that long though, even if he was a little scared or even aggressive. Maybe something was wrong with him? My fear turned to concern, and I walked forward, ever slowly, toward him. His massive head and chest towered over me threateningly. He then leaned forward, huffing, ears pinned on my every movement. I turned my head away and reached my hand out toward him and tried to relax...and then I felt his hot breath graze my neck. I looked up and he proceeded to press his muzzle into the collar of my shirt, cuddling me affectionately. "Aw, you were just looking for some lovin, wernt ya boy?" I said quietly, rubbing his neck and lovingly rubbing my nose to his. He shook his head and walked all the way out of the trailer, turning to kick at the door as a final 'screw you' to the confinement, before resting his muzzle on my shoulder. It was obvious we had an instant bond, and I couldn't wait to see how it worked for us out on the track."

First Saddle

"It wasnt long before I felt Thensai was ready for a saddle. I made a special one for him, built to give the rider and the nera more of a close connection while riding. There wasnt much to it, so it was fairly easy to secure. My darling boy behaved perfectly, standing still and munching on his treats while I tested the stability of the leather. Once he seemed ready and comfortable I led him out of the gates into the corral and walked him around the circle a few times. I expected him to be at least a little concerned with the odd contraption on his back but it looked like he could care less. I showered him with affection before excitedly tying him to the loading post..."

First Ride

"I climbed up the wooden steps of the loading block and pulled the reins back tightly. Thensai shivered as the tasseled ends of the leather grazed his bare shoulder. I spoke softly, urging him to stay still, as I climbed the rest of the way up. He was much taller than my two girls, and it took all I had in me to jump up onto his back. After I was situated I leaned forward and stroked Thensai's neck, praising him. He shook his head and jerked forward, starting our little 'walk' out with a canter. I couldnt for the life of me get him to slow down, but I was able to control him easier than I had thought. I led him around the ring a few times, even urging him to go faster around the barrels, until he finally slowed to a walk. Panting I relaxed and began fidgeting with one of the saddle straps, not knowing that my big daring boy had set himself up a little agility course in his head, consisting of all the field fences in front of us. He surged forward at lighting speed and I gripped the front edges of the saddle so hard I though I would rip the leather in half. He jumped every fence I had all the way down to the woodland trail, and even then he decided to turn around and run his little 'course' again. It became pretty apparent that he was trying to buck me off casually, so he wouldnt get in trouble. That darn boy was too smart for his own good sometimes. I pulled up on the reigns as hard as I could, slowing him to a gentle trot. Once he was down to a walk I lead him towards the center of the ring where we had stared out, and made him stop long enough for me to get off. I couldnt really stay mad at him, but I wasnt going to let him get away with it either. I led him back to his stall and closed the gate, ignoring his silent pleas for a good pat and some treats. I went down the line, giving my other two girls all the attention and food they could bare, and then left the barn without even looking at my naught boy. The next morning, Thensai and I went out and tried again. Needless to say, he behaved."
