Delta Velorum Foxes are tall looking foxes that are only located on the remote planet of Delta Velorum.

Standing between 2 - 2 1/2 feet at the should, Delta Velorum Foxes are very tall in appearance compared to Red Foxes on Earth. They tend to be long legged in appearance and are well known for their endurance and agility. Males tend to be more muscular then females while female are more slender and elegant in appearance. A Delta Foxes fur tends to be very soft and short, and come in a wide variety of natural colors. It is not uncommon to see them in roans and dun colors similar to horses and are commonly seen in cat colors and patterns as well (such as calico, tabby, bengal markings ect). However the combination of colors and patterns are limitless, and each Delta Velorum Fox is different from the next. No two are ever the same in looks. Delta Velorum Foxes can come in any eye color and combination - no matter if it's natural or unnatural. A fox with two or more eye colors (known as Heterochromia) is uncommon but not unheard of.

INTRODUCTION

With the herd I
was called "the flame"
for my temper.
But you may not call me that.
To you, I am Cai.

I was a loner until I joined my herd
Up until then I didn't have a name.
I don't remember my parents at all
and
I certainly don't recall any litter mates.
I found my herd by following their tracks.
Never before had I even seen another fox.
But they where kind; they took me in.
They cared for the stranger with no name,
who could barely speak.
Taught him their ways and their words
and
in return I gave them my loyalty, my undying passion,
the skills that I had from living alone.
And gave me a name.

I have a temper.
A bad one.
Sometimes small insult is more than enough to trigger me.
And if I believe that you have wronged my friends
In any way great or small
I will kill you.
But I'm patient too.
Every hunter must be.
I can be careful as a thornbuck crossing stones on a stream.
I'm not afraid to die.

Moving day
I don't know who started the war, but I am loathe to finish it this way; heads down, tail tucked, and in retreat.
But our Alpha was dead and his successor was nothing less than a failure.
Many are saying goodbye to friends and family who will never make another journey; I have no one to bid fair well, and the only thing I own is the halter on my face.

So I wait beneath the spreading-leaves tree until we leave.
It was here that I was welcomed into the herd as a brother. Many who had been at my side in the first days where now in that eternal sleep that had claimed so many, so young.
I distract myself with the memories of the fallen until the sun has risen high in the sky river and everyone in the herd is prepared.

The Alpha calls out to start moving and on one accord we step out as though we are one huge defeated beast.
Out of practice I take up the rearguard. Carefully urging on some of the stragglers. I do not know where we are going. But if we are to survive, we must stay together.

I can not find them.
Would they leave me?
We stopped for the day and I went to hunt. I only found threadmice. But they would have been enough to feed a kit.
But they are not here.
Why would they leave me?
I drop the mice and sniff the hard flat ground. They where definitely here, the familiar scents cling to the dirt.
But another, fouler odor blows on the wind; it reeks of death and of rotten meat.
A chill runs down from my heart to my paws.
Then I scent something that freezes my blood: the scent of a herd fox mingled with that predator death.
Something inside stirs after seconds of a beatless heart.
Anger.
When I am angry, I am a killer, but I am also a fool.
I ran.
Towards the death scent.
I ran.
Towards a monster.
I ran
Towards something I couldn't hope to defeat.
I ran.

I should be dead.
It was a monster beyond my ken. Three times my size and much, much faster than I.
I would not be alive if it had not gorged itself upon my herd mates.
I used to account myself a warrior, now I only see a fool. I should have not let my temper control me.
But here I am now. Without protection from my herd, my dirt-crusted wounds many and painful.
I have but one choice.
I must move forwards.

Every breath is pain. Every step, agony.
The world around me does not exist, only the drive to keep moving.
If I stop, I fear I will not be able to begin again.
I must find my herd.
I must keep moving.
I stumble.
Cold, wet, soothing; washing around my shaking, aching legs.
Water.
My head dips forwards, I let my mouth hang open, water runs against my parched cheeks, I cannot command myself to swallow.
Legs giving way, whole dirty, sweaty, bloody, body in cool water. Cool, sweet, so sweet, water.
After a long time I haul myself out of the stream and struggle to firm ground.
I know I cannot continue for today.
But tomorrow.
Tomorrow I will find my herd.
