Blog Post One

I have just filled out the form for the new Guardian. The poor thing, which I have decided to call Alpha, has been through a factory fire, and has a fear of fire, according to the info I was given. I have decided to hide all of my candles and not light them for him. I'll keep him in a nice comfy room, with no fire or too bright lights to make sure he isn't scared. I'll train him myself, and I hope he will be comfortable here.

Blog Post 2
Yesterday, Alpha arrived! I was unable to write yesterday, nor did I get a very good look at him because it was rather dark. He wouldn't come out of the box at first, so I put guardian treats to lead him into his room. It took him a while to leave, but after much cautious consideration, he took all the treats, and went to sleep in his room. I closed the door halfway so if he felt the need to leave, he could. He sure needed some good people in his life.

Today, Alpha stayed in his room, finding it a nice place. He ate little, and slept mostly. He was very cute when he slept. Nothing much else happened.

Thursday, March 26
Blog Post 3

After a few days of getting Alpha to know me, and not lighting any candles, I decided to take Alpha outside to romp around without me. He's been outside before, but I've been with him every step he takes, except when he does his business. I took out the lanterns so that he doesn't get scared, even though it only looks like fire.

At first, Alpha was hesitant, giving me a questioning look. It seems he was able to give enough trust in me that he didn't go on his own. I tried to convince him with treats, food, love, petting, but he didn't want to go without me. Finally, I took a few steps onto the lawn, and he followed. Soon, we were running together, both of us excited, both of us racing. We played like this for many hours until it started to get dark.

I haven't been able to figure out how to rehabilitate him yet. I'll start tomorrow, maybe with Fire Gifs?

Saturday, April 11th
Blog Post 4

Whoa! Been so busy training this guy I forgot to blog about him! We'll start with what happened on March 27-28.

In the morning of the 27th, I kept it easy, taking him out to do his business, feeding him, playing with him. It was in the afternoon when I decided to start with the Fire GIFs. I already had my computer ready, I just needed Alpha. So, I called him.

He came in quickly enough, and began playing with one of the toys I brought for him. I turned on the computer, clicked the first simple fire Gif, and Alpha turned into a quaking ball of fear. I feel sorry for the poor guy, he was just so distraught, whimpering and such. I quickly went to a different page, but he still lay there, shivering. It seems we was really broken over fire, if a mere GIf if it reduced him to shaking.

I threw him a chew toy, and he slowly reached for it with his paw, and chewed on the toy, like he was finding comfort in it. He slowly stood up, and turned his back to the computer, and left, presumably hiding in his room. The toy went with him.

Well that went swimmingly, I remember thinking. He was truly afraid of fire, if even the sight of it scared him.

The next day, Alpha was his usual self again. He ate like normal, played like normal, and slept like normal. That was good. This time, I decided to try something. I took him to the sitting room, and we sat together on a chair, him chewing on something, me stroking him and speaking kind, soft words to him. With my other hand, I pulled up the same gif as last time, and placed it in a place where he could see it while continuing to stroke and comfort him with my words. At first, he tensed up and panicked like the day before, but do to my voice and/or the stroking, he didn't panic quite as much.

Today, about 3 weeks later, he's comfortable-ish around the GIFs, though still a bit nervous. I think I'll start him on actual candles tomorrow.

Tuesday, April 14th
Blog Post 5

Well, so much for candles. Though he had mostly adjusted to pictures, real fire just spooked him too much. On the 12th, I let him have a day off from fire. I figured he'd earned it. Yesterday, I tried him on a normal candle. At first, he didn't mind, probably since he couldn't see the flame. But when he saw it, and felt the warmth, first he did that freezing thing, but I was all the way across the room, so I couldn't blow it out immediately. As I was moving across the room, though scared mostly out of his wits, he barked and snapped at me until I blew it out. Then he was still somewhat aggressive until I took him outside to play. Best not let that happen again. Who knows what would happen if he bit me?
