Halcyone watched the foaming waves. The sky was clear and the ocean calm. Halcyone sighed heavily, her eye lids drooping as misery swam over her. She didn't understand why, but when ever she looked at this ocean...she felt so sad. So sorrowful. As though someone close to her just died.
Halcyone sighed sadly. She was always curious to why the ocean made her feel like that...if she went to any other ocean, she felt normal and happy.
Before she became lost in thought, Halcyone turned her head to face the cave looming at the end of the beach. Unlike the rest of the beach that was littered with sandcastles, the area by the cave was smooth and untouched. Seagulls staying to the south of the beach and never flying close to the cave.
That was another thing Halcyone didn't understand. The cave. Also knowing as Forgotten Land Cave. The name was given to it by the small village close to the beach. Mostly because no one went near it, no plants grew near it and no animals or birds went near it. However many people said it was just because they had no reason to, so they went to explore the cave but ran away when they claimed to hear quiet sobbing and a unknown wave of fear. So many began to say the cave was haunted by the ghost of a girl who drowned in the ocean.
Halcyone shut her eyes, allowing the soft ocean breeze to roll over her body. Perhaps she should see for herself if the stories are true? About the sobbing...
After a mini debate in her head, Halcyone opened her eyes and faced the cave again. Nervously, she began heading towards it. The beach was deserted so no one would notice her heading over.
As her paws swept along the white sand, she arrived close to the cave. A whispering, freeze breath came from the entrance of the cave, almost making it seem it was breathing. Halcyone shook her head before she took a step inside the cave.
After a few minutes of walking, it was pitch dark however a light blue glow gleamed in the distance. Halcyone was jumpy, yet curious about the cave and what awaits her by the small, blue glow.
As she approached it, she discovered the glow was coming from a small, crystal clear pond that had strange plants growing at the bottom. The plants were many different colours but each one admitting a soft blue glow. However at the center of the pond, the plants grew tallest as they came out of the water and wrapped around a thin, rocky column planted at the center that went about 5cms above the shallow pool. On top of the column, a beautiful shell balanced precariously on its side. The shell a pearly white while sapphire blue spots littered its tips.
Halcyone stared at the pool with fascination, yet an overwhelming sadness and loneliness gripped her. Just like the ocean, only far stronger.
Halcyone felt a tear escape her eyes without realizing it, she was crying.
" Why... " she began to say, her voice sounding tiny and miserable. " Do I feel so sad? "
Halcyone looked around the cave. It was a small space and the pond being the only thing to look at. Returning to the pond, she looked at the shell again. Biting her lip, she wondered if she should enter the shallow pool to reach the shell...it was just far to beautiful to leave behind.
After much debating, Halcyone nervously entered the pool. The waters were warm and inviting as the plants seemed to glow even more. Halcyone tried her best to not disturb any of the plants, unsure if any of them were actually poisonous. Finally she reached the column and plucked the shell off of the rock. It was smooth and impossibly shiny up close, while the blue spots seemed to actually be droplets of water sealed on the pearly shell.
Carefully, Halcyone made her way back to the dry land before realizing something. When she took the shell, the sadness and loneliness left.
Halcyone wondered why before she carefully braided the shell into her hair so it would not fall out. Smiling, she wondered why the shell had been left.
Taking one last look at the pond, she left the cave. Promising to herself to visit the pond more often when no one was about. It would be her secret place.
However, when Halcyone left the cave. A voice whispered in hushed tones around the pool.
" A new player to my game "
" I wonder if they will be safe "
" I doubt she will understand "
" She signed her own grave "
