First touch

I had such a hard time coaxing Truffle to be petted when she first arrived. She avoided my touch at every cost, even staying in a large tree for hours. I knew that they said she was shy but everything seemed to more of an extreme degree then they must have realized. Even at feeding time, although she was very interested in the food it was plain to say that she had no same interest with me. Although Duncan and Keatan were stuffing their faces Roxy tried to coax her over with quiet calls and nudges. They seemed to get along pretty good, often grazing together in the fields. It gave me an idea, maybe I could get close to Truffle by using Roxy to comfort her. Next week I whistled to call my little herd in from the field that afternoon. They came running toward the fence, bounding and calling out excitedly. Duncan and Keatan soon swerved away and started chasing and pouncing on one another. Roxy came right up with Truffle on her tail, slowing down as she smelled me. I walked over to Roxy with Truffle watching my every move. For once she stood her ground and let me reach out to her with Roxy's encouragement. I moved as slowly as I could toward her, making sure not to make a wrong move. Yet knowing my luck Keatan and Duncan came thundering over and nearly ran us over. Chaos ensued and everyone scattered, Truffle taking off in my direction and Roxy scampering off behind me. Truffle was just able miss trampling me but still knocked me over into Duncan, or maybe Keatan. The herd scattered away, leaving me with a bruised arm and sore rump. I decided to consider it her first touch, even if it wasn't completely a willing interaction. But with Truffle I knew that I had to take the littler victories.

First Saddle

Truffle had finally gotten used to being pet which took an enormous amount of certain treats and time. Yet it didn't matter to me how long it took, just that we had finally got an understanding for each other. I decided to attempt putting on the riding gear since things have gone so well. I corralled her into the pen and collected the gear from the barn, while she watched on carefully from the other end of the pen. When I tried to call her over to me she looked away defiantly until I came back with a treat, an apple with no bruises. Only then did she wander over to me and let me put her halter on. She stood surprisingly still while I carefully let her explore the tack and gently place it on her. I was surprised how calm she was considering this was her first time even seeing the tack. However when I tried to walk her around she wouldn't budge, not even for treats. Yet as soon as I took off then tack she walked away without problem. I wondered if this would be a problem later in her training.

First ride

I could say that I was able to get Truffle past her own strong willed mind but that would be a complete lie. She refused to move whenever the tack was on her and practically bolted away as soon as it was off. Although this proved to be a slight problem with actually riding her, it made it very easy to just simply sit on her. Yet it never felt like an actual ride since she was practically frozen to the ground. I decided that this habit would have to be taken care of before it got completely out of hand. So I got her all settled in her tack and climbed onto her back. I had gotten nowhere with just squeezing her sides before so I gently tapped her with my heels. Not even a single acknowledgement from her even when I tried a little harder. I finally got fed up and decided that I could play this game of stubbornness too. "Alright, I'm not moving until you do." I told her simply.

I've never seen such a strong will, I thought as I watched the sun sink below the tree line. I was exhausted, sore and dizzy with hunger. Truffle had hardly moved on the contrary, only sinking her head down to sleep. I couldn't take it, this was going nowhere. "You win Truffle, you win." I said groggily and leaned forward to lay on her neck and tried to stretch my legs. She then chose that moment to lower her head and I slipped forward. Surprised she jerked her head back up and I nearly fell off and had to cling to her neck with my arms and legs. Truffle started forward in surprise and my legs got shaken from her neck, which spooked her and she took off, dodging and balking trying to dislodge me. I finally let go and landed roughly in the dirt while she snorted and pranced off with the reins up around her ears. After taking a moment to stand and stretch, me and Truffles stiffly made out way to the barn. I'll take what I can get, I thought to myself thinking this could be counted as a victory point for me.
