The First Touch

A week or so ago, I had gotten a letter from the owner of a stallion I had entered a contest for. The letter said that I did not win, and I was immediately disappointed, the stallion was just the one I had been searching a while for, and was so beautiful, however; then I got to the next part of the letter. They explained how much they loved my entry, and despite the touch decision of the winner, they wanted to give me something! It was a mare, A neravontii mare! I was so excited! I threw the letter into the air out of excitement and quickly snatches it out of the air as it peacefully glided downwards. I skimmed it quickly for a return address, and quickly wrote out my letter response to them saying I'd love to take her! Only a few days ago, I got the letter saying that the would be arriving today, and I was so excited!

After getting myself ready, I quickly ran out of the house to greet Violenca who was driving the trailer with my new Neravontii to my house. Impatiently, I waited near the icy dirt road and looked down the hill as far as I could see before it turned out of my sight. After pacing around a lot, I decided it may be some time. Checking my phone to see the time, they wouldn't be here in at least another 45 minutes, I decided I'd try to put some salt down to melt some of the ice on the road, and I might as well take Fern out for a hack on the dirt road to salt it. Why not take a little company with me, right? I walked over to the old fence, and stood on the bottom rail as I had done the first time I set my eyes on Fay, minus the whole falling into the pasture and greeting Fay for the first time. I gazed at my Neravontiis running about with each other. Fay was playing with Fara and Fern, Fay seemed lonely without Ferris to play with. Her games were a bit more calm, less intense without her attempting to outrun Ferris.

I snuck under the fence, sliding my body in between the top and bottom rail of the fence, reminding me I had to call someone up about extending the area for Fay, Fern, Ferris, Fara, and... that new one... hmm... Fay, Fern, Ferris, Fara, and... Filly? no... and... Flip? naa...Flika? or.. or Faith! Yea, that! Wait... no, no, no... I got it! Fiona, yea, that suits her, at least it suits her for what I saw in the pictures they sent me... I attempted visioning the pictures that were sent to me with the first letter of her, and from what I could reminder, the name suited her, although it may not suit her personality, it'll fit her just perfectly! "Fern!" I yell across the field. Fern quickly turns her galloping from across the length of the field, straight for me! I clench my eyes shut, scared to what would happen to Fay and Fara chasing close behind her. When I open them, everything seems fine, Fern's laying down near the other two of them, they seemed to have gotten tired, and laid down immediately, but how? Ohh, what ever, I won't question those three girls... I sigh and laugh at Fay and Fara's expressions at me while I walk over to Fern. I quickly hop onto her back, and ask her to stand. She stood nicely, Fern was the only one of my Neravontii's that would let me do so, we seemed to have a special connection together. Fern walked over to the fence gate and I leaned over to open it. I swung it open outwards, and Fern shut it with her tail.

Fern slowly took her time as we walked over near the shed door. The salt was right outside the door, and she quickly picked up the almost empty bag with her tail, placing it gentle in front of me on her back. By the time we had gotten to the bottom of salting the twisty road, I heard a familiar rumbling and I looked behind me. It was Violenca! I quickly waved, hoping to myself that they wouldn't have too much trouble getting up the road to my house. I stopped Fern, and they drove up to me so we could talk. We decided that the ice probably hadn't of melted, and it best be if we walked Fiona up to my house. At first, I was a bit nervous about walking up a brand new Neravontii, but Violenca reassured me it was going to be fine. They explained how they had been walking her fine in the time that they were waiting for today to come.

Quickly, Fiona was haltered up and ready to be walked up the hill. I Didn't have to worry much about Fern, she would just follow me. Violenca walked Fiona half the way there, I kept looking back behind me to see Fiona walking, looking a bit nervous at all the new surroundings. Once we got half the way up the hill, I was handed the lead rope. I grabbed it at the end, leaving a good 4 feet between me and Fiona, but I knew I couldn't lead her on that long of a lead just yet. I held my hand out and Fiona put her head back, scared by me. I kept my hand there, "It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you," I told her in a calm voice. Fern and Fiona already seemed to be getting along just fine. I motioned for Fern to come to me, and I stroked Fern's face gently. Fiona saw, and I moved my hand to the left, keeping it extended, from Fern to Fiona. Fiona didn't seem to move at all, nor was she as scared as before, and I lowered my hand onto her head. Her once tense ears relaxed, and together, we took a sigh of relief. Okay, at least that was over, now.. how will I introduce her to Fay and Fara, and Ferris when he comes back... hmm...

The First Saddle

Getting Fiona introduced to Fara and Fay was a bit difficult, but it worked for the most part. Fara and Fiona seemed to gradually go together with each other, they reflected each other almost perfectly. Although, if Fara were to do something, Fiona would do the same, just stay back a little, as she was a bit more shy than Fara was when it came to getting into trouble. Fern wasn't into the whole, playing tricks idea, and instead, watched from the back the two girls played. Fay, on the other hand, was not so thrilled with all the new Neravontii's coming in. With more Neravontii's to train, there was less attention on her, and she had "claimed" me first. She was one to hold a grudge, Fay, but I didn't mind as long as she was nice to all the new Neravontii's I had coming in. Ferris was expected to come in the next few days, along with his new son. Hopefully, Fay wouldn't hate the young colt as much as Fiona, maybe it was a mare thing?

Besides worrying about that, I really had to get Fiona trained up. I walked over to the fence gate with the old leather training tack. I placed the heavy saddle onto the top rail of the fence, placed the old rope halter and lead line on the fence post, and I slid under the top rail in between the two rails into the paddock. I basically gave up with putting the bridle on until my Neravontiis had gotten used to the saddle, it seemed to work well for Fara. I looked at the old saddle It was still a bit dirty from putting it on Fara the first time, but I brushed off the dirt and with it came a small puff of light brown into the air. This caught the attention of Fay, and she quickly ran up to me for attention. She nudged me in the back, and I rubbed her ears, as she tilted her head. She loved when I did so, and I could rub her ears for the rest of the way, but I had to get work done.

"Fiona!" I yelled. She looked up at me. She was grazing with Fara in the back corner of the field, away from Fay and Fern, who was not also approaching. I motioned for Fern to go away, and I did the same with Fay; however, they didn't seem to listen to me, as they stayed through the whole process of tacking Fiona up. Once Fiona finally arrived, Fara stayed back, and watched from a distance from where she had been grazing with Fiona. Swiftly, I slipped on the rope halter and fastened it to the right size for her head. I draped the long lead line over her back, which told her to stay put. Despite Fiona not being as familiar to my halter commands, she started to walk off while I was picking up the saddle. I quickly re-placed the saddle onto the fence and speed-walked over to Fiona. I picked up the lead line what was not dragging on the floor, placed my hand under her chin while holding close to where the lead line and the halter attached, and moved my fist towards her neck. As I did so, I placed my hand on her chest. She eventually backed up, and I tied the lead line to the post so she wouldn't want away.

Slowly, I lifted toe saddle towards the nervous mare beside me. All of my neravontii's were looking at her. Only Fern walked up to her to comfort the younger mare. She stood in a loving way right in front of Fiona, and Fiona stopped moving her feet anxiously. Fiona was pretty short compared to all the other Neravontiis I had, but still, I had to use the fence to tack her up. I stood on the bottom rail, and gentle placed the saddle pad onto her back. I removed it quickly, sliding it down her back and off her tail, doing this a few times. After a while, I left the pad there, and placed the old saddle on top. Her head quickly went up into the air, but Fern did the job for me of relaxing her. By having Fern next to her, relaxed, it took some of the stress off of Fiona. I then tightened the girth when I felt the time was right, and I took the lead rope in my hands, and untied it from the fence. I walked the nervous neravontii mare into the middle of the field, as Fay and Fern followed behind me, Fara still in the back.

I lunged Fiona for a little bit, she had come to me knowing how to do so. I made her go left, then right, and then left and right once more. She seemed to accept the saddle on her back by the end. Once I finished, Fern seemed to loose interest and decided to start grazing again on the mushy ground. Fay stayed though, and watched me and Fiona carefully. I could scene jealousy in her, but I had to ignore the facts and concentrate on Fiona's training right now. Hopefully, if I can do this same lung routine for a few more days, she will be ready for me to ride.

The First Ride

Only a few days ago, I put the saddle on Fiona for the first time. Now, after only a few, short, busy days, I'm going to ride her...Excited to see how Ferris and Fiona have treated eachother, I watch from a distance before deciding to sit on the fence and gaze out into the paddock. Yupp... I definatly need to start putting some Neravontiis into the new paddock soo... this place just isn't big enough to wait anymore to try it out... It's roomy, but I don't want anyone to start to fight because of not enough personal space... And with that new shipment of Neravontiis coming in from Ferris is back now, and with him, his young, energetic, beautiful son, Franklin. Fay didn't seem to be too happy about Franklin getting all of my attention recently, yet, despite this, she treated him like her own son. Ferris didn't like when Fay tried to "adopt" his son, and their relation ship changed. They were aggressive towards each other, and I would tell it would be a while until they created their friendship again.

Rather than hanging out with Fay, Ferris stuck around with all of the other mares, and seemed to be getting along nicely with Fiona, although, Fiona seemed more interested in Franklin, as Fay and Ferris stalked the new, scared colt. All of a sudden, I see a light green blur hide behind Ferris, as Fay ran after him. Then, the light green blur ran quickly, his legs moving him a great distance, but due to his short yet speedy legs, Fay could catch up to him. She had scared him into the corner of the fence, and started walking away, going back every few steps to check on him. She treated him as her own for a minute, before worried Ferris realized where his beloved son was. He ran up to Fay from grazing with Fern, Fiona, and Fara and confronted her.

However; I had to ignore the issue, hoping it wouldn't end badly, and start to work with Fiona on riding. Quickly, I scurried from the fence to the shed to grab the training tack. I had worked with Fiona twice a day, and yesterday was the first time I put the bridle on her. She responded to it pretty good, although, she was a bit confused at times what certain movements meant. I quickly placed the tack on the fence rail, noticing that ay and Ferris worked it out, Franklin grazing near Fay, with Ferris blocking the two of them. I shrugged, I could only guess what had happened, and I ran into the paddock with a halter and lead rope, heading straight for Fern, Fara, and Fiona. The three girls were grazing peacefully. Fern looked up at me, followed by Fara. The two of them looked at each other wondering who would be ridden, as they noticed the tack on the fence. I walked up to Fiona's side, and reached my hand out and slid it along her body, letting her know I was there so I didn't startle her while she was grazing.

When I arrived at her face, she looked up and stretched her neck out. Her mouth was full of snow covered grass, her lip white and furry looking because of the snow. Every once and a while, a few, small delicate water droplets dripped from the bottom of her lips when her warm breath melted the white snow. I slipped on the old halter and buckled it to the right size for her face. Looks like I'll need to get a new halter for Franklin soon... this will never fit him! I lead Fiona, who was still chewing a mouthful of shriveled up grass, near the fence. I kept her on a short lead, walking right next to her left shoulder the whole time. If she waked to fast, I would back her up. She was still learning to respect my personal space. I tied Fiona to the fence post using a quick release knot, I wasn't sure how she would take me being taller than her, and I needed easy access to let her run, just incase.

Once Fiona was all nice and clean, I quickly put the saddle on her. I tightened up the girth on the other side, and attached the tail piece. I put on the breast collar, and then climbed up onto the fence. Where I was standing, on the top rail of the fence, would be where I would have to stand to mount her. Fiona looked scared and confused at me being taller than her. I got down, and calmed her. I stroked her face gently and talked to her for a few minuets before getting back up onto the fence. This time, she wasn't as nervous. Her feet weren't moving in place, and she stood still. I got back down and praised Fiona for doing a good job. I quickly unbuckled the cold metal buckle on the halter, and slid it down her face. It hung from the fence, but soon fell to the ground from the weight of the halter pulling on the loose knot. Ignoring the fallen halter, I quickly put the reins over her neck, and put the bridle on.

I climbed up onto the fence, and took the reins into my hands. I leaned over Fiona, and put some weight on her back. She shuffled her feet, and as soon as she stopped, I took the pressure off. I did this a few times, before Fiona finally accepted the pressure. Then, I placed my foot into the stirrup, and leaned on my left foot. Again, I did this a few times. Fiona was ready. I placed my foot into the left stirrup, and pushed off of the fence. I swung my right leg over her back, and quickly placed it into the stirrup. I sat down. Fiona started walking off, but I soon stopped her. I gently kicked the side of Fiona once I got every situated and Fiona calm, and she stood there. I kicked her again, but I could tell she was confused. I lifted the reins high on her neck, and kicked her repeatedly until she moved. Once she did, I stopped for a second, and kicked her again until she moved. Soon, Fiona understood what I meant, and she started walking. We walked the length of the fence, and back to where we started. Pulling back on the bit, Fiona didn't respond. She threw her head in the air, I could tell the bit hurt her. "Woahhh, Fiona," I told her as I pulled back again, but more gently. This time, she stopped. Fiona looked at me to see if she had done it right, and I praised her.

Quickly, I dismounted and I put the halter back on her. I tied the same type of knot onto the fence, and I quickly ran back to the shed with treats in my pockets. Then, I un-tacked her, and rewarded her with lots of treats. I gave Fiona a huge hug, and I unbuckled the halter. I tapped her side, and she went running back to my other Neravontiis. They ran and played together, even Fay, Ferris, and Franklin. I smiled a huge grin, happy to see everyone liked each other again.
