Muir wrote:It was a brisk summer day. The air was warm and a breeze floated across the sandy shore. Mother had promised to teach me to swim today. Her only lesson so far had been "Get in the water, Muir." She now stood staring at me quietly, along with my other siblings. It was clear they were annoyed and wished to swim themselves - we were a family of fish - but Mother had told them to "Shut up and support your brother." To which their response was, "Go Muir..." I did not feel any better.
I gripped the sand as the water rushed forward and hit me with a gentle, frothy blow. The sand I was holding onto ebbed away. Slowly but surely, the saltwater pulled me further and further in. Up to my ankles. Up to my knees. Up to my belly. Up to my - oh no! I can't stand anymore! "Help, Mom! Help, Mom!" Those are the words I frantically yelped. All she did was take a few calm steps into the ocean water and speak to me soothingly. She said something along the lines of, "Honey, move your legs. Keep your head above water. Come to me. Come to me."
"Mom! I can't!" I was being tugged out further and further. Mother repeated the same words over and over. I began to punch the water with my paws, but my body would not escape the current. I was exhausted. My head bobbed up and down, and finally didn't come up. I was terrified. All I saw was murkiness. All I feel is cold. My head spins, and I become disoriented. I am more frightened when a dark shape looms over me. I cannot get away. The creature grabs me by the neck and I am yanked upwards.

I awake with my mother and siblings by my side, looking anxious and worried. I am propped up on a rock on the beach shore. Mother, as soon as she sees me awake, is in my face, spewing questions on me and smothering me. There is a sad look on her face. "Maybe swimming just isn't for you. It's alright, Muir. Just be calm." I was too exhausted to argue or answer. I lay my head by down and fall asleep.

A week later. I stand on the shore again. My mother is pacing slightly. "Are you sure, Muir?" She continually asks me this. My siblings have left us and are happily swimming around further down. "Yes, Mother. I'll be okay." Without another word, I leap straight into the ocean water. I had my brother give me pointers. I am ready. As soon as I'm in the water, panic rushes over me. The memories of the week before are awful. I close my eyes and slowly sink. Then I flick them open and pump my legs. Suddenly, I'm swimming. It is a wonderful feeling. It comes easy now that I understand the motions. I dive to the bottom, fling myself upward, and take a jump out of the water. My mother is smiling, and so am I. I shake myself off and run down to my siblings. I fly right into the middle of where they swim and grin. I am laughing.
I am a fish, too. Fear can't break pure determination.
