Roxy's first ride
Even though Roxy took the first two steps of training very well, our first ride was still yet to happen. As trusting as she was she just seemed to dislike the feeling of weight on her back. So I assumed that exposure to weight on her back would help make her more used to the feel of it. So I went and bought a few bags of flour, thinking that it was a safe, easy way to start training her. When I drove up she came running to greet me, jumping on my car and trying to open the doors. I got out and greeted her, scratching behind her ears like she loves, and then got out the flour. Curious, Roxy jumped down and sniffed at the bag of flour and plucked one from my hands. "Don't drop it please." I asked her and she was kind enough to keep a hold of it. I set them down outside of the tack room and she set her's down in the middle of the aisle. Then I got her settled into her tack and picked up the flour to bring them outside, she carried hers kindly again but set it down more roughly in the arena. I picked up a bag and set it on her back, to which she turned to look at with much confusion. She accepted it for a second one to be placed on her back as well, but at the third she grabbed all three with her tail and tossed them off her back. They landed against the barn wall, and half of me believes that she aimed on purpose, with a white puff. I groaned, not only was I out of flour bags to use but I would have to clean that up too. I planned for our first ride to be today and I didn't want to worry about it later on. So I went to get my helmet before I stuck my foot in the stirrup, and after taking a slow breath to steady myself, and hoisted myself halfway to let her feel my weight. She shifted a little and watched my every move as I slowly rose to sit in the saddle. We both waited, unsure what to do. I gave a gentle tap with my heels and she hopped forward in surprise. Then she immediately stopped and snatched me from the saddle and plopped me on the ground, none to gently. I wasn't sure if I wanted it to count as a ride, but the few graceful step she took with me astride her was amazing enough for me. It wasn't Duncan's ride, but we took a big step today and I was mostly glad I hadn't ended up like the flour bags.
