First Ride:
Kilio had slowly grown accustomed to the saddle, and Vane had taken it on and off every day, though had never had the guts to try to get on. The saddle seemed to have connected the rider and ridee, a certain level of trust established every time Vane buckled and unbuckled the stomach belt, each time feeling a bit more confident, his hands becoming more and more fluid with the movements. He was rarely nervous around Kilio, and Kilio was rarely nervous around him. Occasionally he would stomp and snort if Vane entered the stable too quickly or loudly, and still didn't like mud, but for the most part they had a mutual feeling for the other.
One late summer afternoon, Vane was leading Kilio around the pasture, in a deep thought. He nodded to himself. Today he would try to ride. This was certainly a huge step, from having a saddle on your back to a person, but it had to happen at some time. Vane glanced at Kilio, reaching up and patting cream neck.
Vane lead the Nevarontii back to the stable, though didn't put him back in his stall, instead taking him out into the main hallway. The Nevarontii snorted softly and flicked his tail, but seemed mostly calm. Okay. Van patted the creature's flank, then gripped the saddle horn. He pulled on it slightly, with only a tail flick of reaction from Kilio, and it seemed sturdy. Slowly and carefully he put his right foot in the stirrup, not much pressure, just to try to get a feel. He slowly put more and more weight, and Kilio snorted softly, one hand pawing the ground. "It's okay Kili, I'ts okay, nice and easy" he murmured then, in a fluid motion, swung his other leg over, and he was on.
Kilio snorted loudly, shaking his head, breathing holes opening and closing as he was flooded with adrenaline. He whinnied and grunted, tail curling and snapping like it was alive, the opposable tip curling. His nostrils flared and he began to take nervous steps backwards, quick little ones like he did before he bucked. "It's okay! Easy!" Vane called down to the creature, trying to keep his voice even and his breathing normal, he didn't want to scare Kilio more.
Kilio didn't buck, but even after he had initially calmed down he was still easily spooked, and his coat was covered in a thin layer of sweat. "Okay" Vane murmured, mostly to himself, "We're going to take this nice and easy." He gently squeezed his ankles against the Nevarontii's stomach, which triggered no results. That was expected, but he would have to keep practicing. "Come on boy" he breathed to Kilio, pressing his heels again. Kilio began to walk forward nervously, a few steps. "Good boy!" Vane cheered, taking out an apple and knife from his bag, slicing off a chunk and feeding it Kilio. "Lets try to make it to the pasture, okay?"
A few minutes later the pair had slowly and painfully made their way outside. Kilio didn't like this much, though with every couple of feet he seemed to become a bit more confident, his tail flicking less often and his footsteps gradually turning into his normal walk instead of a shamble. The fresh air seemed to calm him down even further, lifting his head in curiosity, eye sockets drinking in the surroundings. "Lets do a few laps, okay Kili?" Vane tapped the Nevarontii's side lightly, and he moved forward. He was becoming confident, the next step could be trotting. And suddenly they were trotting. Vane wasnt too nervous, it still wasnt very fast, but Kilio had done it by himself, and he still hadn't quite created a stop signal for him. His nervousness only increased When Kilio began to gallop.
"Woah!" Vane shouted to him over the wind as Kilio began to gallop. His ears flicked back but he made no signal that he was stopping. Vane got low in the saddle, gripping the reins clenched fists. He tried to pull back on them, but he was scared he would put too much pressure and Kilio would become spooked and throw him, losing confidence. They kept going faster and faster, from a trot to a canter to a gallop, to a full out run, racing around the pasture. It was simultaneously terrifying and exhilarating. After breaking a certain speed point, Vane wasn't scared anymore, it felt more like flying. He whooped as they flew, the grass turning to a green blur, the trees racing past on either side. The boy was almost lying down, only a few centimeters between his chest and the leather saddle, his wide black eyes lit with raw joy.
Finally, after a few minutes, Kilio slowed down, back to a trot, then a walk, and eventually stopped. His coat slick with sweat and his sides heaving, he bowed his head, teeth ripping grass from the ground. Vane slowly got off of the Nevarontii, his legs shaky as he dismounted. He was breathing hard as well, and pulled the remainder of the apple from his bag, which Kilio took and interest to and took from his hand. After catching his breath, Vane grinned widely, wrapping his arms around the Nevarontii's neck, oblivious to the sweat and dirt tat had been picked up. Kilio didnt turn, but his ear flicked back at his touch. "You're amazing" Vane whispered in his ear, and Kilio snorted, which Vane decided was in agreement.
