I placed the saddle on the fencepost and jumped the fence into Dorian's pen. The Neravontii flattened his ears and turned to me, instantly aware of my presence. I hauled the saddle off the fence and Dorian eyed it wearily - well, he seemed to be eyeing it. Hard to tell with the lack of eyes and all.
"Relax, buddy!" I said as he took a few steps towards me. He sniffed at the saddle for a moment, curiously prodding at it with his nose. He cocked his head and looked at me, as if to ask what it was.
"This," I said, dusting off the saddle blanket. "Is a saddle. And I'm gonna put it on you today."
After brushing down his coat, I stood in position beside Dorian. He stood still for me, but anxiously turned his head to check what I was doing every now and then. I put the blanket in place, which he seemed to take well enough.
"Saddle's next," I said, promptly placing it on his back. His head shot up in alarm, but he didn't run like I'd expected him to. He pawed nervously as the ground, shuffling around on his feet.
"Alrighty. So far, so good. I'm gonna tighten this up now, okay?" I said. The sound of my voice seemed to calm him a little, and he lowered his head, cautiously watching me. I worked quickly with the buckles and Dorian did not like it. He prodded the saddle with his tail, swishing his head and stamping at the ground. I finished with the saddle and took a step back to let him get aquainted with it.
He turned his head, stretching his neck to nibble at the saddle. He tugged at it with his tail, and I was slightly worried he'd find a way to unbuckle the straps.
That'd be good when I'm riding, I thought to myself, amused at the Neravontii's hard efforts. When he realised he couldn't remove it, he sighed heavily and looked at me in defeat.
"See? Not so bad!" I chirped. He didn't seem to share my cheeriness.
I removed the saddle and the blanket, placing them back over the fence. As soon as he was free, he jumped away and trotted around me.
"Well, he certainly didn't enjoy that," I mumbled to myself, amusedly watching Dorian give me a hurt look from afar.

I leaned on the fence, watching Dorian run laps around the paddock. He seemed to be enjoying himself as he ran after the birds in the sky. He looked like he was in a rather good mood today - meaning this was a better day than any to attempt to ride him. Dorian had become very accustomed to the tack, as I'd been training him with it for the past week or so. He no longer tried to pull the saddle off when I placed it on him, and he stopped trying to bite when the bit was placed into his mouth.
I jumped over the fence, as per my usual daily routine. Dorian heard me instantly and came trotting over, lowering his head and giving me a gentle shove. I stumbled backwards, almost tripping. I could have sworn he was getting stronger every day.
"Be careful with me, buddy. I'm a fragile human," I said, lifting up the saddle blanket. "And guess what we're doing today?"
Of course, Dorian had no idea what I was talking about, but he recognised the saddle blanket instantly. He stood still for me, knowing there was no getting out of the tack. With practiced ease, I managed to get the saddle and bridle on without trouble. I took his reins and lead him over to the nearest mounting block. I put the reins over his head and measured up the stirrups. As I gripped the saddle horn in one hand, Dorian turned his head to look at me, cocking his head in that curious way of his.
"I'm just gonna pull myself up, alright? Don't be alarmed," I said, hoping that I'd keep him calm by talking. He turned his head away, but I could feel him tensing up. I took a breath and pulled myself up, quickly finding my footing. Dorian turned his head sharply, but I'd already sat down. I could feel him prodding at my back with his tail.
"Easy, buddy. Relax," I said softly, running my hand down his neck. He pinned his ears back when I gave him the 'walk on' command, and took an unsure step forwards. It wasn't my first time riding one of these creatures, but it was the first time I'd ridden one that hadn't been trained by someone else. "Okay, okay," I said, somewhat nervous. I adjusted my grip on the reins. "Doing well!"
Dorian slowly became more confident, walking in circles around the paddock. I decided to up the ante a little bit. After we'd finished our fourth walking lap, I gave the command to trot. He obeyed, speeding up a little to a lazy trot. He seemed to be getting a little restless, so I stopped him after the second trotting lap. I dismounted and removed his tack, giving him a rewarding pat and a field mouse. I was so proud of him and felt fantastic - I'd actually ridden him! All that time spend sitting in the paddock with him and now I could ride him! I could just tell this partnership was going to work well.
