I have decided to keep a log of the training and what happens with Wildfire, my mustang. This is my official 2014 Mustang Makeover Training Log.

Week One

I rushed to get my mustang. She is a positively beautiful Chestnut Paint. I have named her Wildfire, and am very excited. I have made the decision to let her be wild for a week. She is new and confused, so I want her to adjust properly. I originally recruited two horses, Guitar and Aero, to be mommy's little helpers. However, now I have decided to place her with my mare Raleigh. Guitar and Aero are on standby. I hope this goes well!

As soon as Wildfire hit that grass, she didn't stop. She ran all across the pasture like a mad man. Raleigh shrunk into a corner for a while, just watching idly. I was afraid Wildfire would bite her! After some hours, the mare settled, and trotted around Raleigh agressively in circles. Raleigh, my bossy little mare, finally had enough, took action. She pinned back her ears and reared high, then came down hard on the ground. Wildfire snorted and paused. With her mood put in check, she nudged Raleigh softly and lowered her posture. They seemed to respect each other. This may be easier than I though.

Today I put Aero and Guitar into the mix. I hoped to help Wildfire with a herd enviroment. She seemed pretty calm. Aero easily held up a position as leader, and Guitar fell into it as her second-hand. They watched over the group, it seemed, and Wildfire slowed her craziness. She didn't even challenge Aero and Guitar, as if she felt the presence of their senority.

As planned, Wildfire was wild for the week. She ran the fences with Raleigh, and felt comfortable under the watch of Aero and Guitar. She quickly learned about all the other horses surrounding her. The first week went well.

Week Two

This was a rough week. Could anything else go wrong?

I bought a new, red halter for Wildfire. As soon as I placed it upon her, she retaliated. The mare bit me! I placed her in a round pen to let out her anger, and gritted my teeth. She broke the skin! While the mare went wild in the small space, I cleaned off the mark and put a light bandage on it. Not the best day. I left Wildfire in the round pen for the day, letting her get it all out and get used to her halter.

I allowed Wildfire to roll and run in the arena, to get her used to where I'd worked her. I walked her around, and she seemed quieter. Is she trusting me? What's going on?

Today was terrible. Tears were shed. When I let Wildfire into the pasture, I walked off, until I came running back at the sound of a crash. Wildfire was flailing around, tugging herself out of a wire that was astray. I rushed to her side, waving to my ranchhand to call the vet at once. I layed down the mare, pressing on her shoulder ever so gently. I was so worried Wildfire would be seriously injured. The good part of this week? For a moment, Wildfire looked me in the eye. It was then, I saw her trust. She had learned to trust me. The mare looked calm that I was here, settled down. I untangled to wire, and Wildfire kicked her leg away from it. When the vet came, I was glad to hear that her wounds were not too deep, but I would need to keep them clean and not do too much with her. What a wreck. I let Wildfire off the hook for the week.
