"It should be here by now! I don't understand!" A shrill voice echoed through the silence, interrupting Erebus's train of thought. With a sigh and a half chuckle, he folded and sat aside his newspaper. Soon after a short brunette female came flying around the corner, her hands thrown up in exasperation , her face twisted in anger to hide the worry in her eyes.
"Now, now. I'm sure there's a logical explanation for the delay. Besides, Utah is a fair ways away by truck, and yours isn't the only one being transported. " The girl shook her curls and slumped , pouting, in a kitchen chair. Erebus had been good friends with the girls father. Unfortunately, the force had taken his time away from his family. and the girl had grown up hateful and disrespectfully. Erebus was doing them a favor, no more, no less. He was hired on to help the girl with her new found obsession. She only recently had gotten into the horse business, while Erebus had made it a lifetime's interest, dream, and goal of his own.
He originally was hired on to teach her about horses- and that was going to be it. Then the girl wound up buying a Mustang fresh off the range. Erebus had been a bit angered, to say the very least. such an inexperienced being shouldn't have been permitted to purchase such a magnificent, and deadly , creature. Nevertheless, he now intended to train said horse - and make sure no abuse came to the animal.
" It's taking far too long! It's all a scam! I'm going to sue!" Erebus rolled his eyes and stood, easily towering over the bratty teenager. Thankfully, before he could speak , the sound of crunching gravel caught his attention. He glanced to the window- ,his brows furrowing as he thought. A fairly old pickup truck was pulling a fairly small horse trailer behind it. As the truck neared- Erebus heard the squeal of a very unhappy horse. Poor thing- had probably been cooped up in the dark trailer for hours!
"Oh goody! It's here! It's here!" The girl was bouncing now, and clapping- before she was bursting out the kitchen door. Erebus hurried after her, nodding to the man who got out of his truck. Erebus placed a hand on the girls shoulder to keep her near him, and to quiet her down. The man handed over a clipboard, of which Erebus signed, before he moved towards the back of the trailer. Erebus was thankful he had backed it to the open round pen. Granted- there wasn't much else a place he could've gone.
"Sorry it's so late. Some of em didn't want to load, and some others wouldn't let us catch them. We've got some deliveries that will have to be taken tomorrow. But, here ya go. " The man opened the trailer door, tugging the quick release rope , before he quickly scaled the round pen panel nearest him. Almost immediately, a blur of color and a cloud of dust erupted before them.
What emerged form the trailer was something truly wild. It skidded to a stop at the end of the round pen, then commenced to pacing at a rather high speed-looking for an escape. The man closed the round pen gate, tipped his hat, and drove off, leaving Erebus and an eager teenager behind in the afternoon sun. Erebus cautioned the girl not to enter, but merely observe. The horse released a deafening squeal, perking its ears promptly in hopes of an answer. But answer there came none. This was done a few more times as the horse paced, before it snorted, and began sniffing along the perimeter of the round pen. IT was a truly magnificent beast. Dirty, granted, and had a terribly wild and matted mane and tail- but it was a grand beast , nonetheless. and while Erebus was admiring it, the girl was loathing it.
" Its dirty! This isn't what I paid for! and I can't even go and pat it? Or ride the thing?! No, this isn't at all what I paid for. I want nothing to do with it! I want it off the property in the next twenty-four hours!" Erebus stared, mouth agape, at the girl. he was stunned- but perhaps not as stunned as he should have been.
"Come now, you can't just give up like that! Where will it go? you paid for it, gave it a home. Now where is it to go? The nearest slaughterhouse? I don't believe what I'm hearing!" HE had had it with her attitude and her holier than thou actions.
she, though, merely waved a hand and turned her back.
" You keep it then. " She spoke smugly, as if she were Marie Antoinette saying Let them eat cake. He sighed, turning to watch the horse instead. He could keep it indeed. He had many horses already, what was one more? A clean slate to work with, to mold? Yes. He would keep it. As if on cue, the horse lifted its head at stared at Erebus. Its ears were perked, its muscles tense. He noted, under all the mud , that the horse had white markings. a sock, a coronet, and even a faint star on its head. They shared a long, meaningful stare betwixt one another for what seemed liked eternity. but , on the horse's sigh and weight shift, Erebus moved to get hay and water for the night. Come the morrow- the horse would be at his place- and start its training.
