I met my mustang today, turns out it's a mare, a mousey grey overo six year old mare. I couldn't be any happier. she's beautiful, beautifully muddy actually... the first thing I plan to do is wash and groom her but only once she trusts me to touch her, I was so excited to bring her home. sadly, some of the staff had to help me load her into the trailer, I wish she trusted me enough to let me load her, but I understand where she's coming from. once I finally arrived home I couldn't help but get just a little nervous. this time it was a little easier for me to unload her. i haven't a clue of what I should name her. even when she's in the paddock she's nervous and weary of me. i cant help but wonder if i could coax her towards me with some feed or even some treats because every time i move towards her she moves in the other direction.
so, i took some time out of the paddock to just watch her before getting some food for her. it turns out, she likes puddles, she took her time to find every puddle in the paddock from when it had rained and decided to play in them. it didn't help with her grooming situation but it was so cute and fun to watch. for a six year old, she acts like a two year old, so young and full of life at heart. i quietly left for a few seconds to get something for her to eat. a few weeks ago when i found out more about the location she came from i decided to try and make things easier for her and me. i had ordered bales and bales of buffalo grass. it's always been easier to buy them in bulk, call me extremist if you wish though. I slowly started to mix her feed, adding only a cup of sweet oats just to give her a little taste of something special. I entered the paddock calmly, the bucket of grass and oats was loosely gripped in her hand. "hi, sweetheart. I have some food for you. I'm sorry you don't understand what's going on, but you're safe here." I spoke in soft words as I slowly moved towards the mare, once she caught a whiff of the grass and oats she took a weary step forward and a bright smile busted out of my face. "it's okay sweetheart, I won't do anything to hurt you, I love you. Come a little closer, please eat, you look like you're starving." I said as I looked at the look in her eyes, they were wide and filled with nervousness and desire. she bravely took two more steps and stuck my arm out wide for her, making the bucket of feed a foot away from her muzzle. I turned my head away and felt it as she gingerly push her muzzle into the feed and started to eat quietly. I slowly turned to look at her and smiled as she continued to eat. she looked up at me and slowed down a little. "it's okay girl, I won't hurt you." I watched as the mare finished eating, she didn't move as I quietly set the bucket down. I slowly but boldly moved my hand towards her nose, lightly touching it before she pulled back and trotted to the other side of the paddock. "thank you, sweetheart." I said quietly as I moved quietly to sit on one of the dry spots. "I'm here if you possibly want to say hi."
