Story:
[Owner]
When I awoke with the sun just slightly beginning to appear over the horizon, I leapt out of bed. No sleeping in today. I could hardly sleep last night, and it is even now the last thing on my mind.
"I have to get everything done! We have to be ready!"
Although we came to the arena the night before, there are still endless things to do. Elf and I must be ready, nothing less of it. I run to his stall, and without pausing to see him in the morning, I throw in his hay and a small bit of grains.
"Eat up, boy. Don't forget to drink as well!" Then I'm gone. I hurry to get dressed and heave out all of the heavy tack. Sometimes my mother asks why such a smaller girl as me would choose such a heavy horse, along with a heavy sport.
I just laugh - it's not the weight or the kind of horse, it's the personality and the passion. I've always been the only horse person at my household - it took years to even beg for lessons, much less con my family into getting an actual horse.
I check the clock - an hour and a half until the show began. I shoved breakfast in my face, changed clothes, put on light dabbles of makeup, and hurried out side while struggling to pull my boots on. Horses started to be led out or walk into the warm-up arena - I had to get going!
I was never one to be last - I always had to be the first, or somewhere around it. NEVER last.

[Elf]
I paced in my stall, gobbling down my hay and grain. I only paused when I heard the stalls nearby open and close, or if I heard the buzz of the distant announcer's voice. Finally, my door creaked open. I stood straight and still, eyes glittering in the shadows.
"How's my big boy?" I heard my driver's sweet voice. I whinnied with excitement in return. I was led into the morning light, and was brushed over and over. I held my feet up obediently to be picked, as I always did. I let her put my hair into neat designs, let her perfect me for the big event today.
After what seemed like forever, I saw my cart roll over from the corner of my eyes. It was an expensive, top-notch cart. I had pulled it for years now, and it had been cleaned specially for today. I had waited my life for this event. I always heard my driver talk about it year after year - now I was really doing it. It had been painted over chipped parts with shiny black paint. Then, a pretty design had been flicked on there, effortless and beautiful. Sleigh bells were attached to it so that it jingled and jangled just slightly when I pulled it, a sound I learned to enjoy rather much.
I was strapped into my harness, scenting its familiar, leathery smell. I then heard the cart being hitched on, and my excitement rose. my dappled, dark brown fur shimmering, and my muscles rippled beneath my coat as my owner stepped into the cart, took a hold of the reins, and urged me forward. My own hooves hitting the ground filled my ears. Dust rose behind us, yet I didn't pause or look back. Tinsel-like material was wrapped around my harness, which gleamed in the sun as well. It was perfect. Everything was perfect.
As the arena neared, my heartbeat rose with my anticipation, and my footsteps became lighter, quicker. The bells from the cart rang in my ears, tinkling just lightly, yet roaring in my ears.
"Elf..." I heard my driver warn softly. I slowed my steps best I could. The intercom clicked on, and the announcer's voice filled the air.
"Rambunctious Spirit is up next in the Draft Horse Class!" I perked my ears at my name. My driver pushed me into the arena, and we paused and waited to start the event. The crowd stared intently, pointing at the decked-out cart. Nothing felt better then the applause that floated down into my ears. I wanted to rear and jump. But I had been trained better. It was time - time to shine, to show. I could do this. I would do this. I drank in the cheering while I could, my hooves moving about in anticipation to start. I listened to it slowly die down, and curious eyes burn into me. This was it.
I realized that my owner had signaled me to begin, and I started automatically. Flawless. I contained my excitement, and focused on the pattern. This was my arena for the time of the pattern. All mine. I would do it. I wouldn't make a mistake. The bells began to sound off again, and I could hear the crowd chatter about the cart excitedly.
As we took the first couple steps, I heard my driver whisper to me before going silent. These words echoed through me throughout the whole event.
"I believe in you, Elf."

The handsome blue roan Sabino stallion was hitched up to the cart and ready to go, nostrils flared slightly and ears perked as though he were judging the competition. He swished his tail a little bit from side to side, then turned his head to look back at the pretty red head sitting behind him on the wooden bench like seat of the cart. He snorted softly as he nodded his head up and down as though to tell her he was ready, and they were going to do just fine. He flicked his ears and then turned his attention back to the other horses and their owners/drivers.
He shook his mane a little bit as he watched the other horses and the people, some still milling about and checking hitches, lines, reins and the like. He blinked his eyes as he heard one of the other horses whinny, backing up slightly as he saw her rear up and the person belonging to her trying to get her to calm down. He gave a quiet little snort, hearing his own girl make a soft sound he could tell was one of nerves and high wired energy. He turned his head to glance back at her again, giving her the look of gentle reassurance which so many times she had given him throughout the years. He saw her relax visibly and nodded once more. And then, the both of them straightened up as they heard the call to get in position in the arena.
The stallion let out yet another whinny as they waited their turn to the call, standing perfectly straight and tall, ears perked and tail flicking lightly as he stood in wait. The others before them each were called to go, ranging from an Irish Draft to a large Clydesdale. He threw his head up as he then heard their call to the ring, even though they were already there. He walked as his mistress signaled him to do, prancing slightly as he did and showing beautiful manners and movement as he went. He went the length of the arena, circling then coming back down and standing for a moment for them to look if they so wished to. He then went one more circuit at a slight trot before returning to stand in his position at the line, he and his driver both anticipating the call of placings. He could almost hear her heart beat in time to his, fast and slightly nervous, as they waited...

Horse's name: Champagne on Ice
Horse's breed: Haflinger
Entry:

The palomino mare snorted, dancing in place. Feather, her human, soothed her with a gentle hand upon her neck. "Hush, Magnum. Hush girly. It's almost time." The 14.3hh mare tossed her head one final time before settling, chewing on her bit, then snorting as the metal made a shrill creak. Her head shot up, ears swiveling from side to side. Finally, she gave a screeching whinny, stamping a hoof in exasperation. She wanted to go, to run, to be free. The harness weighed heavily on her back, the cart behind akin to a large monster, ready to pounce. A ray of sunlight illuminated her, causing her coat to glow golden. The little mare shivered, feeling slightly intimidated by the larger horses milling around. She wondered where her best friend was. Another whinny escaped her, echoing around the space, yet she did not get the reply she'd hoped for. Then a whisper in her ear from Feather telling her it was time to go, and a slight increase in the weight behind her. With a half rear, she leapt forwards, ready to go. Yet the reins calmed her, held her back to a walk. Her wiry body strained for a second, before the cart began to roll at a steady pace.

There were people surrounding her. Magnum snorted softly, alarmed by the swell of applause as she entered into the arena. Her sensitive ears caught a voice saying "Champagne on Ice, beginning now." Then suddenly, she caught Feather's soft voice, telling her to walk. Pricking her ears, the mare moved into an airy walk, suddenly focused on her task at hand. She shifted through her gates with an ease that only came with her relaxation. Suddenly, from within the crowd, a dog barked, and the mare stopped short, terror shooting through her body. She reared, screaming out her horror, and bolting ahead, adding a buck. Feather gasped, calling out to her softly. It was all Magnum needed to calm down and return to her airy pace. The rest of the round went without a hitch.

After the competition, Feather had untacked Magnum, hitching her to a post. When she returned, there was nothing but a halter hanging off the lead rope. "Damn it!" the girl muttered, knowing her escape artist had struck once again. A round of applause from the arena startled her, and she rushed off in that direction. Peering into the ring, she spotted Magnum, right in the centre, bowing to the crowd, still sweaty from her course. Feather smiled, watching for a moment before calling to her mare, and waiting for her to return.
