~ First Saddle ~
It had taken weeks of patience, and visits every day to gain the trust of Jaye, but it was all worth it. Finally, today was the day that I was going to take a chance and put a saddle on Jaye...I just hoped he wouldn't throw it straight off again? I slowly made my way to where he was stabled, carrying my much-loved saddle in my arms, and tried to see if he was waiting for me.
I had begun bringing treasures for him to find in my backpack, as a distraction for while I was getting him used to wearing a saddle blanket. I'd toss the bag down and wait until Jaye was thoroughly into rummaging before laying weight across his back, it had worked so well that now it didn't even bother him when I put the blanket on.
But today was different, the saddle was much heavier than the blanket so I needed something really special to keep his attention. Today, I had brought a jar full of knick-knacks that I had been adding to, knowing he wouldn't be able to resist opening it and touching/smelling every little item individually. Guaranteed to keep him from knowing what I was up to until it was too late.
I came around the corner of the stable and saw Jaye waiting for, his head poking over the gate, "seeing" me coming and getting excited. I couldn't help but smile at his antics, knowing he was such a sweet boy, and How much I adored him.
When I was close enough, I tossed my bag in his direction and watched as he caught it with his "tail" hand, turning around and heading for the corner to dig out his treat. Once he was fully distracted I opened the gate and snuck inside with the saddle tucked under my arm.
I walked up beside him, knowing he wasn't even caring at that point, and tossed the saddle blanket over Jaye's back. He never even twitched, so I knew it was now or never! I very slowly and carefully laid the saddle over the blanket and reached under his belly, grabbing the other strap and buckling them together. Once that had been accomplished, the hard part was reaching around his chest and fitting the breast strap...there was no way he wouldn't notice me doing that so close to his nostrils.
Suddenly he pulled back to inspect a shell that I had tucked into the bottom of the jar? I knew the smell would be curious to him, so that was my best chance! As he held the shell up, I quickly reached under and got the chest strap connected! Finally, my boy was saddled for the very first time, without even realising it had happened?!
I had a huge smile when he turned to me and gave an experimental shake of his back, then he turned and started exploring the new attachment, not really too worried because it fit well and was comfortable. I gave him a friendly pat, and he nuzzled against my hand, seeming to know that I wasn't intending to cause harm.
I left the saddle on a bit longer, for him to adjust to the weight, and after he'd finished looking at all his treasures, I took the saddle off again and gave him a wipe down before packing my things into my backpack again. As I was leaving, I felt Jaye give me a little push in the back and lean his head over my shoulder, he was standing so close I could feel his breathe.
I felt so lucky to have found such a gentle Neravontii, I hadn't adopted him, he's chosen me.
