What is a Mutato?

In a rapidly changing world of rapidly accumulating toxic waste, Mutatoes take to the sky.
These creatures, affectionately dubbed Mutatoes, are a sad combination of an unknown creature, radioactive material, and a potato.
They live in the sky and consume UV radiation. They are the new era of Super Man.

At birth Mutatoes are about the size of a potato and can grow to around the size of a basketball.
Generally they are busy creatures who would prefer flying to being carried.
The Mutato is filled with the same kind of gases that its tail is made of.
These gases are currently unidentified, but are lighter than air- enabling them to fly.
They can stay in the air for a maximum of 20 hours straight before they need to land and "rest".
Though, when they can't be in the air, Mutatoes pace... a lot.

Reason for choosing the name
It shall not be in my place to tell you why this name was chosen. Let me take us back to a few years ago, when this particular Mutato was born. An image started to appear in front of your very eyes..

"What shall we name her?" Voices were heard from a small hole, from a hole seemingly dug by a small creature. "Hurry! We must name her before the sun sets! Before the last of the light is gone!" It was sunset. The sun was quickly setting. Beautiful hues of blue, pink, purple and such tinted the skies. The clouds reflected every bit of light that was shone upon it, blending in quietly with the sky. "Are you sure?" A hushed voice whispered. There was a few crackling noises, presumably from the movements made from a creature that was moving in the large patches of grass. "Then Galaxy her name shall be." A Female Mutato, with a youngster in her arms appeared. Soon after, another male Mutato appeared. They huddled together. "Blessed be she." Muttered the female, looking at the youngster affectionately. The male glanced at the female and smiled. "Aye, she will be. 'Galaxy. A collection of stars, gas, and dust bound together by gravity. The smallest galaxies may contain only a few hundred thousand stars...'" The male started reading out from a book that we had not noticed he was carrying before. The female Mutato grinned. "This youngling shall have stars protecting her, the dust on the ground protecting her wherever she may roam to, and the gas in the air protecting her and surrounding her always, she shall never drown..."

The scene before us ended, leaving us with the scenery that was seen before.

On a beautiful night, when the moon was glowing and round, the skies were all a color of dark blue, a rather young Mutato laid her head down on the grass, with her face glancing up at the skies. Suddenly, a bright light appeared out of nowhere. The Mutato squinted. She saw something truly amazing, so pure, so out of this world. She saw a shooting star, with its white bright light streaking across the clouds. A thought came to her: I wish these beautiful memories were forever ours to keep. Without knowing, she spoke aloud. That wish, it came true, though she did not know it. Years worth of memories were stored inside her, from the lands full of flowers and windmills, the lands in which she had once wandered in. And sometimes, when this Mutato would have trouble falling asleep, the night in which she had seen that shooting star's scene replayed and replayed over and over again in her head...

Shooting Star wished that he could become one with the belt of stars in space, one of the skies, and one of the big blue, the ocean filling above him. He wished to become a star so brighter, so brighter than any star, that is except for the sun...

I have always loved the name Hoshi, it is just so cute and girly, and it fits perfectly with this girl because Hoshi is a Japanese name meaning "star".

★ ☆ One of her shooting star wishes;; ☆ ★
Considering her belly shows a shooting star, she tends to wish on that one a lot, but when she saw her first real shooting star, Hoshi wished for a bowl of ramen. Since it was her first actually shooting star, I ran over to a store bought some ramen, and made it before she noticed. I placed the bowl outside where she was flying and she was so excited to find her wish come true and to have free ramen.

This Mutato's name is Raritas. Raritas means 'curiosity' in Latin, but it can also mean rarity.
I believe that this name suits this Mutato because, like his name suggests, Raritas is very curious.
Curious about the world, curious about everything around him. He's always eager to learn new things,
but sometimes this curiosity is not so good. Curiosity killed the cat, after all.

There was once when Raritas glimpsed the sparkle of a shooting star. He would never forget
this day, many many years ago. For he made a wish. A wish upon a shooting star. He wished
that the world would become a peaceful place, a place where violence was non-existent.
He wished for the world he had dreamed of for many years, a vast blue sky free of pollution,
great big fields of lush green, free from the buildings which humans created. This is what he
wished for, almost like an utopia. The wish has not been fulfilled, but Raritas believes it
will be.
