Far Away - Jose GonzalezCold wind blows into the skin.
Can't believe the state you're in....
Far just barely managed to catch himself as he tripped into a deeper area in the snow, the branches of the low hanging trees lashing his face and the cold air hurting his lungs. The mountain side he was running down was treacherous, the terrain foreign to his hooves. He was so much more used to a grassy paddock, or the soft dirt of an arena. The ground was unstable and rocky, which was not made any better by the snow and ice. He was almost sure he was going to kill himself up here, and was starting to loose speed. However a low, pained moan from the sickly young man on his back and clutching his mane was all it took to spur him on. He needed to help Peter, and get help for the injured mare at the summit. And he would do it, even if it's the last thing he ever did.
Far was a tad bit more careful to dodge trees after the smell of blood reached his nostrils. His face must have been badly cut up. The wounds stung and burned like fire in the frosty winter air. His legs ached, and his mouth was dry. Yet he pushed on through the darkness, eagerly searching for the warm light of civilization. Humans. Help.
Finally, the slope of the mountain began to level out and the woods were less dense. He could see flat land in the distance, but a loud whistle and the distinct sound of a train caught his attention, and he noticed the tracks that lay ahead of him. The train was just a few yards off to his right, and approaching fast. He knew he wouldn't have time to let the train pass. It would take far too long, and Peter needed medical attention soon.
Far focused all his energy on gaining more speed to beat the train. His pace gradually quickened, his breathing heavy. Muscles aching and his sight going fuzzy. Peter, half conscious, noticed what the stallion was about to attempt. "Far-N-No!" He called out. But his protests were lost to the wind.
Far cleared the train tracks just in time, the gust from the train flashing by nearly knocking him off his hooves. Peter's grip on his mane tightened, and Far feared he was about to pass out. Luckily the familiar sight of the barn lay right in front of him across the dirt road. He was on the last stretch.
There was already a crowd gathered in front of the barn, milling around anxiously. Far managed to pick out the girls, Tammy and Angela, talking to a police officer. They hadn't noticed yet. However when Citali ran out and started barking excitedly and Far whinnied, everyone spun around to look.
"Peter!!!!!" Tammy and Angela screamed, running to their friend's aid when Far slowed to a stop. They carefully pried Peter, who was now dead weight, off of the stallion's back, pushing a very nervous Citali out of the way when she tried to lick his face.
Everybody was overjoyed to find that Peter was home in one piece, but he wasn't the only one who needed rescuing. Far danced around in the gravel nervously, waiting for one of them to notice. Angela did.
The brunette turned to Tammy, with one of her rare, concerned looks, plastered across her face. "Wait! What happened to Conradine?" She questioned. Peter's eyes opened briefly. "Connie...Summit....Injurned...Hurry...." He managed to utter before finally passing out after the whole ordeal. After hearing this everyone else was already on the move to go and retrieve the mare, Citali leading the way.
One of the grooms tried to hook a lead rope to Far's halter, but he wasn't having any of it. He jumped out of the way, then bolted off towards the woods once more, preparing himself to start the climb back up the mountain for his second rescue mission of the night. He knew he wouldn't be able to do much, but it was likely that he was going to get there before the others, so he wanted to make sure Connie was okay and keep her safe from the time being. The temperature was dropping and the blizzard was thickening, but even then the climb back up didn't seem so bad. He jumped over a fence, bolting back into the trees and up the slope.
Perhaps he was a man of action after all.
