It was just before dawn when Tenebris heard the cry. The shrill sound of a panicked foal. Tenebris was instantly awake and on guard. Was it just his imagination? He stood as still as possible, closed his eyes, and strained his ears. There it was again. It wasn't his imagination. Quickly determining the direction from which the cry came from, Tenebris quickly began to gallop towards the endangered foal. He quickly realized the sound was coming from the river. In his worried state, Tenebris forgot about the barrier for a minute and had a horrifying thought that a foal had fallen into the river. As he got to the river, upon seeing the barrier once again, he felt less panicked. But what could be harming a foal in Drasta's sanctuary? Still tense, Tenebris walked alongside the river, heading towards the sound of the foal. Soon he had the foal in his sights. It was a pure white foal with blue eyes. Given it's small stature, it was obviously very young. It was starring, panic-stricken at a large buck. Tenebris sighed with relief. He quietly walked over to the pair, nodding his head in greeting to the deer, who was looking at the foal with confusion.
"What is wrong young one?" He asked the foal curiously.
"Th..this creature.. it was watching me. I don't know what it is, it walked up to me, is it going to eat me??" The young colt cried. Tenebris had to stifle a laugh.
"That is a deer buck young one. He is the leader of his own herd just like a stallion would be. Now tell me. Would a stallion eat a foal?" He reasoned, smiling. The colt shook his head.
"No.. So he won't eat me? Why can't he speak?" The colt asked curiously.
"He speaks, just a language that we can not understand. He will not harm you. He was probably worried about you. You are very young to be all alone. Where is you herd?" Tenebris asked, with slight concern. The deer quietly left, satisfied that a member of the same species as the young colt had come to help. Tenebris nodded to the deer as he left, receiving the same sign of respect in reply.
The colt looked down and shuffled his hooves. "I got separated from them." He whispered in an embarrassed tone, answering Tenebris's inquiry.
Tenebris frowned. "How did that happen?" He asked. The colt seemed ashamed to answer.
"I got distracted by a unique flower. I wandered too far looking for others, and then I couldn't find my way back." The little colt answered shyly. Tenbris chuckled.
"I can understand that. My name is Tenebris. I'll help you find your herd." He declared, smiling gently. The foal looked up at Tenebris with obvious relief and gratitude.
"You will? Thank you!" The colt exclaimed gleefully. Tenebris chuckled in response.
"Of course. Now where was the last place you saw them?" He inquired. The colt paused, tilting his head as he thought.
"It was on the other side of the river, at the base of the mountains." He stated as the memory came to him. "How do we cross the river? I can't remember how I got on this side." The colt admitted sheepishly. Tenebris chuckled again.
"There is a bridge not far from here. Follow me." Tenebris stated. The two galloped along the river until the bridge appeared. It was a series of rocks that jutted out of the water, creating a safe crossing for all creatures. The two quickly crossed and began to head towards the mountains. When the reached the base, Tenebris stopped and looked at the colt.
"Is this where you last saw them?" He questioned. The colt nodded.
Tenebris looked around carefully. The herd was nowhere to be seen. But with a missing colt, especially one so young, they would not have gone far, just in case the foal returned. Spotting a broken branch, Tenebris smiled. The herd left a trail for the colt. Tenebris nosed the colt in that direction.
"Look. They made a path for you." He stated gently. The colt was obviously relieved.
"Oh thank goodness." The colt nearly wept. Tenebris nuzzled the foal affectionately.
"Well then, let's go. I'm sure your mom is worried." He stated. The colt nodded and the two horses began to follow the path along the mountain's base.
Soon they came to a hill overlooking a clearing. And in that clearing grazed a large heard. They had found them. The colt neighed joyfully and began to run down the hill, Tenebris followed walking. The herd all looked up at the noise. Their relief was obvious. A silver mare broke from the herd and raced over to the colt. As soon as he was in reach, she nuzzled and checked for injuries.
"Don't run off like that again! You scared me half to death." She declared, smiling in relief. The colt nodded his agreement.
"I won't! But I got to meet a deer buck and I made a friend!" He declared, glancing at Tenebris. The stallion laughed.
The colt's mother looked up at the stranger in surprise. She quickly connected the dots. "Thank you for bringing him home. And explaining deer to him. I'm sure that was an interesting experience." She teased. Tenebris chuckled. "It certainly was." Tenebris agreed.
"Mom!" The embarrassed colt cried out, making his mother and the rest of the herd laugh. They all glanced up as a large grey stallion approached. "Thank you stranger." He greeted warmly. "Our colt here seems to constantly get in trouble. I'm glad there was someone like you to help him." He stated, making Tenebris nearly blush.
"It was nothing. Anyone would have done the same." The younger stallion stated, embarrassed at the attention.
"Do you have any foals of your own? You'd make a great parent!" One of the herd asked. Tenebris froze, deeply embarrassed.
"No. Not yet." He whispered. The herd laughed at the young stallion's obvious embarrassment.
"Regardless thank you." The mare spoke up, saving Tenebris from further teasing. He nodded in response.
"Of course. I must get going now." He stated, glancing at the sun that was now high in the sky. The older stallion nodded.
"Farewell. Thank you again. Feel free to visit." He declared. Tenebris smiled and with a nod of respect, galloped home.
