What is their ideal fall festival?;; An ideal fall festival for Eule would be something that made everyone happy, no matter who they were.
The festival would appeal to all colors and creeds, of all ages and sizes and shapes.
The world would be at peace at this festival, a brief bubble of joy and happiness in a world of chaos.
Sure, the annual Turning Festival is fun, but it really is just a way for the government to impress the other countries.
Look out our country, how happy and joyous we are! Look at our rich culture, happy people, wonderful houses and towns!
Wouldn’t you like to live here? It’s simply another way for the bloating tyrant of a country named Karish to flaunt off itself.
But, as he sits on the train seat, he can’t help but think of the festival when he sees more and more yellowing trees as the days go by.
How would he go about organizing a festival for everyone?
Wait, why is he even thinking about this?
He’s a level six citizen, and he works at a construction site for little pay, with the marker on his arm letting the world know he belonged to level six.
Organizing a fall festival would be impossible for someone like him.
But, he remembered something as he stares at a few leaves plastered on the train window.
‘My mind is my domain, it is my house which I control and do with what I please. It may be grand, small, peaceful or chaotic. My mind is mine to do with what I please, and I may do what I want in my mind.’A famous saying from his long gone mother, whispering peace to his nervous mind.
His body and lifestyle may be dictated by the country of Karish, but his mind was as free as the summer winds.
Eule wouldn’t be able to tell a soul about this idea, but at least it would keep him entertained while on his way to work.
His body went on autopilot, Eule barely paying attention to the other passengers, the buzzing city fading completely away, his fellow passengers unconcerning blurs.
It would be a week long, each day filled to the brim with love and joy.
Every house and street would be decorated with colors of reds, oranges, and yellows.
Banners and strings of colorful leaves would hang everywhere, the telephone poles and streetlamps wrapped with gold and red. Stalls would be littered everywhere, and every so often a space for dancing would be made.
Warm pies, crisp candy apples, hot sausages and so much more would be sold at some of those stalls.
Food of all kinds sold all the time, and jack-o-lanterns would decorate the streets.
And then, street magicians and performers would be everywhere.
Impossibly tall legs built on sticks wading through the crowds, jugglers showing off on the corners, children getting their faces painted while magicians swallowed swords and made balloon animals.
Stages would be set up every few blocks, plays and puppet shows displayed on them by talented actors and fit ballerinas.
Music would flow from bands, each one playing a happy and different folk tune.
The daytime would belong to the children and their families, with the night ruled by the adults.
During the night, much would be the same.
Except, well, more activities for the adults would open up, and previously prohibited drinks would be available.
But, what activities could open up anyway?
He had most of the entertainment going now, and food, but it still seemed lackluster. Maybe specific things for each day?
Day one would have costumes set up to be bought, elaborate masks displayed on most of the stalls.
Apple bobbing would be good to have going too, but that would probably be an all the time thing.
Hmm… what to do what to do?
Planning a fall festival was harder than he thought! Suddenly, an idea popped into his head as he stared at the leaf that had just smacked into the train window.
Leaf-gathering!
It sounded boring, he had to admit it.
But, all the leaves would be stacked in the center of, well, somewhere.
Then, as all the extra leaves were collected on day one, day two would be made for them to be jumped in.
That would be fun, wouldn’t it?
A leaf pile big enough for many people to jump and play in.
Maybe even a grand play would be somewhere, reflecting the one play everyone knew and loved, The Scarecrow?
That would be good.
And perhaps the opening of a costume contest?
Hmm, what to do for day two? A grand lunch perhaps?
At twelve o’clock, when the master clock struck noon, tables would be set up in every square, street, and alley.
And then food that had been prepared by the people on day one would come out, and everyone could help themselves to everything.
A lunch for everyone to enjoy, with food made from each family's secret recipe showed off on every table.
That would be one way to get people together, but he needed something else too.
Maybe the costume contest before would have a day by day judging, and then a grand one that went on all week, with the winner announced on the final day.
That could work.
Maybe a contest of strength could be set up?
Archery, ax-throwing, sword-dueling, swimming, running, races, and more could be set up. Perhaps something with the race could delve into teams?
Yes, that could work.
Two large teams would be set, red and yellow.
They would be set in an obstacle course, and see who get through the fastest. But, the trick was, you had to either hold paws or tails.
Forcing people to interact via paw/tail holding was always fun to watch.
Now he was onto day three, and he already had so much planning done.
How would he ever make it to day seven?
Perhaps day three would have three activities, just like the days number.
But then again, that could work for every day as well. A public bake off, maybe? But it was a granny bake off.
Every grandma and grandmother would come together in teams of five to ten, and would each bake a dish.
Every team would be baking the same dish, and the public would decide which team had the best dish that only grandma could make.
But what else could he do?
What was something most people didn’t know about or appreciated, that could shine in fall?
Knitting, yes, knitting could be shown off!
A few blocks would open, just made for learning how to knit.
It would open from dawn till dusk, and it would be supplied with all sorts of yarns and needles.
Perhaps then the ancient pastime that had been forgotten by the residents of Karish could revive itself.
And what would be the final activity?
Oh, maybe a hot chocolate area would be set up?
All day and night hot chocolate would be served fresh on the entire block, stores and stalls made just for that.
Sure, hot chocolate could be sold all the time, but this was special.
The entire block was selling it! That would allow businesses and families to kick start a living, by selling their own version of hot chocolate at their doorstep, recipes bought up by and used if owners of large businesses happened upon it.
Day four creeped up on him as he saw the train station appear in the distance.
He’d have to work on this idea later, maybe when he came back home?
But, he could at least do something about day four for now. Maybe the kids could go on a scavenger hunt through the city, and at night the adults could go as well?
All sorts of goodies would be the prizes if you followed the instructions, and a grand prize if you could find all the spots.
Designated Kalons would stand at those spots, and when you found them you got there signature.
If you got all of them, you would qualify for the grand prize.
And then the next activity would be the battle of the bands.
The first part would be a battle of folk music, and then the second would be more modern music.
The wouldn’t really be any winner, it would just be a way to make everyone happy.
And if the bands could play good enough, then the public would respond by supporting them.
Now he had to plan the next event.
Jack-o-lantern carving popped up in his mind.
A few blocks would be set up just for pumpkins to be carved, and they would be taken home to be set up on the stairs leading to the homes of the participants.
A contest would be held of course, and the winner would be announced on day five.
As the train pulled into the station, Eule stood up, and put the planning for day five on hold.
As Eule boarded the train again for the second time that day, he thought back again on day five.
Day five would have a beer-crafting contest for the adults, while the kids could see who made the best hot-chocolate.
And maybe a talent show?
Yes, a talent show that would go on all day until dusk, where the winner would get three massive bags of candy and a certificate. That’d be a lot of fun!
And maybe, a mask contest too?
Yes, the one with the most impressive mask would one a contest during the day, that would have a bag of candy for the prize.
But now, he wanted something else for day five. But, the biggest, most extraordinary things would happen on the last day.
Day six would be known for it’s bonfire, he decided.
At night a giant bonfire, with bands playing music all around, long tables set up for a feast, jesters and dancers all around the fire in a massive clearing.
Perhaps an event in the morning, with the children collecting the wood and being paid in treats for collecting it?
And, special wood pieces would be stashed around the city, and if you brought one in it would get you double the candle you’d get for a normal piece of wood.
But what else?
Hmmm…
Maybe a petting zoo of sorts? Or where the farmers could show off their healthiest animals?
That sounded good, with a petting zoo for the kids (and adults), and an area for the city folk to show off their pets as well.
And finally, the grand finale, day seven.
A feast would be held all day and night, the winners of the week long costume contest being announced.
A play would be held as well during lunch, and after that the stage it had been held on would be cleared for dancing while bands took turns playing as well.
Then a place for apple-bobbing to be held, with a winner of course, but in teams.
A team of ten for each, and whoever could get the most apples in five minutes won.
And then a tricker-treater street held, those who dressed up would go down and knock for a treat, or get a trick instead.
Eule got off the train, walked the eleven blocks to his meager apartment, and crawled into bed.
And while he slept, he dreamed of festivals and warm food that everyone could enjoy.
